Field PG and Power PG

Product Brief January 2004

Common features

For over 20 years, "Unpack, plug-in and go" has been a well-proven concept for SIMATIC programming devices on the market for automation technology. The success of the SIMATIC PGs lies on the one hand that the devices with integrated interfaces and programming software are fully equipped for programming the SIMATIC components. On the other hand, the SIMATIC PGs with a Windows operating system and their high-performance PC hardware provide a platform for various applications beyond the boundaries of SIMATIC. Ongoing innovation of the programming devices in the direction of modern PC technology always safeguards continuity, i.e. older SIMATIC target systems will still be supported. The latest generation of SIMATIC programming devices comprises the Field PG in Notebook form and the Power PG as a programming workstation. Common features Industrial compatibility The two new SIMATIC programming devices are designed for harsh everyday industrial use. The shock resistant and torsionally rigid die-cast magnesium housing makes a significant contribution to this. Large-area shock absorbers provide combined corner and edge protection and prevent, at the same time, thanks to their damping characteristics the potentially damaging effects of vibrations and shocks on the electronic components. A fold-away, ergonomically shaped handle ensures easy and secure transport.

The sum total of all these constructional measures increases the availability of the device, resulting in a cost saving (reduction in the total cost of ownership). Integrated interfaces Interfaces required for programming the SIMATIC controllers over TTY, MPI, PROFIBUS or Industrial Ethernet have been integrated. The Ethernet interface can also be used to connect to corporate networks (LANs). The interfaces for the memory cards of SIMATIC S7 and S5 as well as for the new micro memory cards are also integrated. S5 EPROM modules can be programmed using an adapter for the memory card interface. Two PC card interfaces and two USB interfaces are available for connecting modern peripheral devices such as modems, scanners and cameras but also for a printer, keyboard or mouse or an external monitor. To protect against damage and fouling, all interfaces can be protected with slides or flaps. Ergonomics Comfortable and amenable to working over long periods without causing tiredness is assisted by: The ergonomic keyboard with rugged pushbutton mechanisms and laser inscription that cannot be rubbed off The touchpad insensitive to dirt with a high degree of positioning accuracy as well as Supports at the side for the ball of the thumb.

Archiving of large quantities of data With the configurator option "SIMATIC PC/PG Image & Partition Creator" and the combination drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) or the DVD burner (DVD-R/-RW), fast, easy and convenient data archiving even of the complete hard disk is possible. Erasable CDs or DVDs can also be used.

Battery-powered Field PG

The new mobile, industry-compatible SIMATIC Field PG in Notebook form is designed for use principally during commissioning, service and maintenance of automation systems. In addition, it can of course be used for setting parameters and programming. Thanks to its compact dimensions and low weight of less than 4 kg, it is ideally suited to use in confined spaces at the machine, in aircraft or on-board trains. Despite its compactness, the Field PG is ergonomic with its 14.1" TFT display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. For a supplementary price, a high-resolution display variant with 1400 x 1050 pixels (SXGA+) can also be ordered.

A high-performance Li ion battery supports operation for several hours without connection to the supply system which provides a high degree of mobility. The rechargeable battery and the main memory can be easily reached behind separate covers in the floor of the housing and can be easily replaced or upgraded. A so-called interface box is also available that operates as an interface multiplier and that can be connected to the Field PG equipped with a Pentium 4. It enables automation components to be connected over three interfaces: S5 online (TTY) Serial (V.24) Parallel (LPT) The interface box is necessary for programming SIMATIC S5 and nonSiemens systems but not for SIMATIC S7.

Mobile Intel Pentium 4 with 2.2 GHz 256 MB RAM, expandable to 1.5 GB

Unified Memory Architecture with 32 MB graphics memory 80 GB hard disk 2 x USB 2.0 Integrated COM interface

Power PG with swivel display and detachable keyboard

The SIMATIC Power PG is a flexible programming workstation with Pentium 4 technology as well as highspeed DDR-RAM modules. In addition to the PC card slots, in the Power PG, the PCI slots can also be used for two PCI modules for flexible expansion possibilities. The Power PG is used principally for parameter setting and programming as well as for simulation and testing. An integrated wide-rangeinput power supply supports worldwide use.

The power supply for the keyboard can be provided by a normal or rechargeable battery, but if necessary it can be maintained from the Power PG over a special cable. The Power PG impresses users, in particular, with its high-performance 15" display that can be rotated by 45 with a resolution of up to 1024 x 768 pixels which offers maximum 2D/3D graphics performance. For an additional price, a display variant with 1400 x 1050 pixels (SXGA+) can be supplied.

The full PC keyboard with numeric pad does not have a cable and can therefore be placed anywhere on the desk and positioned at an angle of up to 15 using fold-out feet. The Power PG can be upgraded quickly and easily in the future. After removing the rear panel, expansion modules can be inserted and the processor, RAM and hard disk can be easily replaced.
