Acceptable Use Policy The use of computers, electronic information, and computer networks is essential for research, instruction,

and administration within the Xavier High School community. Because the electronic environment is easily disrupted and electronic information is readily reproduced, respect for the work and rights of others is especially important. With access to computers and people all over the world comes the availability of materials that may not be considererd appropriate in the context of the schol setting. There may be some materials or individual communications that are not suitable for high school students. Xavier High School views electronic information in the same manner as reference materials. Specifically, the school supports resources that will enhance the learning environment with directed guidance from the faculty and staff. Exploration of and interaction with resources are encouraged. However, it is impossible to control all the materials on a global network and an industrious user may discover inappropriate information. Xavier High School cannot prevent the possibility that some users may access material that is not consistent with the educational mission, goals, and policies of the school. Guidelines 1) Acceptable Use Use of technology must be for the purpose of education or research consistent with school policy. Use for entertainment purposes, including music and games, is only acceptable with explicit permission from a network administrator. All computer games are prohibited unless used as part of a classroom project and under the supervision of a classroom teacher. Unauthorized use or distribution of copyrighted material is prohibited. Use of threatening or obscene material is prohibited. Use for commercial activities, product advertisement, or political lobbying is only acceptable with explicit permission from a network administrator.

Students may not use Xavier computers to access or set-up email accounts. This would include, but is not limited to, Hotmail and AOL messenger. Unauthorized use of programs for which students do not have rights is prohibited. Only programs installed by the network administrator can be used on Xavier computers. Students are prohibited from making any changes to computer settings. Unauthorized use of another students disk is prohibited. 2) Security If you identify a security problem, notify a network administrator immediately. Do not show or identify a network problem to other students. Do not reveal your account password or allow another person to use your account. Do not use anothers individual account. User must notify the network administrator of any change in account information. User may be occasionally required to update registration, password, and account information in order to continue Internet/computer access. Xavier High School reserves the right to access any file whether it is saved on the network, hard drive, floppy disk, CD, or jump/travel/flash drive. 3) Vandalism / Harassment Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy hardware, software, data of another user, the Internet or any other network. This includes, but is not limited to, creating and/or uploading computer viruses.

Harassment is defined as the annoyance of another user or the interference in another users work. This includes, but is not limited to, sending unwanted email. Wasting technology resources, including bandwidth, file space, and printers, is also prohibited. 4) Internet Privileges Internet access is coordinated through the complex association of countless commercial, research, governmental, and educational organizations as well as individuals. The operation of the Internet relies heavily on the proper conduct of the users, who must adhere to strict guidelines. Internet access is a privilege not a right. If a user violates any of the provisions in this document, his / her account will be terminated. Some of the violations may also constitute a criminal offense and may result in legal action. 5) Internet Etiquette Be polite Do not use vulgar or obscene language Do not reveal personal information, especially your address, telephone number, or credit card number without explicit permission from a system administrator. Electronic mail is not guaranteed to be private Do not intentionally disrupt the network or other users Abide by generally accepted rules of network etiquette CONSEQUENCES 1) Violations of the Acceptable Use Policy will result in the student being prohibited from using the school computers for a time duration as determined by administration. Additional punishment may be given based on the severity of the infraction.

2) For each violation, the student / parent will be responsible for the cost of recovering and/or reconstructing damaged software and/or repairing or replacing damaged hardware systems. 3) A serious violation may include police involvement or expulsion. 4) If a transfer or incoming student is identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with other computer systems, access may be denied for a probationary period.
