Risk Management Plan Step 1- The Community Fire Protection System

The community of Small Farm, SC consists of four divisions: Suppression, Fire Prevention, Administration and Training. The community fire department fire fighters employs 130 sworn and 8 unsworn employees, working 24-hour shifts with 48 hours off between each shift. The Small Farm Fire Department provides fire protection to residences and businesses with the city of Small Farm, Large Farm, and Medium Farm. Under these agreements, the department responds to the needs of those residents or roadway incidents. The department automatically responds to commercial structures in adjoining jurisdictions. Step 2-The Community at Risk The demographics of my community consist of a mixture of single family homes, mobile homes, and townhouses. The area is located in Small Farm, SC has an estimated population of 2,579 with 100% of the population being urban. The population has seen a consistent increase and decrease over the last 13 years. The median age is 32 years of age with the State of South Carolina median age being 38 years. The vital records of Small Farm has 80% of the population with a high school diploma , 8.5% with a bachelors degree or higher, 2.4% graduate or professional and 8.4% unemployed. Unemployment is higher in Small Farm compared to the state as a whole. In the community there are homes and industrial offices which could be a fire hazard. The number of fires happening in the area is less compared to other areas. Past fires have occurred due to aging of homes and businesses.

Step 4-The Unprotected Risk Unprotected risk begins with the three Es; education, engineering, and enforcement are important. The codes available for new construction of residential and commercial has reduced the amount of unprotected risk while protection. By educating students in the local school system allows the fire department to opportunity to develop a relationship as well as getting the information into the homes on what to do in case of an incident. Step 5-Strategies to Consider The different locations of the fire station are strategically place to ensure an effective and efficient time in the fire department response.
