the second season of We Teach.
We Teach features educators

them for success beyond high

The idea started when some-

Mayor Randy Brown will be
having his professional team in-
vestigate the impact of tax ap-
peals should Evans Elementary
School close.
According to Township Manag-
er Bill Cromie, Brown instructed
Director of Finance Tom Shana-
han to investigate how it will af-
fect residents and the township.
Were trying to determine
some specifics by working with
the tax assessor and CFO to get
some numbers together and pos-
sibly determine how much rev-
enue we might lose if the school
closes, Cromie said.
According to Councilman Ken
DAndrea, the plan is to find what
the mathematics are behind clos-
ing it.
Is it a one-time revenue? What
does it do to property value, is
there a domino effect? DAndrea
asked. We dont know the an-
swer, but that is what the mayor
would like to find out to see the
impact on the entire township.
In other news:
The council is continuing dis-
cussion on the possibility of
building a dog park in the town-
ship.
As of last weeks meeting, the
council had Evesboro Downs as
the location where the park
would be built.
There is a need for a park in the
township, DAndrea said.
When you look at the number
of dogs that have been licensed
over the last four years, there are
almost 2,000 now in 2013, DAn-
drea said. There has been a 25
percent increase in the last five
years and it has increased each
year.
From there, youre seeing a
number of people ask: why do
the neighboring towns have one
and not us?
Due to Evesboro Downs being a
Green Acres location, a public
hearing was required at the meet-
ing.
Residents of The Vineyard at-
tended the meeting to discuss the
location of the park, DAndrea
said.
They felt it was too close to
their development. The Vine-
yards is a private development
and the area is private, Cromie
said. The residents felt one court

ontroversy surrounds almost
every bill that is proposed at
the state government level. If
the actual effects of the bill dont come
in question, then the partisanship of
it, or the motivation behind it, are
often scrutinized.
But a bill that was proposed recently
by state Sen. Richard Codey doesnt fit
into that category, at least in the world
according to us.
Codeys bill would expand New Jer-
seys distracted driving law to include
drivers who are temporarily stopped
whether in a traffic jam, red light or
stop sign. Basically, it would ban all
use of a cell phone while a person is
seated in the drivers seat of a vehicle.
The bill would also require the written
drivers test to include questions on
distracted driving.
When explaining his position on the
bill, Codey referred to the states DUI
law: If youre at a red light and youre
drunk, youre DUI, he said.
Makes perfect sense to us. Drivers
can be distracted, and cause major ac-
cidents, even if they are temporarily
stopped. How many times have you
seen other drivers because youve
never done this, right? hurriedly ac-
celerate at a light after they realize,
when they look up from their phone,
that the light has turned green? Situa-
tions like this can cause accidents.
Opponents of the bill, if they can be
considered this, are saying that the
true motives behind the bill are ques-
tionable. Even Codey admitted to this,
at least partially, saying that the real
aim of the bill is to put New Jersey in
line with federal standards for the Dis-
tracted Driving Grant Program. Cur-
rently, the states law isnt in line with
these standards, so it doesnt qualify
for grants.
To that, we say: Who cares?
Who cares if the motive behind en-
hancing New Jerseys distracted driv-
ing law is to receive federal grant
money? That money would be put to
use to educate and discourage people
from driving distracted.
Its not Codeys fault, or the Legisla-
tures fault, that the federal govern-
ment requires certain standards to re-
ceive grant money. Since that money
will go to good use, we should do what
is necessary to get it.
The only thing that should matter
here is the safety of those on the road,
and this bill enhances that safety.
in our opinion

Legislature should pass bill to ban phone usage for drivers

Senior citizens spending the holidays
alone and the needy will have a hot, home-
cooked meal for Thanksgiving and Christ-
mas.
The Marlton Business Association and
the Evesham Celebrations Foundation
have been partnering for the past decade to
ensure a good Thanksgiving this season.
The MBA Holiday Meals program en-
compasses Thanksgiving, Christmas and
Easter holidays, Dan Morton, the busi-
ness associations public liaison, said. We
typically prepare and deliver between 180-
210 hot meals to local residents, including
seniors, veterans, shut-ins and those un-
able to provide a meal for themselves and
their families.
According to Evesham Celebrations As-
sociation President Sandy Student, the
number of people who can be helped this
year is full.
We buy the food, prepare the food
Thanksgiving morning and then package
it into takeout containers, Student said.
We then deliver it to peoples homes.
According to Student, a local restaurant
hosts the cooking. The MBA and ECF make
an effort to go to a different restaurant each
holiday.
Thanksgiving is the biggest holiday
with need, Student said.
The MBA carried on the tradition start-
ing in 2005 and focused on Marlton and the
surrounding area, Morton said.
Volunteers help cook and deliver the
meals.
We typically will see 40 or so volun-
teers, mostly from the MBA but also mem-
bers of other local civic organizations, Eve-
sham council members and our police de-
partment, that have come to help and to
prepare and deliver our meals, Morton
said. Most of our volunteers will deliver
the meals, coming into contact with the re-
cipients.

