    Vlastimil Jansa is a Czech chess grandmaster born in 1942 in Prague. He learned chess at age 8 and became Prague's youth champion at age 14. He studied sports science at Charles University in Prague and became a professional soldier, reaching the rank of captain. Jansa has represented Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in numerous Chess Olympiads, winning a team silver medal in 1982. He has also coached, written books and articles on chess, and developed a test to measure young players' talents in the 1970s.

    VlastimilJansa(bornNovember27,1942inPrague)isa chessgrandmasterfromtheCzechRepublic(formerly Czechoslovakia). Helearnedchesswhileinhospitalattheageofeightand atfourteen,becametheyouthchampionofPrague.In 1959,hefinishedsecondintheCzechoslovaknational juniorchampionship.Academically,hequalifiedinsports sciencesfromtheCharlesUniversityinPrague,before becomingaprofessionalsoldierandreachingtherankof captain.Aspartofhischesseducation,hestudiedunder thetutelageofIMEmilRichter(18941971). Adeepandoriginalthinker,Jansahasbeenoneofthe CzechRepublic'sleadingplayersformanyyears, collectingexperienceacrossarangeofchessactivities. RepresentinghiscountryattheChessOlympiadsona numberofoccasions,hewonateamsilvermedalin1982. Hehasalsobeenacoachandawriterofbooksand theoreticalarticles.
