Nejeeb Khan AIA, RIBA Founder & Managing Director
Nejeeb founded KGD in 2003 along with Ned Kirschbaum and Jim Bradburn of Fentress Architects. Subsequently he started KGD Architecture and is instrumental in KGDs thought leadership. His prior exposure to large scale projects globally brings an ambitious vision for KGD as a player in the AEC industry. Nejeeb holds a Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Colorado, and is certified by the Royal Institute of British Architects and the American Institute of Architects.

Ajay Gupta AIA Executive Director


Ajays leadership as a member of KGDs board of directors steers KGDs technical and business process. His professional experience prior to his directorship at KGD spans twelve years in India as well as the USA. Ajay completed his Master of Architecture from Illinois Institute of Technology, USA.

B. R. V. Murthy B. E. Elec Director


Murthy has come on Board of Kgd as a Director to spearhead the engineering team and bring along his vast experience as an entrepreneur. Prior to joining Kgd, Murthy founded and successfully ran a 400 strong consulting engineering company, namely Potential Service Consultants Private Limited for over 20 years, in Bangalore. He has extensively lectured in India and abroad and is a member of many professional organizations.

Anjali Ganapathy M. Arch Director Design


Anjalis role as a member of KGDs board of directors at KGD has been to drive companys growth through design initiatives and processes. Her prior experience as a designer at some top design firms includes Los Angeles and Seatle. Her pedagogical exposure in teaching design studios at the University of Minnesota, brings in a strong mentorship to the company. Anjali holds a Master degree in Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, USA.

Shivalika Midha B. Arch Director


Shivalikas contribution towards KGD, has been in various aspects of the firms impressive growth. Her role as a member of KGDs board of directors at KGD is to spearhead the interiors vertical and further set the bar for the companys escalation. Prior to KGD Shivalika has worked with various architectural firms in Newyork city, Washington & Miami.

Steven Pliam M.S., M. Arch Director


Stevens role at KGD has been to push innovation forward in the areas of computing and visualization. He brings over ten years of experience as a key person at Frank Gehry & Associates. Steven has teaching experience as a technical educator, instructor, and lecturer for both college students and the AEC industry. He has completed his Master of Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. In addition, Steven has a second masters degree from the Media Lab at MIT.

C.J. Kosalraman AIA, LEED AP, IIA Director


Kosals role as a director at kgd involves heading the hospitality vertical. He has gained extensive experience working with the leading international hotel operators worldwide for the past 16 years. Prior to joining KGD, Kosal served as a Principal, Senior Vice President and Director of Operations India for HKS Inc., USA. He has completed his Master of Architecture from University of Oklahoma, USA.

A residential township of the superlative in Gurgaon comprising of 700 highend villas on 106 acres at about 15 km from the Delhi International Airport.

There are two themes to the Township. One is inspired by the sun kissed architecture of the Spanish Renaissance a symbiosis of porticos, courtyards, terraces, porches, patios, niches, cornices and decorative elements architectured to an overall harmony. The other theme is a contemporary villa paying reverence to the masters of the Bauhaus and the modern epoch where in harmony is found through proportions, functionality and soothing calmness for the eye. Apart from the residential component the Township has primary and secondary schools, a healthclub, an indoor stadium and clinics. A mixed use area, a retail space and a hotel are also planned.

Orissa is the heart of Indian mining, especially bauxite from which aluminium is won. A Township was required to house the staff at Jharsaguda, where Indias biggest aluminium smelter is under construction. The entire Township is divided into 2 phases. In the first Phase which is spread over 70 acres, the Housing is predominantly formed by clusters of G+4 around a semi-enclosed courtyard. The first phase of the Township is currently under construction.

Topography of the project necessitates an ideal mix of foliage and concrete structures there by combating the harsh climatic conditions. Pathways adjoining the well laid out road with expansive stretch of trees on one side enhance the pedestrian experience. Situated in the periphery of the city (Mysore) known for its serenity is the impending integrated township by AWHO. The design depicts a perfect concoction of urban lifestyle and the lush green landscape. As the site is aslant, the entire layout has been designed in accordance to its natural contours categorized into 3 levels ranging from the hi-end villas (placed at the highest point) to the economical 2 BHK apartments (located at the lowest level). The gateway leads one to the sprawling central landscape surrounded by villas (hi-end and mid segment) on either sides. The township which houses 217 villas and 50 apartments have easy access to the play area and amenities block comprising community centre, parlors, entertainment & Retail zone.