the curriculum, teachers also

school and extra-curricular activ-
ities.
The series takes a new ap-
proach to reality TV by spotlight-
ing an educational environment
that hopefully encourages stu-
dents to grow and learn as well as
push them toward excellence.
We Teach hopes to give viewers
an inside look at what it takes to
be a teacher who positively im-
pacts the lives of students.
The technicians ride in the
cars with the teachers in the
morning on their way to work,
Potter said. They have discus-
sions with the teachers about
what they are thinking and how
they think the day is going to go.
They are with them as they teach
all day until they return home at
night.
The show is filmed by LDTV
staff and sponsored by Metlife
Resources-John A. Costello, a cer-
tified financial planner. The pro-
gram highlights teachers from a
variety of departments so differ-
ent curriculums and challenges
can be featured.
Half of a teachers day makes
up an episode. Thats how much
content there is. Its our only pro-
gramming that students arent
able to participate in as they
would need to be out of class liter-
ally all day, Potter said.
LDTV first began broadcasting
in 1992, allowing students to learn
television production techniques
and assist in the production of
district programs. LDTV also of-
fers LRHSD students the opportu-
nity to broadcast sports, awards
ceremonies, graduations and
other events with the use of a mo-
bile production truck. The pro-
duction truck is a fully function-
al, professional-level production
studio that has covered various
events around the district and the
state.
We certainly didnt have any-
thing like that when I was in high
school, Potter said with a laugh.
The opportunities for students
to learn are incredible. We get so
many nice emails after they grad-
uate saying how much further
along they are than other stu-
dents at the college level because
of their time with LDTV.
To see when We Teach is air-
ing, visit the community page of
the LRHSD website. Episodes can
also be seen or downloaded any-
time from the We Teach page
on iTunes or viewed on the LDTV
YouTube channel.
LDTV is the educational access
channel of the Lenape Regional
High School District and has po-
tential viewership in communi-
ties throughout Burlington, Cam-
den and Gloucester counties. It
can be viewed on Comcast chan-

other local residents and officials
that step up every year, Morton
said. I also can't thank enough
the local businesses and restau-

According to Morton, over the

Special to The Sun
Police are asking the publics
help to identify the above man.
The Evesham Police Depart-
ment is requesting the public's
help in identifying a suspect in a
recent crime:
On Nov. 4 at 5:30 p.m., the Eve-
sham Police Department respond-
ed to the Hallmark Store, 230 N.
Maple Ave., for a male who stole
$100 during a diversion scam.
Investigation determined that
the male utilized a diversion style
scam to distract and confuse the
cashier during a transaction.
When the opportunity presented
itself the male removed a $100 bill
from the cashiers hand without
her knowing.
The suspect was described as a
heavyset middle-aged male wear-
ing a dark jacket with a blue
shirt.
If anyone knows the identity of
this suspect, you are asked to con-
tact the Evesham Police Depart-
ment at (856) 983-1116, the Confi-
dential Tip Line at (856) 983-4699
or email at Facebook@Evesham-
pd.org. Anonymous tips text ET-
PDTIP to 847411.

Holiday open
house on
Nov. 22-23
is in too close proximity. Neigh-
bors felt that people wanting to
use the park would park in the de-
velopment in those spots and
walk through their develop-
ment.
Council agreed and will be
searching for another location to
host the park.
There are a number of things
we want to do in line with recre-
ation and look at the whole gam-
bit of what is recreation, DAn-
drea said. One of those is a dog
park, which is good and bad
through assessing and research-
ing dog parks throughout the
counties. We want to know what
is good and what is bad, what is
the cost? DAndrea said.
Bottom line was, council is
going to take a step back and take
a look at other locations, DAn-
drea said.
The townships website is in
need of a facelift, DAndrea said.
Randy has a great vision and
we want to be proactive, DAn-
drea said. We want to tackle our
website, looking at it from a social
media perspective from a Face-
book page, to Twitter and infus-
ing it all together.
Council will be taking a page
out of the police departments
book, which updates the Face-
book page and Twitter constantly
to keep residents informed.
Theyve done a good job of
working it and it has gotten a lot
of accolades, DAndrea said.
We want to take that and what
theyve learned and be one voice
in the community to have the rest
of the township.
Currently, council members
are developing requirements
with certain department heads to
price what a possible re-design
would cost.
At this point, the expertise
does not lie within the township,
but its not a done deal yet, DAn-
drea said.
DAndrea is floating the idea of
making the website intuitive, pos-
sibly developing an app for phone
or tablet devices to assist in bring-
ing the township up to speed.
We want to be the premier
portal or tool that other towns
can look at and say, thats a great
thing we do, DAndrea said.
The township is also looking at
other towns and seeing how web-
sites are run.
Everything is preliminary and
no decisions have been made yet,
DAndrea said.
The next township council
meeting is scheduled for Dec. 3 at
6:30 p.m.
