From your Professional Development Director ...

The Holiday Season is Here! While this time of year brings celebration, good food & cheer, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on the New Year ahead and the professional goals that will make it more successful than the previous year. As many of you know, beginning January 2014, ASID members will be required to complete 10 CEU credits every two years. This is a noticeable increase from previous years. And while we will be doing our very best to provide beneficial learning opportunities on the local level, ASID national can also serve as a highly valuable resource to make this happen for you. Heres the scoop on CEUs and an overview of what ASID national can offer: The ASID Board of Directors approved an increase of required CEUs for all members in the Allied, Professional and Associate categories. Currently, ASID has the lowest CEU requirement (0.6) among the organizations representing the built environment. Raising CEU requirements brings ASID in line with its industry peers and expands member knowledge. This member requirement strengthens the interior design profession by improving individual attitudes, competencies, knowledge and skills in subject areas essential to the growth and success of the industry. Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the CEU requirement will increase from 0.6 to 1.0 (i.e., 10 hours). Note that this does not affect the current reporting period, requiring 0.6 CEUs by Dec. 31, 2013. The first reporting period with the new 1.0 CEU requirement will begin January 1, 2014 and end on Dec. 31, 2015. ASID is also expanding eligible CEUs making it easier to reach 1.0. Approved CEUs such as webinars and chapter events will continue, with the addition of activities such as authoring a book or article, keynote speaking engagements, receiving tenure and more. Practitioner members (professional, allied, associate members) of the Society will be required to complete 10 contact hours of continuing education coursework every two years. To qualify, coursework must be taken from an approved provider such as: IDCEC State Regulatory Board CIDA-accredited college/university You can also take online courses for credit at anytime at ASID UNi - www.asiduni.org or visit the IDCEC website and click on Events Calendar. ASID-UNi offers dozens of tailored, interactive e-learning solutions for practitioner and Industry Partner members and is designed specifically for the interior design industry. It offers IDCEC approved CEUs online 24-7 aimed at some of interior designs most pressing health safety, welfare and general practice issues. Tap into the ASID Web Events for live and on-demand webinars that are convenient, affordable and easy to access while never leaving the comforts of your home or office. Another valuable resource are the courses offered under ASIDs new Business Strategies curriculum designed to provide our members with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in todays competitive marketplace. The ASID Business Strategies courses each provide 0.1 of IDCEC-approved credit per hour. Current topics include Finance 101 for Interior Design Businesses, Sustainability Action Plan, Business Ethics and Principles and more. Visit www.asid.org/businessstrategies for more information. And in the meantime, as always, please contact me with ideas about the kind of professional development you would like to see offered, including topics, tours, and speakers. This is your society lets make it work for you! Cynthia A. Hahn, Allied ASID Kolp&HahnDesignFirm kolphahndesign@gmail.com

From your Communications Director ...

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Brittany Walsh, I am your Communications Director for 2014-2015. I am a fairly recent grad from Michigan State University with a degree in Interior Design and I have a passion for getting more people involved in our local chapter of ASID. I've witnessed some of the exciting changes within the realm of getting information to our members and plan to build on those in the next few years. One of my goals is to incorporate more use of social media to engage our members of all ages but especially our student members who get 90% of their information from their Facebook or Twitter feeds. Another goal is to invigorate our publications, whether they be this very newsletter or invitations to ASID events. I believe that having an attractive first impression in these various outlets will grow our membership and encourage participation in events throughout the year. Keep your eyes peeled for fresh new ASID publication designs in your inbox and mailboxes throughout the year! Also look forward to a more active Facebook and Twitter page with help from a social media team that I am building as we speak. If you would like to help with social media posts, have an eye for graphic design or a knack for writing articles for the newsletter let me know by emailing me at walshb.id@gmail.com and I might have a great way for you to get involved in our chapter. Have a wonderful holiday season! - Brittany Walsh

A word about our new Sponsorhsip Program from Suzanne Buckley...

Your Chapter Needs YOU! Introducing the NEW 2014 ASID Michigan Chapter Annual Sponsorship Program The Annual Sponsorship Program was developed to address the issue of needing additional funding for the Michigan Chapter to augment the funding that comes from ASID National through membership dues. In CLC discussions over the past few years, the chapters that took this approach found it to be very successful. It is part of our Chapters Strategic Plan and is being rolled out now because the timing for companies to develop budgets is typically in the late fall. Annual Sponsors can be companies or individuals. We are giving discounts to Industry Partners and the amount of the discount is the amount to become an Industry Partner. So, we are hoping we may also add some new Industry Partners to our Chapter as well. Please take a look at the Sponsorship Program and think about colleagues, vendors, contractors or anyone who might benefit from a strong relationship with Michigan Interior Designers. It really is a GREAT opportunity! If you have someone in mind to contact, please reach out to either Debbie Gonzalez (248-649-6770/admin@asidmi. org) or Suzanne Buckley (586-383-3656/s.g.buckley@hotmail.com ) for further information including the Application Forms. While this is an ongoing effort, the benefits apply for the 2014 Calendar year so sign-up timing by the end of the year is a factor.
