Safety & Awareness

Safety & Awareness

It’s time we collectively started a proactive rather than reactive approach to motorcycle involved casualties. The key is education and awareness.

The benefit ride for Cape Coral Police Officer Damien Garcia on June 27th included 200 bikes

and raised $,200. It showed how our community can come together to help one of our own

that has been injured.

Safety & Awareness It’s time we collectively started a proactive rather than reactive approach to motorcycle

However, instead of time after time, coming

to the aid of our inured and slain, it’s time

we collectively started a proactive rather

than reactive approach to motorcycle

involved casualties. The key is education and

awareness.

Existing programs such as Stay Alive ...

Just Drive! and ABATE of Florida’s MSAP

(Motorcycle Safety Awareness Program)

are out there and working to save our lives.

Going into drivers’ education classrooms and company meeting rooms are just the start. These

programs can go much further and can save more lives and heartache by contribution of time

and/or money.

Imagine a whole year

without going to a benefit

ride for a fallen brother

or sister rider. Imagine

having a large event to

Nitrogen it’s a gas, gas, gas I met with Walter Mercier of Walter’s Automotive Service Center

I met with Walter Mercier of Walter’s

Automotive Service Center on McGregor

Boulevard in Fort Myers to discuss the benefits

of tires filled with Nitrogen gas. Walter’s uses

the NitroFill™ system.

As compared to regular air, Nitrogen has a

few advantages:

It is a dry gas and free of

moisture, which can cause corrosion inside the

tire on the rim. Nitrogen doesn’t deteriorate

rubber like “wet Oxygen” does. Nitrogen is a

larger molecule and doesn’t permeate through

the rubber as fast. Nitrogen pressure does

not change as drastically with temperature

changes, eliminating high pressure while

running hot and lower pressures when cold.

month. I’ve had people go longer than that,

and you really shouldn’t, and still maintain

their pressure.”

The cost? $9.9 for a car, $60 for a truck with

larger tires, and $10 a tire for motorcycles. So,

will this cost another $10 per tire when you

bring your bike back in three months? “For

the period of one year, you’re covered,” says

Walter. “If you register online, they email you

about every three months to check your tires.”

Registering online also enrolls you in the

NitroFill™ Auto Club, which includes road

Claims made by NitroFill™ include: Increases

tire life up to 0%. Improves fuel economy.

Reduces the chance of tire failure up to 0%.

Improves braking and handling. Reduces

running tire temperature. Reduces wheel

corrosion. Maintains proper tire pressure.

Does Walter himself use Nitrogen? “I’ve been

using it for probably a year and a half,” he says.

“When I first started it, I didn’t believe in it.

So I put it in my car and waited three months

before I checked the air in my tires, all at

pounds, and three months later they were all

within one pound of pounds. Normally, I

would put in two to three pounds every

service, battery service, and a few more added

extras except for road hazard on the bikes.

Pretty reasonable, when compared to other

services.

Nitrogen it’s a gas, gas, gas I met with Walter Mercier of Walter’s Automotive Service Center

So, if you’re a skeptic,

what can $20 hurt for

a year? I’m currently

giving it a try on the

Rocket, and those tires

are expensive. Already,

I can tell that the tires

don’t feel as spongy in

the mornings.

T he original title of this event was actually so long it was a full page story in itself! Held on

6-27-2009 at the Sun Sports Cycle and Watercraft Mall in Fort Myers, it was actually

more than just a block party. It consisted of a block party atmosphere with motorcycles, lawn

tractor pull, bike show, daisy duke & boots contest and music & vendors. The place was so busy

it was almost confusing! Once again, Katie put on one amazing show. RoninRC assisted with

the parking duties and I can attest to the fact that it was still hot and humid as it was earlier in

the day. The show started at 6pm and the lawn tractor people flooded the parking lot almost

immediately. We ended up with the surrounding grass and ditch areas filled with trucks and

trailers and were lucky we had enough room in the event for the motorcycle parking which got

crowded in a hurry. The vendors kept things interesting and the music rocked things all night

long. The rest of the event went extremely well and the tractor folks held one hell of a show.

