Arguments Page 81, bottom left- Local color was not really taken as a serious literature because any

any point they were trying to make was kind of lost in the superficial observations/flattery of the subjects. Page 83, top left- Characters in Local color fiction are strongly affected or based on their environment, in a way that there behavior almost represents the environment. Page 85, top left- Local color was also used in attempt to benefit the community by making them appear in a positive light, or by drawing sympathy from the reader somehow. Page 86, middle left- Local Color talked of the differences between groups, this can easily lead to clich because it is easy to habitually pick similar people to compare every time.

Vocabulary Pejoratively- having a disparaging, derogatory, or belittling effect or force -It needs to be defined nonpejoratively as a genre adapted to special purposes. Cognizance- awareness, realization, or knowledge; notice; perception -A definition which tales cognizance of both kinds of local color would seem to be: Local-color writing is writing that insists upon the special context of the events and characters with which it deals, that insists upon the primary importance of that special context to its meaning Determinism - a theory or doctrine that acts of the will, occurrences in nature, or
social or psychological phenomena are causally determined by preceding events or natural laws

- An obvious implication of the definition I have proposed is that local-color fiction, considered as a genre, tends to be deterministic Clichs- something that has become overly familiar or commonplace Through the stories of Thomas Nelson Page wander those cliches of fiction Eccentricity- an oddity or peculiarity, as of conduct - Its subject is representative of a region, class, or race and is amply provided with eccentricities, rough edges that have not had a chance to be worn smooth by a uniform society Opinion There are a lot of well thought through, very logical, but perhaps overly hostile points made here. Throughout he comes off very critically against this local color form of writing; in fact I believe it was one of the major goals of the writing to sway us against Local Color writing. What he is reasoning does make sense, but I dont agree with a lot of the thing he said. Like at the beginning he mentioned how local color was merely an aesthetic, I dont believe that, because while it may a different somewhat outdated literary technique, it would still be a piece of literature, and in hence a piece of art. I can believe though that people would using Local color writing to improve their situation.
