Nagpur

Nagpur, lying bang at the center mark of India's geography, the Orange City of India is also said to be the second capital of Maharashtra. When To Go
Nagpur climate is dry / mildly humid all through the year. Summers (March to June) are extremely hot and temperatures can rise up to a staggering of 49C. Monsoons (July to September) records medium to heavy rainfalls annually. Winters (November to January) are very pleasant with a minimum temperature of around 10C.

History
Nagpur's first reference dates back to the 10th century, when an inscription on a copper-plate was discovered at Devali in the neighboring Wardha District. Many illustrious dynasties like the Vakataka Dynasty during the 4th century, Badami Chalukya's, the Rashtrakuta's and finally the Yadava's - all left their mark on this city. The city was later captured by the Mughal Empire & the present day city of Nagpur is credited to have been founded by the Bakut Buland - who was the last prince of the Deogarh-Nagpur Kingdom. Nagpur also played part in the Non-Cooperation Movement which was launched in the 1920 political session in the city. It was only after 1950 that the Central Provinces & Berar became the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh & Nagpur was made its capital. Linguistic reorganizations in the state brought about the further divide into Gujarat & Madhya Pradesh & Maharashtra. And present day Nagpur lies in the state of Maharashtra - which geographically lies at the center of the countries map & the same can be seen at the "Zero Mile" marker in the city.

Travel within city


Travelling around the city of Nagpur is quite easy with several options available for tourists. Tourists can travel around the city of Nagpur by auto rickshaws, rented cars or public transport (buses).

Bus
Buses are the best way to travel around the city of Nagpur as they are easily available and ply to almost every corner of the city. The city bus routes have been so planned that they cover almost all portions of the city that people normally travel to. Bus fares are quite cheap too, ranging within Rs 5 to 15. Talk to the locals in order to know your bus route, the friendly people of Nagpur will be happy to help.

Auto Rickshaw
You can also opt for auto rickshaws in order to reach your destination in a convenient & quick manner. Auto rickshaws in Nagpur run on meter and the basic fair is Rs 15 for the first two kilometers and 8 INR for every additional kilometer travelled. Auto rickshaws can make your commute easier, and these can be a safe mode of travel during night time. There are no separate night fares.

Taxi

Dhamma Chakra Stupa, also known as Diksha Bhumi, is an important religious Buddhist monument located at Nagpur. It is at this place in 1956 Dr B R Ambedkar initiated the conversion of thousands of Dalit people to Buddhism. This day is celebrated as Ashok Vijaya Dashmi and on this day thousands of followers of Dr Ambedkar and Buddism join this place to offer floral tributes. The stupa is worth seeing due to its architectural beauty. It can accommodate more than 5,000 people. The stupa is made out of Dhaulpur sandstones, marbles and granites. The attractive dome has a height of 120 feet.