All in all it was a great pre 4 th of July and thanks to Katie and all who helped make it great. The

proceeds from this event went to the Damien Garcia fund.

To Start it was a great mornin’ to ride inland

to the Big “O”. River Road was clear all the

way out, and we took advantage of that. We

Stopped for a short break at the Pure Station

out on 78 and ran into a old guy on a bike he

paid 200 bucks for, he kept tellin’ us what a

great bike it was ...

Well back on the road and after turning NE on

78, headed up the West side of Lake O where

I ran head-on into a Red tail Hawk. Now

that is NOT fun at 6 miles an hour. I pulled

off the road cleaned off the stuff and we were

back on the road. Soon after, we pulled into

The Aruba Cafe n Tiki Bar. We were greeted

by the owners Lori and Russ who came out

to meet us and welcome us to their new cute

little place.

W ell Kids if ya didn’t go with the ole Turtle today, ya missed it. Three

Lori is a real trip and was full of questions as

was Russ. We met a few of the locals there,

such as the BILL brothers, KEG Bill, and

Electric Bill. They keep the place open HA

HA!!!! Nice guys really. Lori fed us a great

lunch of O rings, chicken fingers, cheese

burgers n hot dogs with sodas.

After lunch Lori took Joe then me for a ride

around the Campground, (the 0 dollar tour

for 0.) Mostly small travel trailers n such but

very neat n clean. There is even a motel there.

Fisherman’s creek runs right by and around the

place and the fishing is great they say. Seems

they had opened the flood gates as the creek

was full and moving faster than normal.

If you’re looking for a nice short day ride this is

a great spot to go. Lori n Russ are great hosts

and love the company, and that is what we felt

like too, company rather than just folks riding

thru. So go out there say hey and tell them the

ole Turtle sent ya. You will be surprised at the

place the prices and the Ombiance.

W ell Kids if ya didn’t go with the ole Turtle today, ya missed it. Three

On the way back we were west of LaBelle

and guess what? I ran over a black snake in

the middle of the road. OK time for the old

Turtle to get out of here till next time.

Ride Safe Everyone

For the summer so far its TURTLE Wildlife

0 (I am counting the Black Bear a saw a few

weeks before) came very close to hitting him

too ...

Damien Garcia Benefit Run

Pictures & story by Mike “Tigger” Sergeys additional photos by Turtle & ATM

A s is the case more and more, this run was not really a celebration of bikers having a great

time doing what they do best which is riding their bikes. This time it took a sad and tragic

event to gather us on a hot and humid summer day. Several factors came together days earlier

when Cape Coral Motorcycle Officer Damien Garcia was involved in a tragic collision between

his motorcycle and an SUV. Damien was critically injured and on the day of this ride was still in

a Miami hospital with family and friends praying for his recovery.

Damien Garcia Benefit Run Pictures & story by Mike “Tigger” Sergeys additional photos by Turtle &

Meanwhile two hundred or so bikers from the

surrounding area gathered at Victory Lane Café

for the police escorted parade that would be the

start of this event. Organized by Dave Lawler,

Ron Cox, and Kurt Berkholtz and assisted by over

fifteen local citizens and businesses including

the DefendersMC who volunteered to work the

event, it turned out to be a great day. The ride was

escorted by Lee County Sheriff’s Deputies who

did the usual amazing job of keeping the parade

moving at a steady but safe pace. It was also

pretty cool of the Cape Coral Police Department

and the fire station to light up everything

they had as we went past their locations.

We ended up at Geo’s Italian Restaurant were

George made sure we were all taken care of

quickly and efficiently. Some of us ate from the

menu even though there was pizza served for the

run and no matter which way you went it was

all good. After eating, we all went outside to the

band stand and listened to the music for a while

until the prizes were called. Special thanks to

Joe who won the 0/0 and donated it back to

the cause. One thing I will say is that whoever

arranged the prizes and gifts did an outstanding

job, as I don’t think I have ever seen such a huge

array of gifts available at one event. All in all,

I heard there was in excess of $200.00 raised

for Damien and the show of love and support for

him was extremely evident. Thanks to all who

came out and rode with us and special thanks to

all those who worked so very hard to put it on.

