FPT FIAT POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGIES PRESENTS ITS ENGINE RANGE FOR CONSTRUCTION APPLICATIONS AT INTERMAT 2009 FPT Fiat

at Powertrain Technologies, is the Fiat Group Company dedicated to the research, development, manufacturing and sale of powertrain units for automotive, industrial and marine applications. FPT is pleased to present its products at its booth (Hall 5B L 010) at the Intermat Exhibition in Paris. During the exhibition, FPT will display the range of Tier III engines for industrial applications dedicated to the construction business featuring the key technological upgrades designed to meet Tier IV Interim requirements. FPT has four product families (F, N, C, V) with power ranges from 40 to 753 KW. Thanks to the adoption of internal EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), FPT engines for industrial applications will meet Phase III emission limits (EU IIIA USA EPA Tier III). However, some F engine models with a higher power range are based on an external cooled EGR system. Respect for environment has always been a priority for FPT. Relying on long-standing experience gathered in a wide variety of applications, FPT boasts the most advanced technologies both in terms of emissions and performance. Its industrial engine range features an innovative architecture, multi-valve systems, fixed or variable geometry turbochargers, last generation mechanical injection systems, high pressure common rail systems or electronic control fuel injectors, as well as internal recirculation of oil vapor to prevent air emissions. The result consists in a state-of-the-art engine range characterized by top technology, low-cost, high performance, low fuel consumption and low environmental air and acoustic emissions impact. The current range of Tier III engines will evolve toward Tier IV Interim through the introduction of new technologies to reduce emissions. Solutions will vary according to engine family and power range.

More specifically, in the F family FPT proposes E-EGR (External Exhaust Gas Recirculation) coupled with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). This solution meets the emissions targets at a low cost and with a limited impact on vehicle space requirements. For C, N and V engine families, FPT adopts the SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction). This advanced technology treats exhaust gas with a catalytic fluid to optimize heavy duty professional use applications, i.e. mediumlarge machines where space constraints are not as severe. SCR leads to a significant reduction of operating costs compared both to Tier III engines and other technologies, as well as lower maintenance costs and excellent engine performance and fuel consumption. Expertise developed in critical fuel and air engine systems enables FPT to apply technologies such as common rail upgrades, high pressure direct injection systems and the double turbo two-stage system to its own engine systems. Their application to the current range of industrial engines with a view to Tier IV Interim enables FPT to achieve excellence in platform size and weight reductions and an increase in fuel economy with power boosts up to + 15%, without increasing displacement, versus competitive engines of higher displacement. FPT will display some Tier III engines for industrial applications and for construction machinery manufactured by the CNH Group at the Case Construction Equipment (Hall 5A J 100/101) and New Holland Construction (Hall 5A C 070/071) booths. More specifically N45 and C87 engines will be displayed at the New Holland booth, while F32 and N45 will be shown by Case.

FPT FIAT POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGIES DISPLAYS ITS ENGINE RANGE FROM 65 TO 375 KW AT INTERMAT The new F family of engines, the backbone of the FPT industrial range, consists of 4-cylinder in line engines, 2 valves per cylinder, controlled by a front gear train and fed by a mechanical injection system. Engines produce power output from 40kW to 65kW on structural and non structural versions. F32 is the engine that represents the F series at the FPT booth and is displayed in its supercharged mechanical version with aftercooler. With a completely new design and implementation, F32 was awarded the Diesel of the year prize in 2008. Its total displacement of 3.2 liters produces power up to 65 kW (88hp) in the range of 22002500 rpm and torque up to 340 Nm at 1400 rpm. In each application, compliance with emission limits is ensured by an internal or external cooled EGR, with or without intercooler, to achieve a better tradeoff between performance and space constraints. The non structural version of F32 is in high demand for industrial applications, especially for earth-moving machinery. F32

The N family, of the FPT intermediate engine range, features a power range from 60 to 175 kW and displacement from 4.5 to 6.7 liters. At INTERMAT 2009 this engine family is represented by the N45 and N67 engines. Both are equipped with a common rail electronic injection system that offers benefits at high operating pressures and ensures excellent fuel spraying with top performance and minimum emissions. The electronic injection system operates independently of engine speed and results in significant reduction of acoustic and gas emissions, as well as optimized fuel metering and phasing, in any operating condition. The innovative N67 engine features the SCR system , 6.7 liter displacement with 6 inline cylinders, 4 valves per cylinder and a maximum power of 175 kW (239HP) at 2200 rpm. Due to use of the common rail electronic fuel injection system and SCR, this engine meets Tier IV Interim emission requirements, and is an excellent example of the trade-off between performance and application cost. The FPT C family covers a wide power range (from 200 to 375 kW) with displacements from 8.7 to 13 liters, and is represented by a 13-liter 6 cylinder inline engine, having 4 valves per cylinder. At the top of the range, it is one of the largest and most powerful FPT engines for industrial applications as well as a clear expression of the highly developed expertise and engineering skills reached by this sector of the Fiat Group. This engine features high reliability, durability and flexibility, combined with high performance, low operating costs and low gas and acoustic emissions. The extensive use of modern electronic control technologies in the most powerful C family engines allows a higher level of trade-offs between performance and efficiency, that are reflected by the maximum torque and power levels achieved.
