BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE INSTRUCTION DIVISION FIRST SEMESTER 2013-2014 Course Handout (Part II) In addition

to Part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the time table) this portion gives further specific details regarding the course. Course No.: PHY F312 Course Title: STATISTICAL MECHANICS Instructor-in-charge: TOBY JOSEPH Scope and objective of the course: The course will start with a review of thermodynamics. We will then introduce kinetic theory and work out some of its applications. A detailed study of statistical mechanics will follow. We will end with a discussion on statistical mechanics applied to quantum systems. The principal aims of the course are (a) Develop the methods of statistical mechanics (b) Connect the laws of thermodynamics to statistical laws operating at the microscopic level, (c) Calculate thermodynamic quantities from the microscopic parameters, (d) Apply statistical mechanics to understanding the properties of matter Text Book: (T) Statistical Mechanics (3rd edition), R.
