Review Mageia 3

Mageia merupakan turunan dari Linux Mandriva yang dibuat pada bulan September 2010 mantan karyawan dan contributor dari pendistribusi linux di Perancis. Tidak seperti Mandriva yang dibentuk sebagai produk comersial, project Mageia ini merupakan project bagi public dan merupakan organisasi yang tanpa melihat keuntungan serta memiliki tujuan mengembangkan sebuah Sistem Operasi Linux secara gratis.

Mageia ini sudah release sampai versi ke 4, namun versi ke-4 ini masih dalam tahap pengembangan dalam bentuk Alpha Edition. Untuk Mageia 3 sendiri sudah release sejak tanggal 19 Mei 2013 dan di release secara gratis. Untuk Mageia 3 bisa di download disini http://mirrors.mageia.org/ . Di Mageia 3 ini menawarkan beberapa jenis desktop termasuk KDE, LXDE, XFCE, Razor-Qt dan GNOME.

Kebutuhn system minimal untuk Mageia 3 : Processor yang support AMD, Intel dan VIA Memory RAM 512 minimal , tapi di sarankan 2Gb Storage 1 GB dengan instalasi setup yang minimal dan 6Gb dengan full setup instalasi Graphic card: any ATI, Intel, Matrox, nVidia, SiS or VIA graphic card

Installation Instalasi Mageia 3 lumayan mudah, karena merupakan turunan dari Linux Mandriva , Instalasi Mageia 3 ini sudah berbentuk graphical. Untuk packagenya juga sudah lumayan lengkap pada saat instalasi awal.

Cara Instalasi : Pertama masuk ke dalam booting mageia untuk memulai instalasi

Next , kita setting bahasa yang ingin digunakan, untuk mageia 3 ini sudah ada bahasa Indonesianya.

Selanjutnya kita masuk ke dalam bagian lisensi dari mageia 3, pilih saja terima lalu masuk ke dalam bagian untuk mempartisi.

Disini ada 2 cara untuk mempartisi hardisk, yaitu dengan menggunakan semua ruang bebas yang ada di hardisk dengan settingan partisi dari mageia atau kita mengatur lagi partisi secara manual.

Disini saya membuat partisi menjadi 2 yaitu dengan ext4 dan swap memori.

Ukuran swap memori disini saya menggunakan 1 Gb dan sisanya untuk system filenya .

Jika sudah semua di setting , klik selesai .

Lalu masuk ke dalam pemilihan media lain untuk di configurasi. Jika tidak ada pilih saja next.

Selanjutnya pada saat akan menginstal kita harus memilih jenis tampilan desktop yang akan digunakan yaitu KDE atau GNOME, atau kita bisa mengcustome tampilan nya sendiri. Disini saya memilih KDE karena menurut saya lebih bagus dan simple menggunakan KDE.

Setelah memilih tampilan desktop, langsung saja install. Di mageia ini package dalam isonya sudah lumayan lengkap jadi untuk instalasi lumayan lama.

Ketika proses instalasi selesai, kita akan masuk pada bagian konfigurasi os nya , untuk pertama kita konfigurasi user akun yang akan kita gunakan. Seperti biasa , disini kita harus setting root dan user akun.

Untuk selanjutnya kita konfigurasi system mageianya mualai dari system sampai networking.

Selanjutnya tinggal pengaturan update saja , apakah kalian akan mengupdate package yg baru atau tidak. Dan selesai lah proses instalasi.

The Mageia 3 Desktop One thing I really liked about the Mageia KDE desktop is that it defaulted to the classic KDE menus. There are no sliding menus to be found when you boot into your KDE desktop. Ive always loathed the sliding menus, they just seem too inefficient to me compared to the classic ones.

Mageia 3 Menu.ping The Mageia 3 desktop is uncluttered with icons, and its quite easy to find your way around. Just click the blue button on the far left of the panel to access application menus, the software management tool, and the Mageia control center. Everything is laid out in a clear way so youll feel right at home even if youve never used Mageia before. You can also access system settings and the control center right from the panel, along with Firefox and the Dolphin file manager.

Quite a lot of bugs were squashed. Some notable features:

Installing kernels had been made safer. Harddrake will install ethernet/wireless packages when a new device is detected, which helps quite a lot for Broadcom devices. Mcc now finds NFS servers where it failed to do before in some environments. Bubble notifications were disabled in net_applet because of a segfault in GNOME's libnotify (mga#9102). Autologin is now supported with lxdm and slim too (#3715)

Journalctl is now used as default. You can still install rsyslog if you want logs on tty12 or syslog/user/access/messages logs. draklog has not been modified to deal with journalctl so you will need to have rsyslog installed to use it. Grub2 is now available for the first time in Mageia and may be selected during installation or later using: Mageia Control Center -> Boot. To test grub2 while still using grub legacy please see /usr/share/doc/grub2/README.Mageia
