Types of Forces:!

Review

Normal Force: support force exerted upon an object that is in contact with another stable object.! Applied Force: force that is applied to an object by a person or another object.! Gravity Force: force with which the earth, moon, or other massively large object attracts another object towards itself. ! Friction Force: force exerted by a surface as an object moves across it or makes an effort to move across it.! Fluid Force: a special type of frictional force that acts upon objects as they travel through the air or some type of liquid.!

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces! A balanced force is a force where all other forces are balancing each other out. The NET force would be equal to zero. NO MOTION WOULD TAKE PLACE!! Example: In the diagram below the NET force would be 0N. There is 100N in the right direction and 100N in the left direction canceling out the 100N to the right." " " " " " " A unbalanced for is a force where one direction is greater than the others. The NET force would be > 0. Motion would take place when the NET force is > 0.! Example: In the diagram below the NET force would be 25N to the right. There is 100N in the right direction but only 75N going towards the left canceling out 75 of the 100N to the right.!

Relationship between gravitational force, mass, and distance! Gravitational force is related to the mass of two objects and their distance. As the mass of the objects increase so does the gravitational force as long as the distance remains the same. If the objects mass remain constant and the distance between the two objects increases then the gravitation force decreases. #

Types of Friction! Two main types of friction:! Static - friction between two surfaces that are stationary (not moving).! Kinetic - friction between two surfaces that are in motion.! Kinetic friction consists of rolling, sliding, and uid (air resistance).!

Newtons Laws of Motion! Newtons 1st Law: An object in motion stays in motion and an object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.! Newtons 2nd Law: When an external, unbalanced force acts on an object, the object will accelerate in the same direction as the force. F = m a! Newtons 3rd Law: For every action there is an EQUAL and OPPOSITE reaction.!

1. A lizard accelerates from 2 m/s to 10 m/s in 4 seconds. What is the lizards average acceleration? ! 2. An object is accelerating if it is moving _____.! 3. If an object is NOT accelerating, then one knows for sure that it is ______.! 4. A man hits a golf ball (0.2 kg) which accelerates at a rate of 20 m/s/s. What amount of force acted on the ball?! 5. A physical science textbook has a mass of 2.2 kg. What is the weight on the Earth? ! 6. Julio plays tug of war with his sister Suzie. He pulls on the rope with a force of 125N and his sister pulls back on the rope with a force of 80N. Is this a balanced or unbalanced force? Circle one.! 7. What type of force is being used by Julio and Suzie in question #6?! 8. Which of these scenarios has the greatest gravitational force?"
