Summary

Corlin is a wealthy businessman, returns his sons school, Jeffrey, who died by drowning in the pool while training for school swimming tournament. He comes not only to clean up and bring Jeffreys stuff, he also find out what his son was really like. He is assured by the school's headmaster that Jeffrey was popular and amiable and that he delighted the school with his athletic prowess. But then Corlin is visited in Jeffrey's old room by one of his son's classmates, a somewhat shy and strange boy named Peter Cross. Peter tells Corlin that he has come to the room to reclaim a tennis racket which Jeffrey stole from him. Stunned by the accusation, Corlin demands to know more, and Peter's story is both shocking and bizarre. If what Peter is saying is true, Jeffrey was something of a monster that terrorized the entire school. At first Corlin does not believe Peter, though gradually the realization the story may be true has a shattering effect on him. Peter then leaves, but comes back a few moments later to tell Corlin bluntly that he made up the entire story, that he just wanted Jeffrey's tennis racket.

ANALYSIS

The Characterization of Corlin Corlin is a father and a wealthy businessman who is very busy. In addition, he also became a school donation. In my opinion, Corlin is having less communication with Jeffrey. Corlin often went out of town so he communicate with his son by letter and even rarely read by him, only a few when he had time and remember.
Corlin : Oh, of course there were letters. And I read themthough Im sorry admit I never really paid enough attention to what they had to tell me. I supposed it was because theyd always reach me at some crucial point in my travels. I remember one particular letter that Arrived when I was finishing up a little management consultant Assignment in London. I never had a chance to read that one until nearly a month later, when I was in Tyrolon still another job. Travelling about like that can make you forgetpersonal contact. And that, I suppose, is a dreadful thing.

This dialogue which makes me think that because he is busy, Jeffrey received less attention and affection, so Jeffrey became less in social terms. Why do I say this? Because, first I argue that Peter had lied. But after I read it and explore it again, I think it might be what Peter said is true. It was proper for the principal hesitate to him, but behind that all because Jeffrey he becomes scared. So, Peter who initially afraid but dare to tell because what he says is true.
Peter : It wasnt you so much, sir. We had seen you, and you didnt look like the sort of fellow people should be scared of. It was Jeffrey who had us all scared. It was the way he looked at you, sometimesvery stern-like, and with his face up close against yours. It was pretty scary, believe me.

One thing, Corlin divorced with his wife while Jeffrey still alive, so it might be because of that he bustle himself to work and forget that he has a precious one who needs to be love and care, Jeffrey. Unfortunately, he is not sensitive to his son. He spoiled his son by the money which he thinks it can fulfill his needs and makes him happy although he is far from him. He also

put too much believed in him even though he as a father may not be fully familiar to him. Jeffrey always give the good news to Corlin, Jeffrey just knew his father from afar, but he thought to make Corlin happy is by winning tournaments, so he using his father position to controlled all people in his school, for example, one of which is take Peters tennis racket that he thinks Peter is his rival. Maybe he was not satisfied to make Corlin proud of him, he tried to follow the swimming tournament where Corlin used to won that tournament until he died because of drowning in the pool. In the end, he is not accepting the fact what has been said by Peter. I already said, he is too believed with Jeffrey by just the words not the reality.

C.

Conclusion I knew that Corlin wanted to be a good father for Jeffrey because he was the only parent

(he and his wife was divorced). But, the way he treated his son was wrong. Corlin supposed taking his time to Jeffrey, but in fact he only communicated by the letter. The important thing is he should remember that money cannot buy the happiness, it is just a moment we feel happy when we use it then it is just disappear. Whereas children like Jeffrey needed attention and affection, it is the most important.
