ENGLISH AND PORTUGUESE VOWEL PHONEMES COMPARED

The language varieties used in this phonological analysis are the American and the Brazilian, and when we here refer to vowels, we mean vowel sounds (phonemes). We do not refer to letters of the alphabet (graphemes). Vowels are speech-sounds produced by a continuous flow of air and vibration of vocal cords. In the majority of the languages the difference between vowels is perceived not in intensity nor pitch, but in the timbre of the sound. Different timbres are produced by the position of the tongue in the mouth, changing the shape of the oral cavity. Vowel sounds can thus be realized on a continuum by an almost infinite number of intermediate positions of the tongue inside the oral cavity. In less compact languages, with a small number of 1-syllable words and a higher average of syllables per word, the number of vowel phonemes does not need to be large and the difference between each vowel can be bigger. This is the case of Spanish (5 vowel phonemes) and Portuguese (7 vowel phonemes). English, however, is a language extremely economic in the use of syllables, very compact, with a large number of 1-syllable words. Naturally, this requires a larger number of vowel phonemes to supply the bigger "demand" of a system with a reduced number of possible combinations. Therefore, phonological systems with a large number of vowel phonemes, require additional hearing accuracy from the speakers in recognition and production. The problem is aggravated by the fact that there are no distinct boundaries between one type of vowel or another. When

Ou seja, estamos falando de pronncia e no de ortografia; de fonemas e no de grafemas. Por exemplo, nas palavras v e v do portugus temos dois fonemas vogais diferentes. Vogais so sons da fala humana produzidos por um fluxo de ar contnuo, acompanhado de vibrao das cordas vocais. O que diferencia uma vogal da outra, na maioria das lnguas, no a intensidade nem a freqncia, mas o timbre. Diferentes timbres so produzidos pelo posicionamento da lngua na boca, que muda a forma da cavidade bucal. Sons vogais variam portanto de forma contnua, podendo ser produzidos por um nmero praticamente infinito de posies intermedirias da lngua dentro da cavidade bucal. Em lnguas menos compactas, com menor ocorrncia de palavras monossilbicas e com uma mdia superior de slabas por palavra, o nmero de fonemas vogais no precisa ser to grande e a diferena entre cada vogal pode ser maior. Este o caso do espanhol (5 fonemas vogais) e do portugus (7 fonemas vogais). O ingls, entretanto, uma lngua notadamente econmica no uso de slabas, compacta, com um grande nmero de palavras monossilbicas. Isto naturalmente exige um nmero maior de fonemas vogais para atender a essa maior "demanda" de um sistema com um nmero reduzido de combinaes possveis. Portanto, em sistemas fonolgicos com um grande nmero de fonemas vogais, a diferena entre cada um tende a ser mnima, o que exige uma maior acuidade auditiva de parte dos falantes dessa lngua tanto no reconhecimento quanto na produo oral. O problema agravado pelo fato de que no existem delimitaes claras e precisas entre vogais. No estudo da fonologia, a descrio e a classificao das consoantes muito mais fcil. Um

describing consonants the categories are much more distinct. A sound may be a stop or a fricative, but it can hardly be half way between the two. It is perfectly possible, however, to produce a vowel that is half way between a high vowel and a mid vowel. Therefore, achieving the correct vowel position is perhaps the most significant and persistent problem not only for learners of English as a foreign language that speak Portuguese or Spanish as a native language, but also for speakers of all languages that do not have as large a number of vowels in the spectrum as English. The number of vowels with phonemic significance, therefore, is a determining factor in the degree of difficulty to attain oral proficiency and a good pronunciation. Although in this work we identify only eleven vowels for American English, Mazurkiewicz (69) counted at least fifteen vowels whereas DEugenio found even more: It is a well-known fact that English is phonetically rich in vowels, containing not less than twenty vocalic phonemes (twelve pure vowels and eight diphthongs) (54). Given the inherent limitations of the human speech articulatory system, it follows that all possible vowel sounds will fall necessarily on the same spectrum (see figure below) and that the difference between one phoneme and the next may well reach the limit of the human hearing perception. The higher the number of vowels, the more subtle the difference among them will be. For this reason, it can become extremely difficult to maintain a clear distinction between phonemes in such an enriched inventory of phonemic units (as in English) produced by such a limited articulatory system. This problem is inherently more difficult in the sense of initial language acquisition when it takes longer for the child to learn to distinguish among all the vowels, and particularly harder for the foreign language learner when the native language

