Dvila MEDT 7474 Fall 2013 Bibliographical Sources Reference Logs

WorldCat.org: The World's Largest Library Catalog. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.worldcat.org/. " WorldCat is the world's largest library catalog, helping you find library materials online." Simply stated, that is the description of the bibliographic online reference database. One of the first things I noticed on this database (perhaps first hearing about this resource in Automation class) was the search box with "Everything", "Books", "DVDs", "CDs", and "Articles". The "Advanced Search" and "Find a Library" links allow for specific queries to be found. The "Most popular libraries" and "Most popular tags" assist users with searches as well. "Recent reviews" and "Recently updated lists" allow for a social networking ability to view other users lists that they have made public. Downloadable digital audio-books are available as well as article citations links to their full text. Research materials are authoritative, like "documents and photos of local or historical significance, and digital versions of rare items that aren't available to the public." Resources are available in multiple languages as diverse communities in dozens of countries are served by WorldCat. Thirteen good reasons that libraries should put their location on the global network are noted:

Your content and services are discovered through the Web's busiest sites (Google, Yahoo!) and open-source Web tools Reduced costs and increased staff productivity make the most of your budget Users search seamlessly across your OPAC, link resolvers and other catalogs and information services Items in your collection rank first in onsite search results Finding the hard-to-find items is easier People add their own reviews and notes with social networking tools Simplified display of titles held in multiple formats Resources for genealogy and other popular research segments Fill 95 percent or better of resource-sharing requests Analyze your collection for strengths, gaps and overlaps Multilingual cataloging and materials sets let you serve diverse audiences Consortiums can custom-build an all-in-one solution Product and peer support, plus help communicating value to users and funding bodies

Teachers and media specialists could use this resource daily to find local libraries that carry what they might need to borrow. As well, librarians can make use of the MARC records that the website has to offer as to update their local OPAC's collection for current information. Creating lists, bibliographies, and reviews are simple from the free account. Finally, WorldCat welcomes mutallly beneficial relationships with Web sites, information-service providers, industry vendors and others, so spread the word! Grades: 6th-adult. Subject(s): All. Overall rating: 10+.

Georgia PINES Catalog. (2013). Retrieved from http://www.gapines.org. PINES creates a statewide "borderless library" that provides equal access to information for all Georgians. Georgians with a PINES library card have access to materials beyond what is available on their local shelves and enjoy the benefits of a shared collection of 9.6 million books and other materials that can be delivered to their home library free of charge. This database came about by the Georgia Public Library Service. The acronym, PINES stands for Public Information Network for Electronic Services. Georgia Library PINES is the OPAC "and lending network for more than 275 libraries and affiliated service outlets in almost 140 countries." All residents of Georgia are eligible to receive a free PINES library card. Resource links at the bottom of the home screen are for "Libraries", "Public", "Kids", and "Trustees". Library resources allow for access to "tools and resources related to providing quality library services to Georgia citizens of all ages. Besides finding resources, public resources "offer free educational programs for children, families, and seniors - from children's story-times to home ownership workshops to computer skills trainings." Summer Reading details are listed under "Resources for Kids. Finally, Resources for Trustees included webinars, manuals, and workshops for library board members. Grades: 6th-adult. Subject(s): All Overall rating: 10+.

BHA & RILA (Getty Research Institute). (n.d.). Retrieved from http://library.getty.edu:7108/vwebv/searchBasic?sk=en_US_getty. The UWG Library's databases listed this Getty Research Institute resource as it holds both the Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) and RILA- Rpertoire de la litterature de l'art (the earlier version of BHA). For material published after 2007 see the International Bibliography of Art (IBA) at www.csa.com. The Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) is the world's most comprehensive bibliography of scholarly writing about the history of western art. BHA includes articles from over 1,200 journals. The link above leads to a list of names and ISSNs of each of those journals. BHA includes all articles within the subject scope of BHA regardless of the subject focus of a particular journal. Thus, many of the journals on this list are covered partially, as only some of their articles are within BHA's scope. BHA on the Getty Web site offers both basic and advanced search modules, and can be searched easily by subject, artist, author, article or journal title, and other elements. Note that the database search includes BHA (covering 1990-2007); the International Bibliography of Art (IBA), covering 2008 and part of 2009; and the Rpertoire de la litterature de l'art (RILA), one of the predecessors of BHA, with records that cover 1975-1989. Grades: 9th-adult. Subject(s): Art. Overall rating: 10.

