World War Bank - Jackson and his followers despised the monopolistic and despotic National Bank.

- Nicholas Biddle: President of the national bank, and held massive amounts of power over the monopoly. - Bank War erupted in 1832 when Daniel Webster and Henry Clay proposed a bill to congress to renew the banks charter. Clay figured that if Jackson vetoed, he would lose next election, and if he signed it then he would lose his Western followers. - Jackson acted as though the executive branch was more powerful than the judicial by calling the bank unconstitutional.

The Corrupt Bargain - There were four candidates: Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, William H. Crawford, and John Q. Adams. - Jackson got the most votes, but not a majority. The election went to the House and it was Jackson vs. John Q. Adams. Adams won. - Adams later chose Henry Clay to be Secretary of State. The ordeal was called the "Corrupt Bargain." - Jacksons supporters claimed the politicians (Henry Clay, speaker of house, and J. Q. Adams) had made a deal.

Adams Sucks! - John Quincy Adams was a puritanical Yankee. As president, he was very able but lacked the peoples support. - Adams stubbornly was stubborn and only removed 12 people during his presidency, frustrating workers who wanted jobs. - Adams urged congress to build roads and canals, a national university, and a national observatory. - After he pushed against popular demand, Adams had the South and the West against him.

WE WANT JACSKON! - Immediately after the corrupt bargain, Andrew Jacksons followers started campaigning for 1828. The nation split between the national Republicans (Adams) and the Democratic Republicans (Jackson). - Jacksonians stated that John Q. Adams was dishonest and corrupt, and the Adams supporters stated that Jackson was devilish and crude. They also said some Yo Mama jokes and called his wife an adulteress. - Jackson won easily, 178 to 83 in the electoral vote. - West and South = Jackson, the North = Adams.

WE WANT JACSKON! (Cont.) - Jackson was adored by his followers and was known as the peoples man. - He believed that the executive branch should obtain mass amounts of power. - He was kind of radical, showdowns and bullet wounds for life. - Spoils System: it gave political party members jobs in government just because of their political party belonging.

The Abominable Snowman - Tariff of 1828 (Tariff of Abominations): in 1824, congress had increased the General Tariff to insane amounts, creating tension between sections of the country, - Southerners hated it because they felt that the tariff discriminated against them. - However, southerners were angrier about the slavery issue. 1822, Denmark Vesey led a slave rebellion in Charleston. It scared the white society as to what may happen if there were revolts. - SC Exposition: John C. Calhoun, states that states cold nullify the tariff.

Trail of Tears - One of Jacksons most important characteristics is the drive for westward expansion. However, this meant confrontation with Indians. - In the 1780s there was a lot of energy expended into converting or purifying the Indians, thus the Society of Propagating the Gospel Among Indians was founded in 1787. - In 1830, congress created the Indian Removal Act to force the five major Indian tribes out of the western territory. (Cherokees, Creeks, cho0ctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles) - The trail of tears refers to the forced movement of about 15,000 Cherokee Indians from their home territories.
