Chapter 3 Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities

The Distributive property in an equation might look like this 4(84). The Distributive property is when two numbers are in the parenthesis. Then you would write out the equation as 4(80+4). Then you would solve a distributive property by taking the four and multiplying it by eighty, the first number in the parenthesis, and four times eighty is three hundred and twenty. Then you would do four times four, the second number in the parenthesis. Now you would have 320+16=336. Thats how you would solve a distribute property equation. The associative property of addition looks like this (4+2)+10= 4+(2+10). The associative property changes the grouping. When changing the problem, the sum foes not change. The Associative property of multiplication is the same thing as the associative property of addition. This is how you do associative property of addition and multiplication. The commutative property of addition changes the order of the addends factor but does not change the sum or product. For example, 6+5=5+6. When doing commutative property of multiplication its the same exact thing as the commutative property of addition. For example, 7x4=4x7. This is how you do commutative property of addition and multiplication.

When simplifying 4(7x-3) + 2x, you first do the distributive property, to remove the 7x and the -3 from the parenthesis. Then its 4 x 7x=28x and 4x3=12. The expression after doing that would be, 28x-12 +2x. Now you would have to combine like terms 28x+2x=30x. Finally the simplified answer is 30x-12. When solving the problem 7x-10-9x= -13, you would first have to combine like terms, by subtracting 7x and 9x, which would get you -2x10= -13. Then you would ad 10 to both sides of the equation. After doing that you would get -2x= -3. Then after, sense you would want to get ride of the -2, to isolate the variable, you would have to divide -2 on both sides of the equation. As your final answer you would get x= -1 . When solving 5x/6 + x/3 = 11/6 you would first have to find common denominators. In this problem the common denominator would be 6 because 3, 2, and 6 all go into 6 evenly. Then you would put the equation into parenthesis, (5x/6 + x/3 ) = (11/6 ) Then you would divide the denominator to how many times 6 goes into the first fraction. And how many times that number goes into 6, you would times the numerator by that. Which is one, so then you would do 1 times 5x, which is 5x. Then you would do 6 divided by 3, which is 2, then 2 times x, which is 2x. Now you would do 6 divided by 2 for the third fraction, which is 3 so 1 times 3. For the last fraction on the other side of the problem, you would do the same thing, 6 divided by 6 is 1 times 11, which is 11. Now the problem would look like, 5x+2x 3 = 11. Now you would combine like terms. So then you would do 5x+2x= 7x. Now our equation would look like 7x-3=11. Then on both sides of the problem you would do +3. Now we would have our equation looking like 7x=14. Then you would do divided by 7 and our final answer would be x=2. When solving and graphing 2 is less than or equal to x/-5 you would first have to do is isolate the variable, to multiply -5 on both sides. The 2 times -5=-10. Now you would have to reverse the sign in the middle and now the answer is -10 is greater than or equal to x. Now graphing this would be you would have to mark -10 on the number line, and -10 is part of the solution, so everything to the right of the number line because everything is equal or greater than -10 is the solution.

To solve the inequality -4x+4 is greater than or equal to -8. The solution of this problem would be x is less than or equal to 3. To graph this you would have to on a number line put 3, and three is part of the solution so everything below three or to the left of three on the number line. Open and closed circles on a number line: An open circle is when that the number is not part of the solution, but everything either to the right or left of it is (matters what kind of problem). A closed circle means that the number is part of the solution, and means that the variable is equal to or greater than less to the number. Solving the inequality word problems: VIII. The equation in this would be 12x is greater than or equal to 160, the first step in this problem would be to divide 12 on both sides of the equations, to isolate the variable, and end up with x is greater than or equal to 13.3, and if your round it up, it is 14. So then you would end up with b is greater than or equal to 75. The inequality would be 1/3n-36 is less than or equal to 22. First you would do is to isolate the variable, is to add 36 to both sides of the equation. Then you would end up with 1/3n is less than or equal to 58. Next you would have to do is divide 1/3 on both sides of the equation, and 58 divided by 1/3 is 174, and you would end up with n is less than or equal to 174.