The design consists of an urban mutation, that re-orients the relationship between residences and landscapes, making them melt into a unique complex structure. The project is characterized by its fragmentation, owing to the clients brief of having less than 20000 sq.m parcels. The resulting space is a new landscape that recovers the original typography of the valley, reconfiguring its mouth into a rain harvesting system.

Chhattisgarh Housing Board (CGHB or Board) intends to construct integrated townships in and around district, block head quarter, industrial areas, catchment areas of cottage insustries by constructing integrated townships through Housing Scheme Vikas Nagar Yojana. Housing Projects Group I is one set of proposed townships on three sites out of the 150 townships slated for development. The idea is to plan housing for lower income groups and economically weaker sections, and Government officers of various hierarchy . The proposals have different typologies of housing with an overall development of residential infrastructure including water supply design, electrical design, road infrastructure design, Landscape design, common utility building design , Forestry & Horticulture designs, water body development, solar energy designs, open spaces design including parks, children play area, club house design and designs of local shopping zones in this Sector.

Theme oriented Townships are a new interpretation of a time tested concept. Initially theme oriented Townships developed across the world alongside industrial conglomerates to accommodate the work force. Over the past 200 years the themes have changed to lifestyle housing. The ETA Group incorporated luxury living in their Dubai Lifestyle City project, which is a mix of high-end residential condominiums, Duplexes, penthouses and luxury villas. Along with the residences, the project boasts of a four- and a five star hotel, a shopping center, a theater and a sports training center. The masterplan was developed by Ashai Design, California. The entire project architecturally replicates a tuscan model, including the landscaping, with modern luxury amenities and safety technology.

Deemed as the mega project of the Middle East, Sir Norman Fosters masterplan covers 32 sq.km along 16 km of coastline just outside Muskat. The City comprises of over 20 hotels, hospitals, un versities, shopping malls, schools and a marina. The masterplan comprises of a series of clustered communities with private courtyards and narrow, winding streets that fuse seamlessly with an eff cient road network extending across the site. A self contained city of highest international standards, this project is a flagship for masterplanning and design projects. Planned in 3 phases of construction, the first phase commenced in 2008.

These twin towers rise more than 700 feet with a graceful tilt suggestive of two dancers in rhythm with one another, one convex and the other concave, artfully connected yet independent. Referred to as the Dancing sisters (nick named as the SPICE GIRLS in reference to Dubais role in spice trade), the towers comprise 2,297,800 sft of mixed use space, including a five star Hotel Suites Tower, 250 luxury rental residences with hotel-like services and amenities, prime corporate office space, conference centers, highend retail shops, restaurants, hospitality and entertainment areas. Sitting across a man-made lake from the monumental Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, these towers provide dramatic views of the Persian Gulf. They express the dynamic celebration and good luck to a booming city with a vertical skyline unlike any other in the world.

The design creates a central open space with an urban landscape, inspirational architecture and cascading ponds. Residential apartments and penthouses face into the park, with complete amenities including a retail centre, clubhouse & auditorium. Service apartment anchor the main entrance to the property with landmark presence. Sustainable design elements, like harvesting of water through the site, reusing treated sewage water for landscape & for flushing systems have been introduced to create a sensitive and contemporary response to the Green concept. The vision is to create unique residential apartments and penthouses facing the park, shutting out the clamor of urbanity beyond the site.

Kalpataru the term refers to a brand name of one of the leading real estate development groups, it speaks of a whole diversified presence, the residences, the nostalgia for apartment living. A whole new creative thinking on form is created by the sun shading systems applied along its height. These become a part for the whole residential building. The design intent is to have an inclusive concept of the pieces, a green facade composition, and a landscape available to merge.

This is a luxury apartment building located along sterling road in Nungambakkam, Channai, which is one of the most prime locations in the city. The one acre site does not offer any remarkable views, thus one of the main design intents was to have each apartment overlooking beautiful landscaped gardens and pools within the site itself. The building has been designed to have an iconic appearance. The apartment units (2500 sq. ft. 3BHK, and 3380 sq. ft. 4BHK) have been designed to have three open sides to maximize views of the green below, and for ample cross ventilation. The units have large balconies, and additional touches of luxury like dry landscape areas.

The site is very flat. The entire the site has ample vegetation with an array of fruit bearing trees, especially coconut. The southern end of the site abuts the Chalikkavattom River. There is a small amount of marshy land on the eastern edge of the site. The site is surrounded by mostly single storey residential structures.

