TRAINING REPORT
INTRODUCTION This training was organized by OKOA Community based organization which has had HIV/AIDS and reproductive health programs in Saboti constituency of Transnzoia district. Home based care training aims at capacity building the community to own and contribute to the care of patients and clients as a continuation of care by health workers in the health facilities. I take this opportunity on behalf of the ministry of health/ NASCOP to appreciate OKOA CBO leadership and its members for this initiative to volunteer to support their community in improving its health .Appreciation goes also to NACC and CACC for availing the funds and support. Many thanks to the health workers in the health facilities and the community who have continued to support this CBO in their activities.

JUSTIFICATION
The ministry of public health and sanitation started the community strategy as a means of empowering the community to participate in its own health care. There has been a major knowledge and skills gap on HIV/AIDS interventions amongst the community health workers as compared to the other community own resource persons in the CBO. This training was therefore targeted at bridging this gap by training the community health workers in 2 community units i.e Muthangari and Matisi. A proposal was written to NACC and funding given to the OKOA CBO through the TOWA project.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
1. To develop the skills of community based health workers in home based care delivery and the transfer of nursing care skills to primary care givers and to people living with HIV/AIDS to enable them to take care of themselves. 2. To improve the quality of the life of PLWHAs in establishing a link between hospitals/health professionals and the untrained primary care givers at home.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY
The NASCOP National curriculum was used{ see the attached timetable and list of participants] which prescribes an 11 days training. The participants were a total of 30 and the main mode of training was lecture and roleplays especially in skills development. We also used Group discussions and feedback , demonstrations and return demonstrations . The training was done in the community for easy access to community visits. Learning assessment was on going throughout the training as well as a Pre-test and Post test to assess the progress of participants was given.

CHALLENGES 1. Some participants got other responsibilities along the way and this made trainers
to have to drag back the class to bring them to book,

2. Some afternoons the noise on the roof by the rain interfered with learning 3. Some of the participants who were PLWHA required counseling and psychological
support,

4. There are new issues of health that arise and are not in the timetable but needed
addressing

CONCLUSION /WAYFORWARD
This training was a major booster to OKOA CBO members , the CHWs , the CHEWs ,the health facility and by extension the Ministry of Public health and sanitation. Learning took place and the participants gave feedback that they felt empowered not only in the area of HIV/AIDS but also in other aspects of health and life . 1 .The CHWs will organize monthly meetings with the other CORPs at the health facilities to compile reports and foster linkages with the facilities. 2. The HCBC Supervisor will follow up home visits and hold support supervision meetings 3. Certification will be done at the end of the training Reported by Theresia Magomere HCBC Trainer
