Research Question: Martha Dodd-Why was She Controversial?

I Introduction: A. Hook: Martha Dodd led a dangerous life as a spy, full of intrigue and mysterious schemes. B. Define Terms: Terms that will be defined are: Martha Dodd, Controversial. C. Question the Question: A- Problems with writing this essay were finding and piecing together information. Most of the time it was hard to distinguish factual and correct information. D. Scope and Sequence: Scope- Martha Dodds background of political interests, literary background, connections and relationships to do with the Soviet intelligence. Sequence- 1920-1957. Martha Dodds interest in German politics, literary achievements and espionage for Soviet intelligence.

Thesis: Martha Dodd was controversial for her political thinking and engagement with Soviet intelligence. II Background (Summary): A- Martha Dodds Political interests as a young adult. B- Marthas literary background. C- Martha Dodds admiration of Germany in 1933. III Evaluation of Sources: A- Book: THE COLD WAR by Jussi Hanhimki, and Odd Arne Westad, New York: Oxford University Press 2003 OPVL: Origins: Hanhimki, Jussi and Westad, Arne, Odd. Published in New York by Oxford University Press. Purpose: To give a detailed history of the Cold War through documents and eye witness accounts, for people interested in knowing more about the Cold War. Value: Through very precise accounts, the book gives detailed and factual information on the Second World War. Limitations: Even though this book gives eyewitness accounts, a limitation it has is that at times an example given isnt explained in a simple or understandable way. There can be too much information, at once.

B- JSTOR: THE VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY by Fred Arthur Bailey, Virginia Historical Society 1992.

OPVL: Origins: Bailey Arthur, Bailey. Published by Virginia Historical Society in 1992. Purpose: To give an outlook of famous Virginians who have made history. Value: Gives a view and tells the history of famous Virginians in a very admirable and detailed article. Limitations: The article is written in a biased tone and the writing seems to be very personal, at times with only one sided views. IV Analysis Part one: Interests and relationships to do with German politics and espionage A- Relationships and beginning of interests in German Politics in 1933 B- Relationship with Boris Vinogradov during visit to Russia, and his influences over her. C- Start of being a Soviet Spy (1934/1935) D- Spying for the Soviet intelligence

V Analysis Part two: Espionage days, Working for the Soviet intelligence and Literary achievements. ABCDEspionage during WWII. Journalism work, and writing of experiences in Russia and Germany. Marthas role in politics, under the influence of Soviet Intelligence. Conviction of Espionage (with Alfred Stern), immigration to Moscow

VI Conclusion: A- This essay shows how Martha Dodd was a Controversialist through the way she wrote her books on Politics and her espionage, under the influence of the Soviet Intelligence.