som pode ser uma oclusiva ou uma fricativa, mas dificilmente poder ser classificado como algo intermedirio. perfeitamente possvel, entretanto, produzir um som intermedirio entre uma vogal alta e uma mdia. Portanto, este talvez seja o maior e mais persistente problema no apenas para estudantes de ingls como lngua estrangeira que falam portugus ou espanhol como lngua materna, mas para todos aqueles cujas lnguas no possuem um nmero to grande de vogais dentro do espectro voclico quanto o ingls. O nmero de vogais com relevncia fonmica em uma lngua portanto um fator determinante do grau de dificuldade em se obter proficincia oral e uma boa pronncia. Embora neste trabalho tenhamos identificado apenas onze vogais para o ingls norteamericano, Mazurkiewicz (69) relacionou pelo menos quinze vogais, ao passo que DEugenio encontrou ainda mais: notrio o fato de que o ingls rico no nmero de vogais, contendo nada menos do que vinte fonemas voclicos (doze vogais puras e oito ditongos) (54, minha traduo). Considerando a anatomia do sistema articulatrio humano que produz a fala, suas limitaes, e considerando o fato bvio de que no existem diferenas fisiolgicas no aparelho articulatrio entre pessoas de diferentes nacionalidades, podemos concluir que todos os sons vogais, de todos os idiomas possveis, recairo sobre o mesmo espectro (veja figura abaixo) e que as diferenas entre um fonema e outro prximo podero chegar ao limite da perceptibilidade da audio humana. Portanto, quanto maior for o nmero de vogais de uma determinada lngua, tanto menor e mais sutil ser a diferena entre elas. Desta forma, torna-se muito difcil manter uma distino clara entre vogais dentro de um inventrio to repleto de fonemas (como no ingls) e, ao mesmo tempo, produzido por um aparelho articulatrio to limitado. Em primeiro lugar, este um problema que afeta a assimilao da lngua materna, fazendo com que a criana leve mais tempo at conseguir distinguir todas as vogais. Em segundo lugar, e com maior insistncia, o estudante de lngua estrangeira ser afetado, principalmente quando a lngua materna tiver um nmero de vogais menor do que o nmero de vogais da lngua estrangeira. has a smaller number of phonemes than the target language. The same way that Spanish native speakers have an obvious difficulty to tell apart Portuguese words like p and p, v and v, Portuguese native speakers will have a hard time hearing the difference between certain English vowels, as we will explain below. NASALITY: One fact to be addressed when analyzing vowel speech sounds is nasality. Nasality is produced by the lowering of the velum, so that part of the air stream is free to pass through the nasal cavity which functions as a resonance chamber. It alters the sound just by adding a new feature but leaving all the other features unchanged and unobscured. Portuguese is notorious for its strong nasality. In certain dialects it can actually be considered phonemic and a stricter phonological analysis of the language would identify at least 3 additional nasal vowel phonemes as demonstrated by the following minimal pairs: l - l pau - po pais - pes The fact that Portuguese (as well as French and Polish, among the European languages) makes large use of the additional distinctive phonetic feature of nasalization reinforces the argument presented here. On the one hand, the nasality of Portuguese will represent a difficulty for foreign learners and cause an obvious foreign accent, and on the other hand, it does not help at all Brazilian learners of English. They will actually face two difficulties: suppressing nasality and still dealing with the large inventory of vowel phonemes of English, produced by only one distinctive feature - minimal differences of tongue position. TENSENESS: This is another distinctive feature in speech sounds that deserves attention. Tenseness, produced by the tension of the vocalization muscles, is a characteristic that occurs in 4 of the English

