DOING NOTHING
A farmer once left his two sons in charge for the day with full instructions on the work they had to do. On his return he saw the tasks undone so he asked What have you been doing, Jeremy?. Nothing, Sir replied Jeremy. Well, Daniel, what have you been doing?. Ive been helping Jeremy, Sir. Now Im sure we all have moments when doing nothing feels like an attractive option. But generally we dont confuse this with having a rest and I think we would all agree that in life its not really a good principle. Doing nothing gets short shrift in Biblical writings, too. We are told often that we need to be alert and ready like Noah, with his ark, or the maidens with spare oil for their lamps. This is a getting ready time of the year; getting ready for Christmas....or getting ready for frost and snow....or even getting ready for next years holiday. You will be aware that our churches are now in a time of vacancy, or Interregnum, following Bobs retirement. And you might be forgiven for thinking of this as a time of doing nothing. That would be a poor state of affairs. Indeed, in a sermon at St. Leonards some weeks before leaving us, Bob included a strong reminder that the leadership in a healthy church (as in any organisation) needs to be spread. We may be without THE leader but we must all play a part in leader-ship to ensure the Christian faith is lived out among us. If youve never considered yourself a leader dont wait to throw a six, start right away. Take a share now, during the period leading up to the coming of a new leader. Coming, of course, is what Advent means - the time of getting ready for the coming of Jesus as the babe of Bethlehem, of course, but also the coming of Christ at the end of time. By and large, we wont be leaving it until Christmas Day to get ready for Christmas. And the Christian message exhorts us not to leave it until the last minute to give some thought to what happens when we die. And earlier I hoped we would not sit back and do nothing until the new leader comes. There is much work to do to get ready for all of these. Lets be very clear about when to do it. Today. The best way to plan for the future is to create it. The only way to secure the future is to care about the present. Sammie

I must apologise that, for the first time since 1998, some homes were not offered poppies. A considerable number of my regular collectors were unable to help and Ive had no success from requests for new people to join our team. Inevitably, our Village Total has also gone down for the first time.

The Legion currently needs 1.6million per week for welfare work Please consider offering your help next year. - Tel. 880075
As ever, a huge Thankyou to my present collectors & counters and to all Local Businesses for their continued support.

Thoughts and prayers for Advent, Christmas and the New Year
Psalm 88 verses 6-9

You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape; my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you . The NIV Bible Prayer for the Month. Lord Jesus Christ, born an outcast and refugee, in weakness and frailty, as we rejoice in our celebration of your coming into our world, hear our prayers for all those who have no cause for celebration. We pray especially for the people of the Philippines still suffering from the aftermath of the recent very severe tropical storms. We pray for the hungry and the homeless , those who lost everything and are without shelter, food and water, all whose lives have been shattered by tragedy and disaster. Lord Jesus Christ born to set your people free, bring comfort where there is sorrow and hope where there is despair. Reach out to all who face such situations. Grant the assurance that you care, courage to believe in the future and strength to cope with the present. Living Lord Jesus come again to your world this Christmas time, through your word , through your spirit, your people and in the living presence of Christ and so may the message of the Gospel truly be good news for all people. Through Jesus Christ our Lord Amen Prayer Points for December/January Pray for the people of the Philippines who may still be homeless and those without food or water or shelter this Christmas that the world will not forget them. Pray for safe journeys as people travel to be with their families. Pray for those who could be alone at Christmas that their need of fellowship and friendship will be recognised by those around them. Give thanks for the joy of the Christmas message Pray for the world so full of anxieties and worries, uncertain of the future and unsure of the way forward Pray that the New Year will see an end to the bitterness and fighting in Syria and Afghanistan and be a time of new beginnings. Pray that the New Year will bring re-assurance to those full of anxiety about what the future will mean for them

