CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the writer discusses some important points related to the area of research. Those are background of the study, problems of the study, objectives of the study, and definition of key terms.

I.1

Background of the Study Language and society are two things which cannot be separated. Society is a group of people who have similar feeling, thought, and rules to realize their purposes. While language is one of the components of society speak. Without language, people cannot speak or communicate each other. That is why language and society cannot be separated. Sociolinguistics is a part of linguistics that study about the relationship between language and society. As we know, in a society speaks, there are many variants of language, one of them is register. Wardhaugh (2006, p.52) defines Register as sets of language items associated with discrete occupational or social groups. It means that Register is a variant of language that is used in a community only, and cannot be understood by other communities. Recently, some of mass media focus the news on alleged bribery beef import case. The import of tens of thousands of cows is intended to lower the average price of beef
which monitors prices of basic commodities Directorate General of Domestic Trade still reach Rp. 89,900 per kilogram. But, a scandal happens along the process of the import. Lutfi Hasan is estimated as one of the actors of the scandal. To proof the estimation, Judge turned on the conversation transcription between Lutfi Hasan and the women who called Bunda Putri. In the conversation, they used register to talk each other, so that the others cannot really understand what they mean.

The reason why the writer chooses the register used by Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri is because conversation about alleged bribery beef import case is a political hot news, and people especially youth has to pay more attention to the problems and try to solve.

Problems of the Study Based on the background of the study, the problems to be solved in this research are: 1. What registers are used by Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri in a conversation about alleged bribery beef import case? 2. What are the meanings of registers used by Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri in a conversation about alleged bribery beef import case?

Objectives of the Study Related to the previous problems above, the objectives of the study are: 1. To find out the register used by Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri in a conversation about alleged bribery beef import case. 2. To find out the meaning of register used by Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri in a conversation about alleged bribery beef import case.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this chapter, the writer presents the discussion about the theories and previous studies underlying this research. The main theory of this research is Sociolinguistics which is focused on Register used by Bunda Putri and Lutfi Hasan in a conversation about alleged bribery beef imports case. 2.1 Sociolinguistics Sociolinguistics is a part of linguistics that study about the relationship between language and society. Sociolinguistics is the study of language use within or among groups of speakers (Wardhaugh, 2006, p. 119). Based on the statement, language and society cannot be separated from one another because both of them are significant to create a good communication. 2.2 Language Variation In daily life, there are so many varieties of language which are used by people. Wardhaugh (cited in Iragiliati, 2007, p.4.16) says: The meaning of language variation is that in reality the language we use in everyday living is remarkably is varied. Variety is a specific set of linguistics items or human speech pattern (presumably sounds, words, grammatical fetures,etc) which we can uniquely associate with some external factors (presumably, a geographical area or socio groups). Some varieties of language are dialect, slang, and register. 2.2.1 Dialect Dialect is a variety of languages in which in the grammars differs in systematic ways from other varieties. Differences may be lexical, prestige dialect (Fromkin et al., 2003, p.580).

The example of dialect is nyilih and nyilah. The two words are Javanese which means borrow. 2.2.2 Slang According to Sari (1998, p.45), it is states that Slang is informal style of language use. It has traditional carried a negative connotation: it is often perceived as low form of language and is deemed to be out of place in formal styles of language. 2.2.3 Register Register is a variety that is not typically identified with any particular speech community but is tied to the communicative occasion (Bolinger, 1981, p.213). There are many kinds of registers, they are used in art, music, politic, etc. 2.3 Previous Study There was a study reviewed related to the register. In 2012, Risna had conducted the study about the register used by Oryza FM Radio Community at the University of Brawijaya. She used the meaning of register to analyze the data of register that used by Oryza FM Radio Community. In the study, she focused on the denotative meaning to find out the lexical meaning of register used by Oryza FM radio and also find out the lexical meaning of register itself.

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD

This chapter discusses many points related to the research method. They are research design, data sources, data collection, and data analysis. 3.1 Research Design Berg (1989, p.2) says qualitative research refers to the meaning, concept, definitions, characteristics, metaphors, symbols, and descriptions of things. Based on the statement, the writer concludes that this research aims at getting the description about registers used by Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri in a conversation about alleged bribery beef import case. It will conduct not only to understand but also to describe the reality of the registers. 3.2 Data Sources The writer will listen to the to the conversation transcription between Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri to analyze the registers used by Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri in a conversation about alleged bribery beef import case. 3.3 Data Collection In collecting data, the writer will do several steps as follows: 1. Recording the conversation. 2. Transcribing the recorded data obtained from the interview and the recording. 3. The writer will select and listen to registers used in the conversation. 3.4 Data Analysis 1. The writer will give denotation as lexical meaning and the meaning of registers used by Lutfi Hasan and Bunda Putri. 2. The writer will draw conclusion based on the result of data analysis.
