Problem-Based / Inquiry Instruction Lesson Plan (10 pts) Lesson Background:

Your Name: Jeff Rost Grade Level: (circle one) K 1 2 3 4 5 6 Subject: (circle one) Language Arts Social Studies Mathematics Science Lesson Title: Healthy Children for the White House Materials Needed: Health textbook, primary document packets created by teacher ahead of time, paper, pencils, poster board, markers Prerequisite Skills: Students will know basic functions of the human body and the structure of the food pyramid/new food plate. Lesson Objectives: 1. Students will identify the health effects of junk food 2. Students will examine primary documents to determine a trend in childhood obesity 3. Students will create a proposal to combat childhood obesity to include plans on diet and exercise

Interaction with Students:

1. Orient students to the problem or dilemma? (Must first get their attention to SOLVE a problem!) I will start this lesson by asking what fifth grade students think childhood obesity means. After large group discussion, I will explain that childhood obesity is a dilemma that is plaguing our country, and its even a topic that the First Lady finds very important. I will share current statistics with students, and will explain how childhood obesity can impact individuals when they become adults. I will then frame the discussion that the students are now the nations top scientific investigators. I will explain that Mrs. Obama has contacted our classroom and has asked for our help in combatting childhood obesity. I will tell the students that she has sent over materials for us to research and use in coming up with a proposal for her to give to the President on ways to combat this problem. I will tell the students that they will be getting into groups that I have already selected and will be given research materials, statistics, charts, pictures, etc. to aid in their presentation. 2. Organize students for study: Students will be grouped based on readiness and/or ability. Students who may be struggling will be paired with students who have grasped the concept easily and those that are higher ability. I will provide classroom monitoring throughout the assignment to ensure all students are staying engaged and no one is left behind and/or bored because of the material. 3. Assist independent and group investigation: (Input/Modeling so kids know what to do) After I break the students into small groups, I will give them the research materials from the White House. I will explain to them that the First Lady has asked them to research using the packets of information and their health books, as well as the internet and other classroom resources to prepare a presentation that includes information on healthy eating habits and exercise guidelines. I will show the students similar proposals that are being used, such as Play 60 campaign from the NFL. I will review on the board what the students must include in their presentations, as well as what the expectations of the presentation are. 4. Develop and present artifacts and exhibits (How do students share what they have learned?) I will provide the students with a packet of White House research material. This packet will include information on junk food, statistics about childhood obesity, information on exercise, as well as health effects of obesity and non-exercise. I will provide students with page numbers from their health books to

reference for the project. I will periodically bring the small groups back to the whole group if I see that several groups are struggling with any of the reference material I provided them. If it is just one small group that appears to be struggling, I will work with them individually. 5. Analyze and evaluate the problem-solving process: Analysis and Evaluation of Questions Once the groups have completed their task and have created a poster presentation to the White House, I will bring them back as a large group to present. I will tell the class that I will be recording the presentations to show at conferences and to send to the First Lady (which I would not really do). I will ask that each group present their proposal and poster as to what types of foods we should be eating and how much we should be exercising each day. I will prepare several questions based upon the research packet I give to the students and will ask several questions to each group. I will also invite the class members to ask each group questions since everyones proposals might be different. 6. Assessment / Closure: (How do you evaluate student progress or provide closure to this lesson?) I will provide the groups with the following rubric for which they will be graded on their presentation of research.

White House Proposal

Name: ______________________________

Research material is used in a way to present healthy eating habits Research material is used in a way to present effective exercise time and/or strategies Research is presented in an effective way. Possibilities include colorful display, use of graphics, etc. Clear reasoning is cited for each proposal decision made
7. DIFFERENTIATION of Content, Process or Product: a. Adaptation for students who need extra help, time, or attention? During modeling and guided practice, I will monitor student progress to ensure understanding of the task. Where necessary, I will provide students with assistance. I will monitor all student groups and will inform the students that I may switch them to a different group if their strengths may be helpful to a different group. This way, I can move students to another group if they need additional help without them feeling that it was because they werent grasping the concept fast enough. b. Extension for students of high ability ? (Remember, gifted students need challenge). I will ask these students to assist me in writing a formal proposal to the First Lady outlining all of our classs ideas and synthesize them into one coherent plan. I will ask that they take notes on the other groups presentations and I will then work with that group of students to compile all of the suggestions into a letter format for us to send to the White House.