Merry Christmas from the village Postman

Lee Graham, our village postman wishes everyone a happy Christmas. He will be away for a while but will be back in the New Year as soon as his cancer treatment is successfully completed. We all wish him well and hope it will not be too long before we see him running in with our post again.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at Sherfield Village Hall at 7:45pm There will be no talk on Monday 16th December. Instead we have our Christmas party. Always a fun event with a light hearted quiz, nibbles and possibly a glass of wine or two. Contact: Linda on 882341 or Vanessa on 881760 The Womens Institute Reported by Ilene Iles Our President, Dee Bulpitt, opened the November Meeting and welcomed everyone, with a special mention to a visitor Patricia Dennison. The usual Business Meeting took place, reports were given and Dee reminded those present that it is very important that subscriptions are paid in January or February at the latest as there would be repercussions should a claim be made on W.I. Insurance. Everyone enjoyed the trip to the Mary Rose Museum once again, we were very lucky with the weather! Val asked for suggestions for our spring trip. Dee then advised everyone that we will not be able to have our Annual Lunch on the second Wednesday in February as BCOT are closing on Wednesdays but Helen has provisionally booked for the second Thursday. It was also proposed and passed that we will NOT have a Meeting in February. COOKERY COMPETITION Competitors brought their entries to the Hall in the morning for judging. Dee remarked that it was a wonderful effort with 48 entries over 11 classes. The judge thought the standard was quite high. Best in Show winner Margaret Lee, Stoney Creek Sentinel Cup for Highest Marks winner Tess Morris. The Business Meeting closed at 3.20 p.m. Tea followed and the raffle was drawn. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 4TH DECEMBER 2013-2 P.M. CHRISTMAS MEETING WITH BRAMLEY SCHOOL CHOIR

Falklands War Veteran Recounts Terrifying 100 Days

Steve Carter moved to Stratfield Saye last year and has recently published a book based on his naval experiences. April 1982. Argentina invades the Falkland Islands. Young British soldiers, sailors and airmen are sent 8,000 miles to the bottom of the world. Their orders; liberate the islands and return them to the people who live there. Amongst them was 22 year-old Steve Carter, a Leading Weapons Engineer Mechanic (Radio) on board the Royal Navy ship HMS Fearless. Mr Carters book, 100 Days, recounts the terrifying experience of conflict and the true story of the battle in which over 200 of his fellow British servicemen perished. The book is semi auto-biographical and Mr Carter recounts his own experiences through the character Chris Carpenter. Everything that happens to Chris on the Fearless is derived from my own memories, explains Mr Carter. Stories and anecdotes that are mentioned elsewhere in the book are also taken from my memories of the 12 years I spent in the Royal Navy. This then is a story about the young men who fought in 1982, intertwined with my own actual experience of that time. Remarkably, Mr Carter dismissed his original intention to write his account of the Falklands War on a purely auto -biographical basis, fearing that his tale would seem quite boring. Given that his real -life experiences include being under continuous air attack from Argentine planes and losing friends when their ship was hit and sunk in a missile attack, this could hardly be considered boring. However, Mr Carter continues, in order to tell my story in a way that hopefully interests the reader, I decided to create an additional fictional ship and some fictional characters to enable me to write what is in fact a novel. True story or novel, 100 Days is a heartfelt tale of bravery and loss underlined by the strong sense of comradeship. 100 Days is published by Authors Online and available in ebook and paperback formats from authorsonline.co.uk; amazon.co.uk, amazon.com. ISBN13: 9780755215997.

Stratfield Turgis Autumn Walk report

An intrepid band met up at Stratfield Turgis Recreation ground for the Autumn 2013 Village Walk. As well as organising a lovely route Sue Penney had booked some beautiful weather. The walk took us on footpaths to the Loddon. And then along the banks of the Loddon with access to areas normally closed to the public. Back past the historic All Saints church and to civilisation. A wonderful route and a lovely couple of hours spent in good company. Make sure you dont miss the next one.

Filling an awfully big pair of shoes

Having a say in the appointment of our new priest in charge Its not that long since we waved goodbye to Bob Politt as he headed off to retirement in Cambridge with Rody and already the work has begun to prepare the ground for the arrival of his successor. On November 9th some forty members of the churches across the newly created benefice of Sherfield-onLoddon, Stratfield Saye, Hartley Wespall with Stratfield Turgis & Bramley met to make their contribution to the Benefice Profile, Role Description and Person Specification three documents that will be important in the appointment process for our new priest in charge. Chris Blakeley and Karen West, two members of St. Leonards, guided everyone through four exercises to answer the following questions about the present and the future:

What are the distinctive strengths of the churches in our benefice?

Of these, what are the top three?

What 4 priorities should our new priest in charge be addressing for

us, as current church members?

On behalf of those members of our local community and

elsewhere who are not here today, what Id really love you to be doing for me is The top four priorities for gifts and skills that our new priest in charge should offer Each question generated much lively discussion and many ideas as someone commented on the day, Bobs left awfully big shoes to be filled!
Page 30

Those tasked with the role of making the new appointment are confident that they can take the information gathered on the day, together with other views already contributed to put together an attractive picture for potential applicants of a benefice that has committed members, with strengths that come from tradition but which is open to change and growth; and that worships in beautiful buildings. Many of us spoke of the importance of our new priest in charge being active in the local community, as well as those of us of all ages already in our churches; as someone who can work well with lay and other ordained leaders in the team and a very long list of other ideas too long to summarise here. Our list of gifts and skills was also rather daunting the most popular of which included an active and caring pastor in the community, visible in all parts of the benefice; having a heart for the Gospel in todays culture and able to work enthusiastically across all generations. Over coming months the appointments process will be seeking to measure three essential Cs applicants calling, competence and the chemistry between them and us. Theres a long way to go yet before we can announce the name of our new priest -in-charge, but for the moment its not too late to have YOUR say ahead of the drafting of the Benefice Profile, Role Description and Person Specification, contact any of the Church Wardens or editor of the magazine for details of how to do this.