A bibliography of the history of the U.S House of Representatives. (2013). History, art, and archives. Retrieved from http://history.house.gov/Records-and-Research/House-Bibliography/History-Bibliography/. The Legislative branch of the U.S. government includes the Senate and the House of Representatives as its two chambers. History, Art, and Archives is a bibliography of the history of the U.S. House of Representatives, which is a collaboration between the Office of the House historian and the Houses office of art and archives. There are three bibliographies included on this website, a standard reference page, a general works page, and a subject bibliography. Government classes in high school could use this online reference for in depth studies of the U.S. House of Representatives. Media specialists could enhance the classroom learning by extending the lesson into a bibliography lesson or review on proper citation/reference formats.
The Archives staff process the official records of the House and oversee their eventual safe transfer to the National Archives, help House committees and officers identify records for permanent retention, and provide management advice to Members for their congressional papers. The oral history program of the U.S. House of Representatives provides detailed descriptions of legislative processes and procedures, as well as recollections about the evolving nature of the institution. The interviews add a personal element to the often unfamiliar and complicated inner workings of Congress.

Sabin, J., Gale (Firm), & Thomson Gale (Firm). (2013). Sabin Americana, 1500-1926. Farmington Hills, MI: Gale Cengage Learning. Retrieved from http://galenet.galegroup.com/servlet/Sabin?locID=carr52158&helppg=sabn_about.htm&ste=23#desc ription. The following three paragraphs are quotations from the database. "Joseph Sabin's Bibliotheca Americana was produced over the course of nearly 60 years. As the introduction to the final volume notes: "'Sabin' is not the work of two or three individuals but is a greater cooperative enterprise which never could have reached its present usefulness without the aid of hundreds of persons whose names and services were known only to the editorial staff. Librarians, cataloguers, scholars and collectors have searched their shelves and their historical notes in order to make these records more complete." "In the compilation process, the Sabin editorial staff worked from auction catalogs, bookseller lists and the holdings of libraries across the country and in Europe. The goal was to create robust title lists that confirmed through personal inspection (or inquiry of the source library for such an inspection) of an original copy of the work. Alternate editions and related works were either compiled into the same bibliographical reference or were made part of the annotations that have proven invaluable for bibliographic scholarship." "Sabin reaches into all aspects of American history and culture. It touches upon the political and religious life in North America and at times South America and the Caribbean. It features American and European views of the colonization of the Americas, the American Revolution, the days of the early Republic and Jacksonian period, the antebellum period, Civil War, era of Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction, the settlement of the West and the onset of the Gilded Age. Through published pamphlets, tracts, memoirs, congressional legislation, correspondence, broadsides, biographies, histories, fiction and poetry, eulogies, sermons and innumerable other genres, Sabin opens a window onto the Americas through which few get to glimpse. American History and Culture Online: The Sabin Collection, 1500-1926, is one such window, through which one can see the following and so much more:" I chose this resource specifically as fourth grade CCGPS includes early American explorers in its curriculum. As I have worked with classroom teachers as ESOL support, I have had found amazing success with close reading of primary sources. The mini-lesson that the classroom teacher conducted as well as the model lesson from the academic coach both incorporated the value of using old letters, poems, speeches, etc. to help students understand the past. As a media specialist, the skills of information literacy can be reinforced through basic and advanced search skills lessons and reviews. Grades: 9th - Adult. Subject(s): Social Studies (American History). Overall rating: 10+.
