SPRINKLE IRRIGATION - AGRONOMIC DESIGN

for pre-feasibility design

The spreadsheet template* is based in SCS Section 15 Chapter 11
Sprinkle Irrigation" by professor Jack Keller.
http://www.wsi.nrcs.usda.gov/products/W2Q/water_mgt/Irrigation/irrig-handbooks.html

The data must be entered only in the "green" cells. The present page
provides general information which might be useful when no specific data
is available.
The order in which the data is introduced is irrelevant. Trial and error
approach can be used to test different alternatives.
The tables on this page are the following:
1.- Effective rooting depths
2.- Available water holding capacity WHC by texture
3.- Minimum and maximum values of ECe (mmhos/cm) for various crops
4.- Soil infiltration rates
5.- Sprinkler nozzle discharge coefficients
6.- Recommended nozzle sizes and pressure-heads
7.- Recommended Sprinkler Spacing
8.- Wind effects
9.- Evapotranspiration - IWMI Web Site

6.4 mm/hr
0.25 inch per hour

12.7 mm/hr

Waterdrops are
large due to low
pressure

Waterdrops are
fairly well broken

Fair

Fair to good at upper limits of

pressure range

Waterdrops are
well broken over
entire wetted diameter
Very good

Waterdrops are
well broken over
entire wetted diameter
Good except where
wind velocities
exceed 4 miles
per hour

Adaptations and
limitations

Small acreages.
Primarily for unConfined to soils
der-trees sprinkwith intake rates
ling in orchards.
exceeding 12.7 mm/hrCan be used for
(0.5 inch per hour) andfield crops and veto good ground
getables
cover on medium
to coarse-textured
soils

For all field crops

and most irrigable
soils. Well adapted to over-tree
sprinkling in orchards and groves
and to tobacco
shades

Same as for intermediate presure

sprinklers except
where wind is
excessive

General characteristics

cation of sprinklers and their adaptability

Hydraulic
or giant
56 to 84 m

Under-tree
long-angle
7 to 35 m

Perforated pipe

80-120 psi
One large nozzle
with smaller
supplemental
nozzles to fill in
pattern gaps.
Small nozzle rotates the sprinkler.
16.5 mm/hr
0.65 inch per hour

10-50 psi
Design to keep
stream trajectories
below fruit and
foliage by lowering
the nozzle angle.

4-20 psi
Portable irrigation pipe
with lines of small
perforations in upper
third of pipe perimeter

8.4 mm/hr
0.33 inch per hour

12.7 mm/hr
0.50 inch per hour

Waterdrops are
extremely well
broken

Waterdrops are
fairly well broken

Waterdrops are large

due to low pressure

Acceptable in calm
air. Severely distorted by wind

Fairly good. Diamond pattern

recommended
where laterals are
spaced more than
one tree interspace
For all orchards or
citrus groves. In
orchards where
wind will distort
over-tree springkler
patterns. In orchards where available pressure is not
sufficient for operation of over-tree
sprinklers

Good rectangular
pattern

Adaptable to closegrowing crops that

provide a good
ground cover. For
rapid coverage and
for odd-shaped
areas. Limited to
soils with high intake rates.

2.8 to 14 m

For low-growing crops

only. Unsuitable for
tall crops. Limited to
soils with relatively
high intake rates. Best
adapted to small acreages of high value crops.
Low operating pressure
permits use of gravity
or municipal supply.
