Moffitt Cancer Center located in Tampa, Florida, is the third-busiest by-volume cancer center in the U.S. From research to diagnosis, treatment to survivorship, Moffitt is focused solely on the prevention and cure of cancer.
Their vision to transform cancer care through service, science and partnership is embodied through every aspect of their institution, even to the AV technology they use, which explains why Moffitt was one of the first institutions in the country to furnish their tumor boards, radiology locations and conference rooms with the most cutting-edge laser technology. And the laser projector brand that delivered those high-quality, high-contrast radiology images was Sony.

cancer center in the U.S. From research to diagnosis, treatment to survivorship, Moftt is focused solely on the prevention and cure of cancer. Their vision to transform cancer care through service, science and partnership is embodied through every aspect of their institution, even to the AV technology they use, which explains why Moftt was one of the rst institutions in the country to furnish their tumor boards, radiology locations and conference rooms with the most cutting-edge laser technology. And the laser projector brand that delivered those high-quality, high-contrast radiology images was Sony. The Search Their projector quest, however, didnt originate with laser. The lamp-based projectors they had in place were producing low-contrast images that didnt meet the standards of their radiologists. Their extensive search began for lamp- based projectors that would provide the image quality the radiologists demanded at a price point the institution could afford. After six months into the search, Jake Gilray, account manager for AVI-SPL, the systems integrator for Moftt, brought in Sony Electronics to demo their lamp projectors. Moftt not only purchased three projectors right away but also started the process of swapping out all their lamp-based projectors for Sony projectors. We brought in a couple of doctors for the demo, said John Maass, AV manager for Moftt. They were overwhelmed by the showcasing of the Customer: Moftt Cancer Center Industry: Healthcare Challenges: Provide a projector that would produce radiology images with the high contrast and color denition needed for case review and discussion Find an economical solution for numerous meeting spaces Reduce the maintenance and labor costs needed to keep over 100 meeting spaces running without interruption Use technology that would be more time-efcient for the medical staff Solution: Replace current projectors with VPL-FHZ55 Sony laser projectors in high-use and off-site meeting spaces Benets: Delivered the vivid color and high-contrast images that the radiology team required and was also equipped with DICOM GSDF Simulation Gamma mode Provided cutting-edge technology that resulted in less wait- and down-time for the doctors Eliminated lamp replacement costs and reduced overall maintenance and labor time Was an affordable solution with an immediate return on investment Supported the mission of the institution from a technology aspect case study Sony Laser Technology Projects the Mission for Moftt Cancer Center next The great part about this laser projector or any of the Sony projectors is we trust them, we know theyre going to work.
John Maass, AV Manager, Moftt Cancer Center case study next product, and I was overwhelmed by the affordable price point, he added. The Laser WOW Factor Shortly after, Maass attended InfoComm where Sony premiered their game- changing new VPL-FHZ55 laser projector that upstaged them all. We had been looking at laser projectors for a whilebut when we saw your product, we said, Wow, its got everything weve talked about: its got DICOM GSDF Simulation Gamma mode, image contrast plus the vivid colors, which are phenomenal, explained Maass. When I saw this projector at InfoComm, I just said, We have to have this. Because as soon as they [the radiologists] realize the capabilities and how great this is, theyre all going to want it. We love the rst ten, so were ordering more! An interesting note is that several of Moftts high level VPs happen to be color-blind for specic colors. When they demonstrate contrasts on slides or graphs, they prefer bright colors that make items really pop, which their previous projectors couldnt achieve because they didnt have the proper color scale. When they saw the vivid color coming off the Sony laser projectors, they were blown away, said Maass. While Moftt has 25-30 Sony lamp-based projectors of various models throughout their facility, they are placing the laser ones in the high-use and off-site locations. This resulted in saving time for their doctors, which can help save lives. For example, a laser projector turns on and off instantly with no delay, while a lamp-based projector takes a few minutes to cool down and come back up. A few minutes means that doctors are not talking about patients, which means theyre wasting their time, which impacts the next level of care, said Maass. So the laser projectors instant on/ off feature is incredible, he added. Maass pointed out that saving doctors a few When the doctors saw the vivid color coming off the Sony laser projectors, they were blown away.
John Maass, AV Manager, Moftt Cancer Center With 20,000 hours of laser life, putting these projectors in Moftts remote locations will reduce the need to have to go there for maintenance and support.

Thats a huge amount of time lost that should be dedicated to the patient focus, he explained. Gilray found the projector effective not only from the doctors point of view, but also from reduction in maintenance time and costs, which led him to propose the projector to Moftt. Moftt has over 100 conference spaces with only four people servicing them, and I have seen the challenges Moftt has encountered to keep them all running without interruption. With 20,000 hours of laser projector life and no lamps to replace, that is no longer an issue. Especially putting these projectors in Moftts remote locations will reduce the need to have to go there for maintenance and support, said Gilray. From an integration standpoint, since many of the conference rooms were equipped with Sony lamp-based projectors with the same body size and type, the laser projectors were also easy to install. We didnt have to relocate the mounting, said Gilray. So it was just a pretty easy swap. That parts been super- simple, he added. What Is the Professional Medical Opinion? When asked about the doctors reactions to the laser projectors performance, Maass replied, Theres one word that comes to mind quite often. Its usually Wow! Theres usually shock over how quickly it turned on, or theyre talking about the color, said Maass. The other thing we love is the lumen output its at a perfect next The other thing we love is the lumen output its at a perfect point for our medium- sized conference spaces.

Moftts medical staff use the laser projectors primarily for review in a tumor board setting after the patient diagnosis has been made, as well as in an educational setting for training fellows and residents. In a group setting is where they need to be able to see that contrast, said Maass. So having a projector with DICOM GSDF Simulated Gamma mode, where they can see [what youre talking about], makes all the difference. When it comes to Sony projectors, Maass is a true believer. Weve got the backing of this great electronics company thats going to really push it, said Maass. Im a big fan of a company that decides to get into something in a big way, because thats an opportunity for us to get involved at the ground level and be a part of something great. Not only because we know were going to get the proper support from Sony. When Im excited about a product, you cant shut me up about it. Were one of the rst in the country to have these laser projectorshow great is that? he said. Maass said it all comes down to Sonys state of the art technology. Moftt is all about being on the cutting edge, the bleeding edge of everything, he stated. And its all driven toward our mission for contributing to the prevention and cure of cancer. Throughout the institution, from department to department, we all take that mission and embody it and move forward with it. Its our way of giving back to the community. If we can use technology that will save a doctor ve minutes in a meeting so that he can talk about another patient, thats another life thats gotten extra support that they may not have gotten a year ago. So thats huge, he added. Maass is looking forward to the future of laser technology and where its going. The great part about this laser projector or any of the Sony projectors is we trust them, we know theyre going to work, said Maass. And that was one of the great selling features for Sony, he added.