THANKS TO VOLUNTEERS
The management committee is very grateful to all the volunteers who give so much time and effort organising and running fund raising events for the village hall. Special thanks go to Natalie Larner for all her hard work, especially in selling tickets for events.

VIMALA & THE BAKER BOYS

On Friday 8th November the village hall was transported back to the 1940s as a night club with mood lighting and music ranging from smoochy ballads to up-tempo swing numbers, all led by Vimala, a truly amazing female vocalist with an incredible range in both pitch and volume. A great evening with lots of dancing, the only complaint was that it had to come to an end! Another successful fund raising event sponsored by Hampshire County Councils Hog the Limelight.

Update from Sherfield -on-Loddon Parish Council Neighbourhood Plan Neighbourhood planning is a new way for communities to decide the future of the places where they live and work. It enables local communities to have some control over the style and location of new houses, businesses, shops and community facilities in their local area. We are in the process of creating a Neighbourhood Plan, (meetings take place on the 3 rd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm in the Village Hall), and we need more public involvement, so if you are resident in either Taylors Farm, Sherfield village or the hamlets of Church End or Wildmoor, and would like to have a say in the future of your community please come along to the meetings. If you would like more information about what is involved then please contact the Clerk. Meeting dates The next Full Parish Council meeting dates are 11th December 2013 and 15th January 2014 at 7.30pm in the Liddell Room. New Street Trading Consent Application The Parish Council has been consulted regarding a mobile fish and chip van in the car park at the Community Centre on Wednesday evenings for a 3 month trial period, and has decided to support this application. Jubilee Oak Having recently planted the commemorative Jubilee Oak tree, the Parish Council has agreed to commission a circular oak seat to surround it. This will also be used as a memorial seat so that residents can arrange to place plaques in memory of loved ones on the back of the seat. Half of the cost for this has already been met from donations or grants. Tree damage The Parish Council is aware of wind and rain damage to various trees within the Village and has made arrangements to address it. Karen Ross - Clerk to the Parish Council, Sherfield-on-Loddon, PO Box 6862, Basingstoke, RG24 4QZ Telephone: 01256 842662 Email: clerk@sherfieldonloddon-pc.gov.uk

Relate North and East Hampshire & Borders guide to avoiding arguments this Christmas. The charity is calling on everyone to put relationship maintenance on their to do list this festive season. Relate counsellor Judy said: We all want to have a happy, relaxing Christmas with our families, but in reality it can be a stressful time. Common causes of arguments range from money issues over buying presents, to deciding where to spend Christmas and whos cooking the dinner. Here are Relate NEHABs tips for keeping the peace this Christmas:

Plan ahead. Christmas can be stressful so avoid arguments by planning ahead. In

particular, talk to your partner in advance about where you plan to spend Christmas so its not a shock to anyone come Christmas Eve.

Dont overspend. For a lot of people this Christmas money will be tight, so try not
to succumb to the pressure and spend more than you can afford. Money worries put huge strain on relationships its not worth it in the long run.

Think of the kids. Who goes where and when can be a huge issue for parents
who have split up and for step families. As hard as it is, try and keep as calm as possible and keep your childrens best interests at heart.. Talk to your children.

Plan something special. Have a few special events that everyone knows about so
you have things to look forward to. It might be decorating the tree, or hanging the stockings up. The important thing is that you agree that these things will go ahead, and everyone makes the effort to get along.

Give yourself space. Christmas can be hectic, and tensions can rise quickly, so
plan in a little time when you can be alone to gather your thoughts.

Think of others. Remember family members or friends who might be alone, or

who find the festive period difficult. Just popping in, dropping them a card, or giving them a call can really help.

Delegate. Share out tasks amongst your family and guests and make a plan of all
the chores. The kids might not like it at first, but it will ensure you dont get to the end of the festive season feeling like a nervous wreck!

Go easy on the booze. We all like to toast Christmas with a nice glass or two, but
if there is any tension in your family then steer clear of too much alcohol, it will only aggravate the situation.

