New 2014 utility rates will still be among the lowest in the state
City Information
Some Longmont utility rates are scheduled to increase next year, and the new residential rates are listed below. Many of these increases were scheduled years before the September flood, but some are being instituted to help pay for repair and replacement of infrastructure damaged in that flood. Current Effective Dec 1, 2013 Storm drainage user charge: $7.77/month $13.05/month (increase for flood-related construction) Current Effective Jan 1, 2014 Sanitation rate: 96-gallon container- $12.68/month $14.14/month 48-gallon container - $ 8.97/month $ 9.65/month Parks and greenway maintenance fee: $1/month $4/month ($2 through 2016 is for flood-related construction) Sewer rate: Service fee $8.50/month $9.50/month Volume fee $3.46/1,000 gal $ 4.11/1,000 gal Volume fee is gallons per month The City also is considering electric rate adjustments for 2014. The proposed changes include an average electric rate increase of 5 percent in 2014 that is expected to remain in effect, with no additional increases, through 2016. Proposed electric rates will be presented to the city council for first reading on November 12 and second reading on December 17. It is important to note that even with this proposed increase, Longmonts electric rates for all customer classes will remain among the lowest in Colorado. In fact, Longmont residential rates would need to increase approximately 50 percent to reach the state average.
A 20-minute video produced by the City of Longmont and the Longmont Channel that highlights the damage caused by the September flood is available online at www.ci.longmont.co.us/ news/pr/2013/floodvideo.htm Hosted by Longmont Public Works and Natural Resources Director, Dale Rademacher, and Longmont Police Commander Jeff Satur, the video takes a deeper look at areas that the average resident cannot see or find. Many areas around the City are fenced off for safety reasons and the public cannot access. The video provides an eye-opening and revealing view of washed out bridges, destroyed trails, aerial footage of flood waters and a summation of the cost and time needed to repair all the flood damage. What took the City of Longmont 20 years to build, mother nature destroyed in one day, Rademacher says at one point in the video. Longmont estimates that the flood caused about $148 million in total damages and Rademacher provides a comprehensive tour along the St. Vrain River and Lefthand Creek. An overview of Longmont flood recovery is available online at www.ci.longmont.co.us/flood-info/index.htm.

Every year from April through August, the City of Longmont tests the outdoor emergency warning system the first Monday of each month at 10 am. Other than for testing, the system will be used only to notify the community when action should be taken. The sirens are for OUTDOOR warnings, although you might hear a nearby siren indoors. If you hear the siren and it isnt 10 am on the first Monday of the month, you should immediately seek shelter inside and tune to a local television or radio station to learn more about the nature of the emergency. Comcast channel 8 and radio station KOA 850- AM are good choices. Please DO NOT CALL 911 when you hear the siren unless you have a real emergency. It is critical to keep the 911 lines open for people who require immediate assistance. Residents are encouraged to use battery-operated weather radios that activate automatically during severe weather. For more information, contact the City of Longmont Office of Emergency Management at 303-651-8438 or email donna.platt@ ci.longmont.co.us.
If you cant easily walk to your meter from the street or alley, your meter reader cant either. When you keep a path to your meter clear, it helps the reader more quickly and easily obtain an actual read, which keeps bills accurate and costs low. If you have questions about keeping meter reading areas cleared or obtaining automated meter reading equipment, call Longmont Power & Communications at 303-651-8386.

Congratulations! As part of the November 5, 2013, election, Longmonts voters approved funding for the full development of the Citys broadband services network making Longmont Colorados first gigabit city. Plans for a full deployment of broadband services, including high speed Internet, to City businesses and residents are now underway. Prior to the start of construction, the selection of the vendor to conduct design and engineering services for the Citys broadband system will need to occur. Revenue bonds to fund the system build-out will be issued and materials for construction purchased. These steps will be completed as quickly as possible. Construction will occur in phases and it is anticipated that it will take approximately 3 years to be completed. Updated information regarding the progress of construction and estimated service availability dates will be posted on the LPC website as it becomes available. Beginning in early 2014, look for information on how residents and businesses alike will be able to pre-register for services. The City of Longmont is excited for the opportunity to offer broadband services for businesses and residents. Stay tuned for notifications regarding sign up and connection capabilities as they become available. For ongoing updates about the development of Longmonts broadband services, visit http://www.ci.longmont. co.us/lpc/TC/index.htm and stay alert for announcements through traditional and online media channels.

Julia Ann Dunbar Coffin, the matriarch of Sandstone Ranch, was born on Dec 2, 1844, in Otsego County, New York. Three days after Christmas 1865, on Dec 28 at her home in DeKalb, Illinois, Julia, barely 21 years old, married Morse H. Coffin. Together the newlyweds set off west in the spring of 1866 on an adventurous journey by train and wagon across the Great Plains through Indian lands to Morses homestead in Colorado Territory.
How to Get to Sandstone Ranch Visitors Center Sandstone Ranch Visitors Center is located just east of Longmont on Highway 119. The turn-off for the District Park and Visitors Center is one mile east of the Intersection of Highway 119 and Weld County Road 1. Drive south on Sandstone Drive (next to the football and soccer fields) and follow the directional signs to the Visitors Center/ Trailhead parking lot. Follow the walking trail down to the Visitors Center. Handicapped parking is available in front of the Visitors Center.
In a log cabin nestled near sandstone cliffs on the St. Vrain River, Julia gave birth to their first child, a girl, Geneva, on Oct 21, 1866. Family reasons were credited for Julias return to her home in DeKalb in April of 1868. But perhaps the hardships of pioneer living and the continuing presence of marauding Indians made her want to return to more safe and familiar surroundings. In August she bore a son, Merton, and by November, Morse arrived to reunite with his growing family. They were listed on the 1870 census as citizens of DeKalb, Il, though by 1872 the Coffins returned to stay in Colorado. Two more sons, Adelbert Byron in 1874 and Morse Harry in 1877 were born at the Sandstone homestead. Her last child, another girl, Julia Etta, born in September of 1883 completed the family at about the same time the main house was built. Her husband Morse would later write - Up to this time Mrs. Coffin thinks she has had her share of pioneering but she has stood it well and done her full share toward building up the home. Visit online for more information about the history of Sandstone Ranch Visitors Center.
