Gas Compression

Given a constant temperature, the pressure of air in the syringe will vary inversely with its volume; this relationship is also known as Boyles Law. Now what do you do? 1. Open ChemLab and select Gas Compression when prompted. 2. Follow the Procedure as outlined in ChemLab. 3. Perform the lab, collecting the indicated data as noted in the observations section (create your own data table within your lab report collecting the specific data from this list). 4. Perform the various calculations with your collected data as listed in the labs observations section and your graph of collected data (Pressure vs. Temperature) should be done in MS Excel as a x-y scatter plot and include the equation of the line via a trendline. Do one graph with the pressure unit of kPa and the volume unit of mL (milliliters) and a second graph with the pressure unit of atm and the volume unit of L (liters). 5. Write a lab report of the lab within MS Word.

Introduction: Gas Compression In this experiment, the plunger of a 60-mL syringe will be depressed four times and the resulting pressure measured. Assume that on the day of the experiment, the atmospheric pressure read as 98 kPa. In your observations, each pressure measurement is the sum of the value shown on the gauge plus the atmospheric pressure. Given a constant temperature, the pressure of air in the syringe will vary inversely with its volume; this relationship is also known as Boyles Law: P1V1 = P2V2 Procedure: Step 1: Obtain a 60ml Syringe with Gauge from the Gas Syringe item under the Equipment menu. Use the Initial Gas Syringe Volume dialog box to set the initial Syringe Volume to 50 ml. Record the resulting pressure in the Observations.

Gouge reads 0 kPa

Step 2: Select the syringe and then select the Set Gas Syringe Volume dialog box from under the Procedures menu or from the right-mouse button context menu. Reduce the Syringe Volume by 10 ml. This procedure depresses the plunger. Record the resulting pressure in the Observations.

Gauge reads 280 kPa,

Step 3: Repeat "Step 2" two more times. Gauge reads 280 kPa, Gauge reads 280 kPa

Observations: You will draw a graph of your results placing volume [V] on the vertical axis and pressure [P] on the horizontal. Write the data you collected in the following blank (___) spaces. Assume the barometric reading (air pressure) on the day of the experiment was 98 kPa. Air Pressure (kPa) 98 98 Gauge Pressure (kPa) 0 kPa 280 kPa 280 kPa 280 kPa
