This course will examine selected great poems from a wide range of poetry in English. We will read poetry such as the great English romantic poets, the work of Whitman, Dickinson, and Hopkins, and we will explore poetry of the 20th and 21st century. Technical aspects of poetry will be covered, and we will also look at themes and issues that recur in poetry. Consideration will be given to scholarly criticism of poetry, but the main thrust of the course will be reading poetry for comprehension and appreciation of one of the greatest human forms of expression. This course may be taken only once for credit.