Have fun! Dont forget, its supposed to be fun. Remember its more important to
have a good time together than to make sure everything is 100% perfect. Relates free Arguments Check-Up is an online questionnaire which helps people to find out about their own arguing style and their compatibility with other arguing styles. Visit www.relate.org.uk/argument-check-up

As Deputy Leader of the Council, Ive continued to drive forward the regeneration of Basingstoke. As you may have seen over the summer, I've worked to bring Waitrose and John Lewis to our town and, at the end of September, I turned the first sod for a new Network Rail development at Basing View. This new centre will control all of the signalling for South West Trains and will provide training to Network Rail staff from across the country excellent news for our local economy. This helps us make the case that Basingstoke is a good place to base a business, which, in turn, gives us the ability to call for greater infrastructure investment. This is exactly what I did at Conservative Party Conference at the beginning of October. I made the point that no significant development should come without real infrastructure improvements. I also suggested that areas that are positioning themselves for economic growth should be able to get infrastructure improvements up front. These points were well-received but we shall have to see what is possible, especially on the latter, in a world where there is not much money around! A first step was the creation of New Homes Bonus, where HM Government said that the parts of the country that had had new houses built should have additional funding to, amongst other things, pay for infrastructure. The Borough of Basingstoke and Deane has built a significant number of new houses, so we have accrued some of this funding. It has been my mission to ensure that some of this is spent in the communities like ours that have actually experienced the effects of more housing, and I am pleased to say that I have been successful in doing this. Despite some opposition from Labour and Independent Councillors, the Council agreed to my report and recommendation that a Local Infrastructure Fund should be set up here in Basingstoke and Deane. This means that Bramley and Sherfield, alongside Basingstoke and other parts of the Borough that have experienced development, will, in the near future, be able to secure funding for small infrastructure improvements. A separate fund has also been ring fenced for Borough wide improvements such as forthcoming changes to M3 Junction 6. More details to follow in due course! As ever, if I can assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me. ranil@nehc.org.uk | 01256 636500 | Twitter: @CllrRanil

November Gardening Tips

1. Heap your leaves into an informal winter shelter for creepy crawlies, or put them in wire bins where they will slowly rot, forming an ideal potting compost. 2. Some bees and butterflies may still emerge during winter, so make sure theres nectar about, from plants such as winter flowering honeysuckle, or autumn flowering cherry. 3. Plant raspberry canes now, choosing whether you want summer or autumn flowering plants. Either way, their flowers will help bees in spring and early summer and you will have delicious fruits later on. 4. Birds will welcome high energy food at this time of year - buy or make mixtures of suet and nuts, or suet and insects. 5. Take stock of your garden and plan ahead for the new year. Research shows that the more different land use features a garden has, the better it is for wildlife.

Update: Badger Vaccinations

The first phase of our vaccination programme was a huge success and we trapped and vaccinated our target number of badgers. In 2014, we aim to increase this programme, vaccinating 40 setts across 16 reserves, taking us one step closer to controlling bTB across Badger by Dr David Williams Hampshire. Results from the extended pilot badger cull in Somerset - out last month - confirm a complete failure to meet required targets and should lead the Government to abandon its culling policy. The Wildlife Trusts continue to call on the Government to drop badger culling from its proposed strategy to tackle bovine TB in England.

NWR Report December 2013 - Gill Fearon NWR recently took part in the national Telephone Treasure Trail quiz. Phone lines are open for two hours on a chosen evening, during which time we ring for clues and check answers having been given two to start us off. The key is to determine the theme early on and this year we identified capital cities as the theme. The clues are very cryptic and sometimes we struggle to finish, but this time we sailed through it, finishing early which gave us plenty of time afterwards for a chat over coffee and cake. To give an idea of the type of clues, our starter clue was: The little King of Skiffle was an educated man. The King of Skiffle is reckoned to be Lonnie Donegan, so little gave us Lon and a Don is an educated man, which gave us London. Further clues included, Heavy laundry, which was Washington and What Ramblers do, which was Rome. Our next meetings before the end of 2013 are A History of Underwear evening and our annual Christmas evening when we take food, sing, do silly quizzes and play silly games! We wish everyone a very happy Christmas! In January we will be having a Games Evening - board games that is! We'll also be planning our meetings for 2014.

Evergreens by May MacQueen Our chairperson began with the business part of the meeting by informing everyone of the arrangements for the Christmas party and the Christmas lunch. Our party is on Monday 2nd December and will be a Christmas buffet and entertainment and a Christmas raffle. The Christmas lunch is on the 9th December at the Four Horseshoes at 12.30pm. After the business part of the meeting our grey cells were tested with a general knowledge quiz and a cryptic chocolate quiz, which everyone enjoyed. The meeting finished with tea, biscuits and a raffle.