Here’s to a quick recovery for Damien.

IRON RHINO
Monster Bike Fest
O n Sunday, July 5 th , InTown Rider and friends went on down past
Naples to be a part of the Monster Bike Fest held on the edge of
the Everglades at the Iron Rhino Saloon.
Due to so many bikes already there, we had difficulty finding parking
space, but were able to squeeze in. Gary, the Iron Rhino’s proprietor
(biker owned and biker operated) had put on quite a shindig. We had
good live music and great food. It seemed very crowded inside, but
there we could still find spaces to sit so we could eat lunch.
Speaking with Gary, he talked about using this event to give back to
the community. This won’t become a monthly event, but it will happen
again a few times a year. We’re looking forward to the next fest.

Rev, White, and Boom

July 3 rd saw the annual Rev, White, and Boom Bike Night hosted by Victory Lane Motorcycles in Estero. There was a large turnout Friday evening with people braving the traffic to enjoy the day complete with vendors and Victory Motorcycle test rides. When the fireworks lit up, the lights went down and we all enjoyed the show coming across from Germain Arena. If you weren’t there, here’s a little peek at what we saw.

This time of year, breakfast rides are more popular

as you can avoid the majority of the heat and rain.

Taking a ride on down to Marco is a nice getaway

early in the morning. There are few places that

serve breakfast, but we suggest hitting Susie’s

Breakfast & Lunch at 101 N Collier Boulevard.

On the left side as you come in, just before Bald

Eagle Drive, there is plenty of parking, and even

some shade if you are there early enough. Good

food, and incredibly fast service await you, but

bring cash, because they haven’t installed the

credit card machine yet.

Afterwards, you can keep heading down Collier

for the Rhino, Big Cypress Market Place Flea

designated cement motorcycle parking and a

License Renewal

It has been about five years since I have had to go down to the driver’s license bureau to renew my license. This time, I was informed that I had to come down in person and present a Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, or US Passport. So, with my birthday looming, I ran on over to the Cape with my documentation in hand to face the periodic ordeal of renewing a State of Florida Driver’s License.

To my surprise, my usual office, which was nestled away behind the Shriner’s Temple was now vacant. The horror,

  • I thought, there was no way to get to the Fort Myers office in time to get through the whole procedure. Plus, historically, the Fort Myers office always had an immense line, starting before the doors even open. Even more of

(Rev, White and Boom cont. from page 13) License Renewal It has been about five years

a concern, was that I did not have another scheduled weekday off from work in order to get to another office.

Working out a day off with my supervisor at the water plant, I checked online to find where they had relocated my office. To my surprise, the both of the offices I know about had moved. The one closest to me, in Fort Myers, had moved from in front of the Florida Highway Patrol station at Page Field over to the AAA office on Colonial just east of Fowler.

  • I brought a note pad and pen with me to work on articles for InTown Rider, but I was pleasantly surprised to have

everything completed before I was able to write the third paragraph of this article. The license bureau is located within the AAA office and does not issue the drivers tests. I was informed that one would have to go to Cape Coral for that. Fine for those of us just in need of a renewal. No numbers to grab here, just give your name at the information desk and have a seat. After presenting my credentials, the picture taking was very quick, and the issuing of my new license was faster than ever before. I was in and out of the building in less than a half an hour.

Afterwards, I headed on down to the Lee County Tax Collector’s office, where I had just done some business a few weeks ago, to renew the tag on the Rocket. Another surprise awaited me when there was a large sign with a map on the door explaining where the new location was. A couple of miles down Pine Ridge Road got me to the new building. I didn’t even have a chance to sit down at the tax collector’s office. Just an express ticket from the info desk, then presentation of my paperwork and a quick check, and I was out the door. I was flabbergasted. I hope that the next time I need to renew my official papers, things go this fast, as long as they stay put. To find out the locations of your license bureaus and tax collector offices, visit InTownRider.com and click on “State Offices.” Good luck, and ride safe!
