Tech II Semester Regular Examinations September 2009 POWER SYSTEM RELIABILITY (Electrical Power Systems) Time: 3hours Max.Marks:60 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks --1.a) b) With a suitable example, explain the salient features of the unit removal algorithm. A system consists of three generating units, A, B and C. A and B are rated for 10MW and C is rated for 20MW. The failure and repair rates are 0.4 and 9.6, respectively, per year. Obtain the approximate capacity outage probability table with a rounding off increment of 12MW. The chronological load curve cannot be used in the frequency and duration method substantiate. Discuss the various steps of a procedure to calculate the system failure probability and failure frequency with reduced computational effort. Discuss the various components of the operating reserve. If the generation reserve consists of hot, cold, spinning and rapid-start units, explain how the short term risk can be evaluated. Discuss the weather effects on transmission lines. Explain what you mean by common-mode failure. Draw and explain the statespace diagram of two components with common mode failures included. Discuss the advantages of the interconnected operation of power systems. Discuss the various steps involved in obtaining the cumulative failure frequency of two interconnected systems with correlated loads. Give the following data pertaining to a distribution system, calculate: i) CAIFI ii) CAIDI iii) ACCI iv) ENS. 2 1,000 5,000 3 800 3,400 4 600 3,000 5 300 2,400 6 500 1,800
