The Capriottis Story We Cater!
Lois Margolet grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, in a neighborhood known as Little Italy. She always dreamed of having her own sandwich shop but she knew she needed something unique to stand out from the rest. In 1976, she discovered it. She quit her full-time job, borrowed money, and purchased a boarded-up building on Union Street in Wilmington. Lois moved in upstairs and she and her brother, Alan, opened a sandwich shop downstairs. It was named after their grandfather, Philip Capriotti, who loved to cook for them. Their original concept was to capture the hearts of real turkey lovers, an idea that separated Capriottis Sandwich Shop from everyone else. Lois and Alan would roast 10 to 12 whole fresh turkeys every night and make sandwiches to order every day. After a few years and a lot of turkeys, Capriottis Sandwich Shop became a household name and Lois and Alan made their cousin, Diane Rizzo, a partner. Together, they opened their second and third shops in New Castle and Newark, Delaware. Soon after, their signature sandwich, the Bobbie, as well as several other specialty sandwiches, became world famous.
