COURSEDESCRIPTION: Painting I is an intermediate study course. You commitment and full attention to meeting the basic requirements of this class is imperative to your success. Painting I is a studio course and much practice, discussion and learning goes on during the scheduled class time. The purpose of this class is to develop basic painting skills. By the end of this course students will have learned to: 1. Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the roles color, value and spatial organization play in constructing a painting from direct observation. 2. Create paintings that demonstrate a strong working knowledge of basic design principles. 3. Be proficient with oil painting materials and safe studio practices for using them. 4. Have developed an improved technical craft and technique. 5. Be able to problem solve and think critically about their paintings and the work of others 6. Be prepared for the intense work environment of upper division painting courses. REQUIREMENTS/ ATTENDANCEPOLICY This is a studio course and much practice, discussion and learning goes on during the scheduled class time. Therefore, excellent attendance is REQUIRED. Youare allowedonly 3 unexcusedabsencesduringthe semester.Your4th absencewill result in one letter dropand your 5th absencewill fail youfromthe classNOEXCEPTIONS.Excused absences will require a doctors note and/or individual discussion with the instructor. Keep in mind that speaking with your instructor about your absence does not necessarily make it excused! Timely completion of assignments, including the midterm and final portfolios, is expected, as is thoughtful participation in class critiques. If absent, you are responsible for the material covered during class and will be required to make up work on your assignments. Extra time outside of class will be required to complete weekly homework assignments and inclass assignments.

PREPAREDNESS,TARDIES,CRITIQUES,& HOMEWORK Class begins and attendance will be taken at 8:00 am. Preparedness also means having the appropriate materials ready for class work time. For each 2 late arrivals to class 1 unexcused absence will be assessed and its consequent deductions will be reflected on your final grade. (i.e. 2 lates = 1 unexcused absence). Homework MUST be completed on time. Any late work will be docked 1 letter grade and will be due by the next class period; ANYTHINGAFTERTHISWILLNOTBE ACCEPTEDANDWILLRESULTIN AN F. *ALL ASSIGNMENTS CAN BE REWORKED AT ANY POINT THROUGHOUT THE

SEMESTER FOR AN IMPROVEMENT OF YOUR GRADE EXCEPT THOSE PROJECTS THAT WERE TURNED IN LATE.

Paintingwith oil paintsandpreparingthe properpaintingsurfacescanbe a slowprocess. Designateextra timeoutsideof class, as it will be mandatoryto completeyour assignmentssuccessfully . Canvases and boards must be gessoed and dry prior to class. Paintings are due at the scheduled critique time during which your active participation is expected and will be evaluated. Critiques are extremely important and you should treat them as you would tests in any other non-studio class. An unexcused absence at a critique will result in an automatic 1 full-letter grade deduction on your assignment. You are responsible for contacting me in the case of an emergency absence.

GRADING: All assignments and homework must be completed on time. Late assignments will be docked 1 letter grade and will be due by the next class period. Each of these will be worth a certain number of points based on the difficulty and time spent on the project. All projects hold the same value and will be averaged together for your final grade. CLASSROOMRESPONSIBILITIES As part of this class you are responsible for helping to maintain our shared working space. ,aily responsibilities will include4 1) Putting used oil & paint soaked rags in proper disposal containers. 2) Removing all trash from your workspace (i.e. soda cans, food wrappers, etc.) 3) Keeping your locker & storage bin clean and accessible 4) Sharing in responsibility of keeping the sink clean and unclogged. NOTE: The entire class is responsible for keeping the drains free of paper towels and other debris and using the squeegee to move all of the water to the drain. 5) Reorganizing easels & chairs at the end of each class

CRITIQUES Critiques will be conducted upon the completion of most projects. Anyunexcused absencesat critiqueswill result in an automatic1-letter gradereductionon yourassignment (example:A becomesa B).

Dropping a class after 14 days may also impact eligibility; if you withdraw from this class and it results in an enrollment status of less than full time, you may lose eligibility for your lottery scholarship. Lottery recipients are eligible to receive the scholarship for a maximum of five years from the date of initial enrollment, or until a bachelor degree is earned. CLASSROOMEXPECTATIONS In order to create and maintain a positive and productive environment in the classroom, it is essential that each person treat other class members and the instructor in a respectful manner. Therefore, disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to the following: intentionally antagonizing the instructor, receiving beeper or phone messages during class, leaving class early or coming to class late, talking while another individual is talking, sleeping in class, doing assignments for other classes during this class, and engaging in other activities that detract from the classroom learning experience. Students who disrupt the class will be asked to leave for the remainder of the class period and will be required to meet with the instructor prior to returning to class. Continued disruption will result in the recommendation to the Office of Judicial Affairs and Mediation Services that you be expelled from the class.

NOTE: Please make sure all pagers and cellular telephones are turned off prior to class. If your cell phone rings you will be asked to turn it off. If you do not turn your phone off or refuse you, you will be asked to leave for the remainder of class and will need to discuss the issue with the instructor during office hours before returning to class. Talking while the instructor is talking is also strictly enforced and extremely rude. IMPORTANT INFORMATION IS BEING PRESENTED AND THIS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!
ACADEMICMISCONDUCT It is expected that all work you complete for this course is your own. You are expected to include appropriate citations (when applicable) in all of your work for this course. The University policy for academic misconduct will be followed. Academic misconduct includes the following behaviors: Plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, or facilitating any such act. For purposes of this section, the following definitions apply: (1) Plagiarism. The deliberate adoption or reproduction of ideas or words or statements of another person as ones own without proper acknowledgment. (2) Cheating. Intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise. The term academic exercise includes all forms of work submitted for credit or hours. (3) Fabrication . Intentional or unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or citation in and academic exercise. (4) Facilitation . Intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another to violate a provision of the institutional code of academic misconduct. Any student suspected of violating the academic misconduct policy will be required to meet with me to discuss the situation. Your name will also be forwarded to the Office of Judicial Affairs and Mediation Services for possible disciplinary action. If you are found responsible for committing an act of academic misconduct, you will receive a grade of F for the course. Artist Investigation/Research Note: Each week students will also be required to complete a discussion forum on D2L. I will provide an artists work every week with a brief description of the artist and their work. You will be required to intelligently respond to the work using the terms we have discussed in class. A minimum four sentence, response will be required for full credit. All 14 will count for 1 full studio assignment. ARTISTPROFILEINVESTIGATIONS Read your assigned artist profile from D2L and provide a written response to the artists work. Quality responses must include justification for your opinion! Did you like/dislike the artists work? WHY/WHY NOT? How do you respond to the content of the work and the artists ideas? Did the artist successfully convey their ideas? How? How do formal elements play into their work? (composition, color, shape, etc) What would you do differently if this was your work?