Vedanta University is the first private multi-disciplinary, research based university in the east that follows the pedagogical model of the like of Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford. The master plan concept diagram represents the intersection of the humanities and the sciences. The setting is a 6000 acre master plan in the Puri Konark area with the university precinct occupying 720 acres. The architecture & infrastructure design bring to bear models of sustainable planning and development. Its architecture includes a Central Library, School of Engineering & Mathematics, Schools of Humanities, Architecture and Student and Faculty Residence Halls. Phase 1 comprises 720 acres of infrastructure conceptual design, 200 acre landscape and infrastructure development along with architecture and interiors for 3.2 million SFT.

Jubail University will be a world class university college, built to last on a grand scale as a key part of Jubails evolving history. RKD is responsible for 250,000 sq.m of academic facilities, 102,000 sq.m of staff accommodation and 380,000 sq.m of student accommodation on an entirely new campus that combines the identity of a rapidly growing town with the sense of a real urban community. The university curriculum will be centred on Engineering Studies, with a special emphasis on mechanical, civil, structural, electrical and chemical engineering. In addition the university will offer courses in English, Business, Architecture and Computer Science. The student population will number 18,000.

As one of the biggest Healthcare providers with over 25000 beds in India, the Apollo Group envisioned a world class teaching and medical facility: also a realm in which age old delivered techniques of healing could merge with modern medicine . Transferring this into an architectural environment was done by the three dimensional mobius band. The main walkway amalgamates the idea of an Indian bazaar of yore. The pathway becomes a datum on which institutions, hospitals and residential units are scattered. Comprising of hospitals, medical, nursing, dental and pharmacy colleges and support buildings on a 100 acre campus this research oriented institution also houses staff and students in residential units summing up to 4 million SF.

The building expresses two sensibilities: A more formal historical context of the campus in its entry side and to make a more spontaneous response rooted in innovative expression in its opposing face. The building is designed to connect between indoor and outdoor spaces for learning and events thus contributing to high energy -efficient and sustainable operation in a climate which is mild all through the year.

This Design/Building state of the art facility is not only the fundamental point for Skyline Community College, but for the surrounding community as well. The building houses a Cyber Caf, Bookstore, and an indoor and outdoor dining area served by a full service kitchen. With the association of Hensel-Phelps, two main components were Building 4 and 11. Building 4 is a 70,000-square foot building which houses Skyline Colleges wellness, cosmetology, and multicultural programs. Building 11 is a one-storey, 7,000 square foot structure that houses the colleges automobile technology facility. The building consists of a structural steel frame, aluminum storefront, curtain wall and an architectural concrete that gives its distinctive characteristic.

The school located in Vadodara, Gujarat, is designed on a 2.8 acre land. It has 5 blocks- Welcome centre, Junior SLC, Senior SLC, Multipurpose block and a library block. The blocks are placed around the central Open Air Theatre. The school blocks are G+2 floors with free flowing forms to reflect the Non- controlling concept. The total built up area for all blocks is 60,000 sft. The school is designed for a peak load of 900 students.

The master plan has been designed keeping in mind the effective use of amenities, reducing the proximity between facilities. The building is a two storied low raise structure keeping in mind the safety of every child studying in the school. The landscaping project responds primarily to the needs expressed by the architects to use nature to mitigate the excesses of the climate of Jaipur. Shadowing the facades in summer and to filter the light which is so intense that reflects the sky of Jaipur. The landscaping is closely related to architectural design inspired from the amber fort gardens and the intrinsic lattice work which is very prominent in the windows around Jaipur. Trees touching penetrate between the buildings facades. The interior floors extend outward to strengthen the sense of permeability between buildings and nature.

The administrative building, training center and library are centrally placed for easy access. The training center is inward looking with internal courts for students to gather in. Residential facilities are located along the periphery.

The Vedanta Aluminum Plant Head Quarters was designed to be a showcase for their company. It comprises an aluminium museum on the ground floor level illustrating Vedantas history: the history of metallurgy & the uses of aluminium. On the first floor is a convention center accommodating a crowd of two hundred people. The second block is the executive office suite with its own dedicated security entry and access to the board room at the top the viewing gallery. The last block is the office to house hundred and fifty vedanta employees and engineers.

The emphasis was on creating a sense of openness in the campus. The golf course near the entrance gives a landscape view which leads to the rectangular amenities block which seems to emerge from the ground. The amenities block overlooks a large plaza in the rear around which the four office blocks are arranged along a diagonal axis. Each block has a BUA of half a million sqft. The services for these block are located along the periphery, so as to provide the entire office space with an unobstructed view of the plaza below.

