Renaming a SharePoint server can be a tedious task. Here I describe a few of the steps you will
probably need to do.
1. Rename machine in Windows
Open System properties at Start > Control Panel > System
Go to the Computer Name tab
Click on the Change button
Type the new machine name
Restart computer
2. Rename the server for SharePoint
Go to %COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft shared\Web server extensions\12\Bin
Use the following command to rename a server:
stsadm -o renameserver -oldservername <current name of the server> -newservername
<new name for the server>
Dont forget to rename all servers (front-ends, database, etc.)
Perform an IIS reset:
iisreset /noforce
3. Update the hosts file
Open the hosts file at %WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Update any references to the old server name
If you use a DNS server you will also need to update it
4. Update the web sites URLs in IIS
Open IIS Manager at Start > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS)
Manager
Expand the server and select Web Sites
Open the properties of a site and go to the Web Site tab
Click on Advanced and update all entries that refer to the old server name
Repeat for all sites
5. Update Application Pool accounts

Open IIS Manager at Start > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services {IIS)
Manager
Expand the server and select Application Pools
Open the properties of an application pool and go to the Identity tab
Make sure the account is still valid
Repeat for all application pools
6. Change the Alternate Access Mappings
Start by changing the mappings for Central Administration:
Go to %COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft shared\Web server extensions\12\Bin
Add a new URL using the following command:
stsadm -o addalternatedomain -url <valid URL> -incomingurl <http://incoming url> -
urlzone {Default | Internet | Extranet | Custom} -resourcename <non-Web application
resource name>
Remove the old URL by typing:
stsadm -o deletealternatedomain -url <valid URL> -incomingurl <http://incoming url>
After Central Administration is working, the other mappings can be changed directly through the
Central Administration:
Open Central Administration
Go to the Operations page
Click Alternate Access Mappings under Global Configuration
Update all mappings referring to the old server
7. Update Search Content Sources
For each Shared Service Provider:
Go to the Search settings
Select Content sources and crawl schedules
Edit each content source:
Make sure the URLs reflect the new server name
S. Update content references
Hopefully, you shouldnt have any, but in case you do remember to update all references in your
content that point to the old server name. Obviously, this is application specific.
