East Bay Dear Sirs:

June 7, 2013

HAPA appreciates your ongoing commitment to sustainability, as recognized in the May 23, 2013, issue of the HAPA News that we sent you. We urge CSUEB to make an even stronger commitment. We hope that you will appoint a quarter time or greater position as CSUEB Sustainability Director in order to move your process forward more quickly. And, HAPA would like to talk with you about defining the roles and responsibilities of the position, and the tasks and timeline for sustainability milestones. Among the tasks could be: Complete the STARS survey soon. Some Cal campuses have made good progress. Cal Poly Pomona and Chanel Islands have achieved silver, and Monterrey Bay has achieved gold. Monterey Bay committed several staff to get the survey done. Use the website and newsletters to report existing consumption of fuel, electricity, and water, using current billing information or meters, and add a score card to the website showing CSUEB environmental sustainability progress. Install additional equipment to track university energy and water use in more detail. List key university contacts on the web site for those wanting more information on CSUEBs sustainability programs. Improve communication with the campus and the public by publishing a regular sustainability newsletter. Make significant improvements to the shuttle bus and track ridership gains. HAPA has an ambitious list of upgrades and ideas to be considered. Publicize the shuttle on the website (as well as around campus and at BART) as an aspect of CSUEBs environmental sustainability program. Work more closely with the City of Hayward on the its General Plan Update, for shuttle right-of-way upgrades and for faster, improved access off Hayward Blvd. Support university-related, sustainable residential development near the campus, where important issues on Carlos Bee Blvd. will be pending within a few months. HAPA does not have the capacity to help with all the work that needs to be done, but there are issues where we may be of help. And, we hope CSUEB administration will commit more staff resources to sustainability issues to get more done more quickly. Sincerely,

Sherman Lewis, President Directors Joy Rowan, Gail Lundholm, Steve Murtaugh, Bruce Barrett, Minane Jameson, Brian Stanke Hayward Area Planning Association 2787 Hillcrest Ave. Hayward CA 94542. 510-538-3692; sherman@csuhayward.us