The material palette for the buildings faade emulates sandstone. This material choice allows the building to exist, not as a foreign object, but rather an integrated element in the natural landscape. Along with the philosophy of environmental co-existence, the design retains a striking visual impact and transforms the building into a prominent city landmark. The five sectors that compose RAMKY are transformed into five sections of the building. These sections are literally bridged together and the workplace is no longer a separate department. The building itself reinforces the identity of the company.

This corporate office building was designed to act as a signature building for IOCL, as its situated in a very prime location in Hyderabad. Since the site is located at the junction of two roads, the building gets good visibility; the form of the building was designed keeping this in mind. The curve of the plot is reflected in the volume of the building, and interlocking geometric forms keep the elevations interesting from all angles. The 10% required green space was strategically placed so as to increase the frontage thus giving pedestrians a good view of the building too. A combination on ACP and glass accentuates the forms, and the canopy above gives the building a stronger skyline.

It was clear that IOCL needed an impactful new presence, yet subtle to the Indian context. In keeping with the Indian Oil spirit, we conceived a project that was powerful in its simplicity yet cost- effective. We developed a visual language with a new Oil rig-like complex to communicate quality along with dwell-defined faade language to distinguish it as a brand within the urban landscape. The idea of the traditional DIYA the oil lamp constituted the concept. We envisaged a complex engulfed with earth and with its core court the oil itself. Bold brown sandstone conveys the idea of engulfing oil within itself which is designed as a visual glazing system maximizing day lighting. We created an engaging setting for all the four buildings required within the complex.

The design brief called for a modern design, hi-tech operational base. The key elements of the design are spatial analysis, reinterpretation of traditional architecture, careful selection of materials and manipulation of light. The overall result is a carefully thought out design that caters very well to the office needs. The proposed design gives an identity to the different offices as a unified organization, while giving individual expression to the separate departments and their unique activities. The accommodation is laid out as a series of three blocks; each block houses key services and individual departments. The blocks are gathered and connected along a large podium space, a civic forum, which gives access to all of the building facilities. Open and fully accessible spaces allow the buildings to be navigated in a safe and efficient manner, while offering opportunities for civic ceremonies, presentations and social gatherings. Separating the blocks and connecting the interiors with the surrounding landscape, providing a sense of place and context. These spaces combine to place social interaction at the heart of the building and allow the public realm to pervade the whole building at ground floor.

The idea of the project is oriented on a simple geometry, strictly monolithic, in close complementary relationship with the usage that defines it. The severity of pure geometric form is a counterpoint facade application, a dense repetition of the geometric matrix 850 mm x 850mm that engulfs an overall pattern, compact and lightweight at the same time. The base connectivity of the existing street is looped overall via alternative floors. The overall experience is drawn as an elevated street connection so as to elongate the street shopping experience and facilitate the vendors in not having stands in every floor.

Transferring this into an architectural environment was done by the three dimensional mobius band. The main walkway amalgamates the idea of an Indian bazaar of yore. The pathway becomes a datum on which institutions, hospitals and residential units are scattered. Comprising of hospitals, medical, nursing, dental and pharmacy colleges and support buildings on a 100 acre campus this research oriented institution also houses staff and students in residential units summing up to 4 million SF.

In the Indian context, the necessity for adequate Healthcare is all but engraved in granite. The Vedanta University Hospital covers both aspects being a multi speciality Hospital and a teaching institution. Located in the town of Puri in Orissa, the hospital will in its final outfit have over 710000 SF and 1500 beds. The main approach is from the South, which overlooks an atrium and incorporates bed in the upper floors. There is a separate entrance for the clinical block, located in the west. The Northern tower is the diagnostic and treatment block, while the eastern tower houses the educational facility and beds. The implementation of the entire project will be done in 3 phases, the first of which is currently underway the teaching facility with 570 beds.

One of the clients desires was for the design of this project to be strictly guided by the principles of Vaastu at every level. Thus the buildings location on the site, orientation, shape and form, height, and internal planning were all designed to accommodate the Vaastu requirements, without compromising functional efficiency. The college block has been designed to have an open, airy feel at every floor with terrace gardens providing ample light and visual relief. The exterior of all the buildings is treated in a contemporary fashion with clean lines.

The majority of this building was torn down to make room for the new north pavilion, but places and characteristics were retained in the new structure. Several additional legacy pieces still exist on the site including a water tower and chapel built in 1934, memento pieces of the original tuberculosis tent, and a 100-year old well. H+Ls designers also retained the Blue House, an old Victorian structure which currently houses ELMC volunteers. This new addition is referred to as Building on the Best and respects the historical legacy that Exempla Lutheran Medical Center has provided to the community while it positions itself to continue to deliver state-of-the-art care as one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States for the next century.

The north pavilion project at exempla Lutheran medical center introduces a new 295,000 square foot multi-story building addition to the north east portion of the existing hospital. The new building houses surgical services, womens and family services , step-down intermediate surgical care unit, acute care bed unit, one bed floor for future expansion along with surgical support spaces, and other miscellaneous service lines as needed. The hospital entrance lobby was renovated and expanded by adding a new entry atrium, a new vehicle drop off canopy, and a tower to help define a new entry plaza. The upgrades create a village feel to the campus as well as recognize the historical legacy of the original section of the building which was demolished to make way for the new north pavilion addition.

Referred to as the Dancing sisters (nick named as the SPICE GIRLS in reference to Dubais role in spice trade), the towers comprise 2,297,800 sft of mixed use space, including a five star Hotel Suites Tower, 250 luxury rental residences with hotel-like services and amenities, prime corporate office space, conference centers, highend retail shops, restaurants, hospitality and entertainment areas. Sitting across a man-made lake from the monumental Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, these towers provide dramatic views of the Persian Gulf. They express the dynamic celebration and good luck to a booming city with a vertical skyline unlike any other in the world.

The building has been designed as two interlocking forms forming a scissor shape, which creates private courts within which facilities like the swimming pool and other spaces that require privacy are located. This club house has a double height banquet hall and restaurant on one side of the entrance lobby, shops near the entrance, and space for indoor games and a library on the other side of the lobby. The double height lobby opens to a large party deck overlooking the pool beyond, which is directly accessible to the banquet hall as well to act as a spill over space. The deck is punctured with landscape elements and trees for ambience. The building form features curved walls which lends a dynamic feel, and employs textured surfaces and brick to fit into the residential area.

The modernization of the airport included a renovation and expansion of already existing Terminal A and a new consolidated rental car facility. The new high-tech design for Terminal B is contextually inspired by San Joses technological region, the Silicon Valley. The terminal Nicknamed Telescope, a symbolic look of the future, will project the regions character as the outer casing which is based on the design of a coaxial cable.

This new terminal is a two-tier building with the lower concourse serving arrivals and the upper concourse serving departures. The Terminal has 160 check-in counters, 74 aerobridges, 30 parking bays, 72 immigration counters, 15X-rayscreening areas and duty free shops. Over 90% of passengers will use this terminal when completed. This new terminal as planned has been completed in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. World class retail and F&B spaces within Terminal 3, ranging from the warm shell to the interior design bring T3 to truly international standards.

The existing airport required a retail area that could compliment the international design standards of the new existing airport. With Domestic and International traffic moving in close proximity, it has a complex set of planning parameters. The key challenge was to build a phased approach to the overall commercial master-plan whereby the end picture can be implemented phase wise as traffic numbers develop without unnecessary capital write-offs or disruption. Our design scope has included all retail zones (including Domestic and International).

As the world airports go through a makeover, Male is no step behind. GMR started the year by taking over the operations from the Maldivian authorities. The idea was to very strategically enhance the overall look and feel of the entire terminal with very minimal modifications as the airport already has a shelf life of 3 years with the new terminal coming up. Again being one of the very old airports the coordination between existing and new has been one of the most challenging aspects of the project. In addition to which KGD had to come up with a retail planning to ensure the passenger holding was increased in order to increase the dwell time. The new design has added a new feel to the complete terminal and the planning of breaking the whole project into multiple packages has helped in ensuring that the timelines of construction are very controlled.

In this project, the existing bus terminal on 14.43 acres has been converted to a mixeduse development, with 60% allotted for the bus terminal, and 40% for commercial use. The commercial zone with 7 lakh sqft of BUA (which includes a shopping mall, 3 star hotel and residential apartments) is located on the portion of the site facing the main road for better saleability and to create a visible landmark with the shopping mall. The existing entry and exit points for the bus terminal have been retained to minimize disruption of the macro level city traffic patterns. The curvilinear road connecting these entry and exit points divides the site into two zones, with the terminal in the rear portion, and the commercial zone in the front. A green belt runs adjacent to this road creating visual appeal. The mall and business hotel are both accessible from the main road, and have individual building entrances and exits, as well as basement parking. The space designed between the mall and hotel serves as an active communal plaza. The residential apartments are on the rear side with a separate entry from the secondary road for privacy.
