NC students and
communIty members
alIke woke up early on
a Saturday mornIng and
laced up theIr tennIs
shoes to support UNC 0ance |arathon
by partIcIpatIng In the second annual
5K FTK and Fun Fun on Nov. 2.
ThIs year, 500 people regIstered
to run In eIther the 1mIle Fun Fun
or In the 5K. The numbers were
up from last year when 400 people
regIstered. Kelsey 0avIs, DperatIons
CommIttee ChaIr, saId she was happy
wIth the turnout of the event.
"We had both an Increase In
regIstratIons and runners who
nIshed the race," she saId.
0avIs saId It seemed that there
was a larger turnout from the
communIty thIs year, addIng that
students made up the majorIty of
the partIcIpants last year.
"ThIs year one of our goals was
to get communIty members more
Involved, and thInk we were able to
accomplIsh that goal," 0avIs saId.
0avIs, whose commIttee planned
the event, saId she loves the Idea of
a 5K because It Is dIfferent from any
other event that UNC0| puts on,
whIch she thInks Is excItIng.
ThIs year the Fun
Fun was themed
"Follow the Yellow
8rIck Foad" and
featured specIal
vIsIts from
Scarecrow, TIn
|an, the Cowardly
LIon and 0orothy, herself! Fun
runners were encouraged along the
route by the WIzard of Dz characters
and greeted at the end by Famses,
who was cheerIng on all the runners.
KId cocaptaIns Jake EllIs, True
Wells and Teddy Zug and theIr famIlIes
attended to make the day extra
specIal. 10yearold Scott CIllIam, a
frIend of UNC0|, sang the natIonal
anthem to kIck off the race.
NatalIe Thomas, a senIor at
UNC, saId she partIcIpated In the 5K
because she wanted to support one
of her frIends who Is very Involved
wIth UNC0|.
"t seems lIke a great communIty
event," she saId.
StephanIe 8ohlIng, a pallIatIve
care nurse at N.C. ChIldren's
HospItal, spoke before the race
to offer some InspIratIon to the
partIcIpants.
"Please remember that what
you're doIng does a lot for the lIttle
people In North CarolIna," she saId.
The pallIatIve care program Is
funded by one of UNC0|'s 1J grants

She decIded to get Involved
wIth UNC0| after seeIng how
enthusIastIc all the commIttee

"What sets UNC0| apart from
other organIzatIons Is that you

ThIs year, 0umas hopes to raIse

Her overall goal for UNC0| Is to
get more people both on campus

are then able to focus better on

"ThIs grant really focuses on
makIng sure the one person who Is
gIvIng up everythIng to be there for
theIr chIldren Is also havIng a way of

The sleepIng pads, exercIse

about becomIng a dancer.
For those who have never danced
before, sIgnIng up mIght seem lIke a
dauntIng challenge. However, many
of those who have danced before,
especIally other senIors lIke 8etubIza
who have danced each year durIng theIr
tIme at UNC, say that the experIence Is
denItely not one to be mIssed.
SenIor AllI Engel has been a dancer
for the past three years and plans to
be a fouryear dancer. She saId that It
Is easy to understand why people care
so much about the cause and keep
comIng back to dance year after year.
"t's the most fun, seless act that
've ever been a part of, and 'm
proud to say that 've been able to be
a dancer for the past three years,"
saId Engel. "No amount of lost sleep Is
more precIous than the memorIes that
've made at 0ance |arathon."
8etubIza agrees wIth Engel, sayIng
that partIcIpatIng In the marathon
has been one of the most rewardIng
challenges of her lIfe.
" keep comIng back to UNC
0| year after year because am
consIstently amazed at the sense
of solIdarIty that UNC0| creates
between dancers and the patIents
and famIlIes of the N.C. ChIldren's
HospItal," saId 8etubIza.
t Is also Important for potentIal
dancers to know that dancIng Is not
requIred durIng the entIre marathon.
SInce there are two gyms at the event,
one for performances and dancIng and
the other for dIfferent actIvItIes, there
are always lots of optIons for how
to have fun at the marathon. From
basketball games and board games, to
cake walks and crafts, there truly Is
somethIng for everyone.
n addItIon, some other marathon
hIghlIghts Include watchIng
performances by many of UNC's best
campus groups, seeIng the sun rIse
above Kenan StadIum and meetIng each
team's kId cocaptaIn who has dIrectly
benetted from UNC0|'s servIces.
"For future dancers, would say
denItely gIve dancIng a shot,"
saId Engel. "People who don't try

experIence It Is."