NASALIDADE: Uma questo a ser analisada no estudo da fontica, a nasalidade. A nasalidade produzida pelo rebaixamento parcial de uma membrana chamada palato mole ou vu palatino, de maneira que nas vogais, parte do fluxo de ar passa atravs da cavidade nasal, a qual funciona ento tambm como cmara de ressonncia. Isto altera o som apenas pelo fato de acrescentar uma caracterstica nova, deixando as demais caractersticas da vogal inalteradas. O portugus notrio pela forte nasalidade que o caracteriza. Em alguns dialetos, esta nasalidade pode adquirir relevncia fonmica (no apenas fontica) e uma anlise fonolgica da lngua poderia facilmente identificar pelo menos 3 fonemas vogais nasais alm dos relacionados neste estudo, como demonstram os seguintes pares mnimos: l - l pau - po pais - pes O fato de o portugus (assim como tambm o francs e o polons) fazer largo uso da nasalidade refora o argumento aqui apresentado. Por um lado, a nasalidade do portugus representa uma dificuldade para aprendizes estrangeiros, se constituindo em mais um elemento causador de interferncia e sotaque. Por outro lado, a nasalidade do portugus em nada ajuda seus falantes nativos em seu aprendizado de lnguas estrangeiras. Pelo contrrio, os aprendizes brasileiros de ingls, enfrentam uma dupla dificuldade: eliminar a nasalidade ao mesmo tempo em que enfrentam o desafio de assimilar um sistema com um nmero maior de vogais cuja nica caracterstica diferenciadora so as mnimas diferenas no posicionamento da lngua. TENSO: outra caracterstica diferenciadora na articulao de sons vogais que merece ateno. Produzida pela tenso dos msculos articuladores, uma caracterstica que pode ser observada em 4 das vogais do ingls, enquanto que inexistente em portugus. Representa portanto uma probabilidade

* Glided and tense vowels: For the representation

of the English glide vowels (also called tense vowels) I prefer a two-character transcription including the off-glides, to distinguish them from the lax vowels.

PROBABLE ERRORS WITH VOWELS: These are the most common errors with the English vowels made by Portuguese native speakers. A) The first problem, and perhaps the most evident, will occur in the vicinity of the front/ high vowels. The English /iy/ and /I/ are very likely to be perceived and produced as Portuguese /i/, thus neutralizing the contrast between words like:

Since the English phonemes /iy/ and /I/ carry a very heavy functional load, any neutralization in this area becomes a problem of major significance.

Uma vez que os fonemas /iy/ e /I/ do ingls tm uma carga funcional muito ampla, isto , ocorrem com muita freqncia como nico elemento diferenciador, qualquer neutralizao nesta rea pode representar um srio problema.

B) Another problem likely to occur is around the English //. Both English phonemes /e/ and // will be perceived as Portuguese //, which is in fact a little closer to English /e/ than //. This will neutralize the contrast between words like:

C) The English mid-central //, especially when stressed, has no counterpart in Portuguese, which causes the possibility of phonological error. Also, its unstressed and reduced form, named schwa, is likely to become a persistent problem if we consider that Portuguese unstressed vowels are not normally reduced. Very likely Brazilian ESL students will be influenced by spelling in this area. Example: the word photographer might be pronounced / ftgrafr/ instead of the correct /

ftagrfr/.

C) A vogal mdia-central neutra // do ingls, especialmente quando tnica, no tm equivalente em portugus, o que significa possibilidade de erro fonolgico. Tambm a forma reduzida e atnica deste fonema, denominada "xev" ou "xu", (de alta ocorrncia no ingls), representa uma notria dificuldade mesmo a longo prazo. Isto porque no portugus vogais atnicas no so reduzidas e neutralizadas como em ingls. muito provvel que o aluno brasileiro venha a ser influenciado pela ortografia neste caso. A palavra photographer, por exemplo, poder vir a ser pronunciada /ftgrafr/ em vez do correto /ftagrfr/.

D) Portuguese native speakers will also experience difficulty distinguishing between English /a/ and /o/. Most of the times /a/ will be perceived as Portuguese //. This is reinforced by the fact that the English /a/ is many times spelled with the letter o, often corresponding in Portuguese to // as in p, which is very similar to English /o/ as in law. This will cause foreign accent for sure, with the possibility of phonological error in minimal pairs like:

E) Another source of problems will be the back/ high vowels. The Portuguese /u/ falls right between English /U/ and /uw/. As a result, perception and production of these phonemes will follow the single pattern of Portuguese /u/, neutralizing the contrast between words like:

PRONUNCIATION MODELS The memorization of pronunciation models can help with articulation difficulties in the target language. The following sentences provide good vowel pronunciation models, because they exhibit the whole inventory of English vowels.

FRASES-MODELO PARA PRONNCIA DE VOGAIS Decorar com pronncia correta um modelo contendo todas as vogais do ingls, pode ser de grande valia para o aluno de ingls. As frases abaixo constituem-se excelentes modelos de pronncia de vogais.

The above sentences not only portray the full inventory of vowels, but also place them on a scale ranging from front-high to front-low in the first example and from backhigh to mid-low in the second example. The student who memorizes these sentences with the right pronunciation will have available at all times the matrix of English vowel sounds to resort to. Sentences featuring minimal pairs which contrast commonly mistaken phonemes are also worth memorizing. Consider the following examples:
