a) Define the law of parallelogram of forces. What is the use of this law?

b) Four forces of magnitudes 10N, 20N, 30N and 40N are acting respectively along the four
sides of a square ABCD. Determine the magnitude, direction and position of the resultant force.

2.

a) Define the following terms: Friction, limiting force of friction, coefficient of friction and
angle of friction.

b) A block A weighing 100N rests on a rough inclined plane whose inclination to the
horizontal is 450. This block is connected to another block B weighing 300N resting on a
rough horizontal plane, by a weightless rigid bar inclined at 300 to the horizontal. Find the
horizontal force required to be applied to the block B to just move the block A in upward
direction. Assume angle of limiting friction as 150 at all surfaces where there is a sliding.

a) Derive an expression for the velocity ratio of a belt drive considering thickness of the belt.

b) Power is transmitted using a V-belt drive. The included angle of V-grooves is 300. The belt is

2 cm deep and maximum width is 2 cm. if the mass of the belt is 3.5 gm per cm length and
maximum allowable stress is 140N/cm2, determine the maximum power transmitted when angle
of lap is 1400 and = 0.15.

a) Derive an expression for the moment of inertia of a triangular section about an axis passing
through the CG of the section and parallel to the base.

b) A hemisphere of diameter 60mm is placed on the top of a cylinder, whose diameter is also
60 mm. The height of the cylinder is 75mm.Find the common CG of the composite body. (9M)

a) What do you mean by a Bar of uniform strength?

Take the factor of safety as 4.

a) Derive the relationships between shear force, bending moment and rate of loading at a section
of a beam.

b) A beam of 10m long and simply supported at each end has a uniformly distributed load of
1000N/m extending from the left end up to the centre of the beam. There is also an anticlockwise couple of 15KN-m at a distance of 2.5m from the right end. Draw the shear force and
bending moment diagrams.

a) Show that for a beam subjected to pure bending, neutral axis coincides with the centroid of

the cross-section.

b) Prove that the ratio of depth to width of the strongest beam that can be cut from a circular log

of diameter is 1.414. Hence calculate the depth and width of the strongest beam that can be cut
of a cylindrical log of wood whose diameter is 300mm.

a) An I-section has flanges of width b and overall depth is 2b. The flanges and web are of
uniform thickness t. Find the ratio of the maximum shear stress to the average shear stress. (7M)
b) A beam of square section is used as a beam with one diagonal horizontal. The beam is
subjected to a shear force F, at a section. Find the maximum shear in the cross-section of the
beam and draw the shear distribution diagram for the section.

b) An electric light fixture weighing 15N hangs from a point C, by two strings AC and BC. AC
is inclined at 600 to the horizontal and BC at 450 to the vertical. Using Lamis theorem or
otherwise determine the forces in the strings AC and BC.

a) State the laws of static and dynamic friction.

b) A cord connects two bodies of weights 300N and 800N. The two bodies are placed on an
inclined plane and cord is parallel to the inclined plane. The coefficient of friction for the
weight of 400N is 0.15 and that for 800N is 0.4. Determine the inclination of the plane to the
horizontal and the tension in the cord when the motion is about to take place, down the inclined
plane. The body weighting 400N is below the body weighing 800N.

a) Derive an expression for the ratio of tension for a flat belt passing over a pulley, when it is
just on the point of slipping.

b) An open belt connects two flat pulleys, the smaller pulley being of 400mm in diameter. The
angle of lap on the smaller pulley is 1600 and coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is

0.25. Which of the following alternatives would be more effective in increasing the power that
could be transmitted: i) Increasing the initial tension by 10% and ii) Increasing the coefficient
of friction by 10% by the application of suitable dressing to the belt?

a) State and prove the theorem of parallel axis.

b) A column is made up of two rolled steel joists of I-section 16cm 8cm 1cm with plate
20cm 1cm riveted with flanges one each on the top and at the bottom. The edges of the plates
flush with outside edges of joists flanges. Find for the compound section:
i) Ixx ,

ii) Iyy and

iii) Least radius of gyration.

b) A steel rod of 3cm diameter is enclosed centrally in a hollow copper tube of external diameter
5cm and internal diameter of 4cm. the composite bar is then subjected to an axial pull of
45000N. If the length of each bar is equal to 15cm, determine: i) The stresses in the rod and tube
and ii) Load carried by each bar. Take E for steel as 2.1 105 N/mm2 and for copper as
1.1 105 N/mm2.

a) What do you mean by point of contra flexure? Is the point of contra flexure and point of
inflexion different?

b) What are the different types of beams? Differentiate between a cantilever and a simply
supported beam with examples.

c) A simply supported beam AB, hinged at A and B. It is subjected to a clockwise couple of 24


kN-m at a distance of 2m from the left end A. Draw the shear force and bending moment
diagrams.

a) What do you mean by section modulus? Find an expression for section modulus for a

rectangular, circular and hollow circular section.

b) Three beams have the same length, same allowable bending stress and the same bending
moment. The cross-section of the beams are a square, rectangle with depth twice the width and a

circle. Find the ratios of weights of the circular and the rectangular beams with respect to square
beams.

a) How will you prove that the shear stress changes abruptly at the junction of the flange and the
web of an I-section?

each chain.

a) Prove that the angle of friction is equal to the angle of the inclined plane, when a solid body
of weight W placed on inclined plane, is about to slide down.

b) Find the force required to move a load of 30N up a rough inclined plane, the force being
applied parallel to the plane. The inclination of the plane is such that when the same body is
kept on a perfectly smooth plane inclined at that angle, a force of 6N applied at an inclination of

300 to the plane keeps the same in equilibrium. Assume coefficient of friction between the rough

plane and the load is equal to 0.3.

a) Distinguish between initial tension and centrifugal tension in a belt.

b) An open belt running over two pulleys 1.5m and 1.0m diameters connects two parallel shafts
4.8m apart. The initial tension in the belt when stationary is 3000N. If the smaller pulley is
rotating at 600RPM and coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.3, determine the
power transmitted taking centrifugal tension into account. The mass of belt is given as
0.6703 kg/m length.

a) What do you understand by axes of reference?

48.08 cm2.

a) Define a composite bar. How will you find the stresses and load carried by each member of a
composite bar?

b) A load of 2MN is applied on short concrete column 500mm 500mm. The column is
reinforced with four steel bars of 10mm diameter, one in each corner. Find the tresses in the
concrete and steel bars. Take E for steel as 2.1 105 N/mm2 and for concrete as 1.4 105
N/mm2.

a) What are the different types of loads acting on a beam? Distinguish the point load from a
uniformly distributed load.

c) A horizontal beam 10m long is carrying a uniformly distributed load of 1kN/m. The beam is
supported on two supports 6m apart. Find the position of the supports, so that bending moment
on the beam is as small as possible. Also draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams.

b) A water main of 500mm internal diameter and 20mm thick is running full. The water main is

of cast iron and is supported at two points 10m apart. Find the maximum stress in the metal. The
cast iron and water weigh 72000 N/m3 and 10000 N/m3.

a) Prove that the maximum shear stress in a circular section of a beam is 4/3 times that average
shear stress.

b) The shear force acting on a section of a beam is 50kN. The section of the beam is of T-shaped
of dimensions 100mm 100mm 20mm. The moment of inertia about the horizontal neutral
axis is 314.221 104 mm4. Calculate the shear stress at the neutral axis and at the junction of the
web and the flange.

coefficient of friction between all the surfaces in contact to be 0.3, determine the minimum

a) Derive an expression for optimum speed of flat belt for the transmission of maximum power
considering the effect of centrifugal tension.

3m apart and transmits 3.75kW from the smaller pulley that rotates at 300 RPM. Coefficient of
friction between the belt and the pulleys is 0.3 and the safe working tension in 100N/cm width.
Determine: i) Minimum width of the belt, ii) Initial belt tension and iii) Length of the belt
required.

a) Define the terms: Elasticity, Elastic limit, Youngs modulus and Modulus of rigidity.

b) Three bars made of copper, zinc and aluminium are of equal length and have cross-section
500, 750 and 1000 mm2 respectively. They are rigidly connected at their ends. If this compound
member is subjected to a longitudinal pull of 250 kN, estimate the proportional of the load
carried on each rod and the induced stresses. Take the value of E for copper as 1.3 105 N/mm2,
for zinc as 1.0 105 N/mm2 and for aluminium as 0.8 105 N/mm2.
