W hy do so many health-conscious consumers nationwide take a tablespoon or two of fresh flaxseed oil
every day? Why do others add flaxseeds to their cooking?
Because of the way that it makes then feel!
There may not be a single nutritional supplement today that can surpass the level of protection against
cancer and other diseases as delivered by the combination of flaxseed oil and lignan precursors. It is most
unfortunate that so many people are truly missing out by failing to take advantage of this nutrition
powerhouse – Mother Earth’s richest and most-effective source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Seems as though most everyone has heard the good news about omega-3 fatty acids these days goes by
when omega-3s are not featured on the nightly news, in local newspapers, on radio and television programs, or
in health and nutrition magazines. Even many mainstream doctors are expounding on the virtues of omega-3
fatty acids to their patients, family, friends, and the news media. Most recently, the American Heart
Association even altered its healthy heart dietary guidelines to recommend that foods rich in omega-3 fatty
acids be consumed at least twice a week. And according to the World Health Organization, omega-3 fatty acids
are essential to optimal health and life.
Perhaps the moist exciting news on flax yet is in regard to breast cancer. A study of 120 women
revealed that those with the highest breast tissue levels of omega-3 fatty acids, found most abundantly in
flaxseed oil, had the lowest incidence of breast cancer. Further, of those that did develop the disease, they
showed the lowest probability of the cancer spreading to other organs, offering hope for women with an
existing breast tumor.
Equally important is the role that essential fatty acids found in flaxseed oil play in brain development.
Studies on rats and rhesus monkeys reveal that dietary restriction of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy and
lactation interferes with normal visual function and impairs learning ability in offspring, and may take the
brain more susceptible to the damaging effects of environmental toxins and alcohol. When school children in
Manitowac, Wisconsin were placed on a diet including flax, their teachers and parents reported improved
behavior, higher test scores, and better attendance.
Omega-3 fatty acids have traditionally been supplied in the diet by wild cold water ocean fish, nuts and seeds,
green leafy vegetables, sea vegetables, wild game living on green vegetation, and free-range livestock animals
grazing on green vegetation. Unfortunately, the advent of industrialized mass production and refining of food
has affected the delicate polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids such that they are either destroyed, transformed
to potentially toxic compounds, or deliberately removed to avoid spoilage and extend shelf life. The role of flax
oil and flaxseeds in the diet, therefore, has become even more important in these times of severe omega-3 fatty
acid deficiency.

Quite apart from flax’s omega-3 fatty acids, emerging scientific evidence has begun to focus on another healing
element found in the fibrous shell/hull of the flaxseed. Special phytochemical constituents have been isolated
in flaxseed that can be converted, after ingestion, to potent cancer-fighting and preventive compounds called
mammalian lignans.

coauthors of The Breast Cancer Prevention Program (Macmillan, 1998), who call flax a “profound” inhibitor of
breast cancer and other malignancies.

Wild fish and flaxseed provide different types of omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseed provides the omega-3 fatty
acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Some types of cold water fish prove two other kinds, eicosapentaenoic
acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA).
The alpha-linolenic acid in flaxseed is considered to be the seminal or parent compound of all omega-3
fatty acids since it can be converted to eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids.
However, sometimes this conversion in the human body is hampered by dietary practices, environmental
influences, even genetics. Both kinds of omega-3 fatty acids are important to human health. One is not
superior to the other. They are simply different, and you will want both oceanic and terrestrial sources of
omega-3 fatty acids in your daily fare.

Where do omega-3 fatty acids come from? The most fundamental source of omega-3 fatty acids is green
vegetation – the phytoplankton in the ocean and green leaves on land. The chloroplasts of plants provide
herbivorous animals with omega-3 fats that become concentrated in their cell membranes and fat tissue.
Carnivores eating animals nourished on green vegetations also tend to concentrate omega-3 fatty acids in their
tissues. For these reasons wild ocean fish, such as wild salmon, mackerel and trout, are excellent sources from
the sea. Wild herbivorous game (dear, moose, caribou), as well as livestock allowed to graze in grassy pastures
and not fattened on grain (corn), are also good sources from the land. Good land vegetable sources are walnuts
and flaxseeds. And the most abundant, economical, and thoroughly researched vegetable oil source is flaxseed
oil.
