Oral Radiography for Dental Assistants ORAD868

Proposal from LL/AD Enterprises, LLC July 2012

Course Description
This class is designed for dental assistants to become certified oral radiology technicians in the state of Maryland and to prepare the students for clinical practice. This class prepares the student to pass the Dental Assisting National Board examination, DANB. This course will cover: the nature of x-rays, interaction of x-rays with matter, radiation units, principles of the x-ray machine, biological effects of x-rays, principles of radiation protection, lowdose techniques, applicable radiation regulations, placement of radiographic film or sensors, darkroom and film processing, and film critique. This class consists of 26 online "classroom" hours.

Problem Analysis
Maryland law states all dental assistants be certified in Oral Radiography At this time only face-to-face classes exist Dentists upset with employees taking time off from work to attend class Employees unwilling to leave family and evening responsibilities for a face-to-face course

Course Objectives
Demonstrate exposing Bitewing, Periapical and Panoramic films Describe processing and mounting of films, and maintenance of the processor Discuss the use of ionizing radiation Identify diagnostic films/images and how to correct any errors Discuss legal and ethical issues Identify landmarks, shadows and artifacts

General Objectives
Students will make a video of themselves as the clinician placing the film holders in a patients mouth and post to Youtube and submit URL to assignment folder Students will use the interactive program to learn how to properly organize films/images into mounts Students will participate in case studies reviewing the amount of ionizing radiation a patient will receive Students will participate in reviewing films/images and discuss how to obtain a better diagnostic radiographic Students will submit a narrative on the legal and ethical issues concerning dental radiographs Students will take an exam where they will identify landmarks, shadows and artifacts and earn a 70% or better

Interactions
Ice breaking/welcoming activity-present a personal experience in the dental office as a patient Discussion threads Case studies as group assignments Synchronous session to review for the board examination-WebEx will be used

Assessments
Discussion threads Case studies Answers to chapter questions will be posted for grade in the assignment folder Development of a video from each student
