In future, the centralised control of the entire cargo screening process and the integration of these traditionally stand-alone

systems along with vehicle and container identication and intelligence information, will offer further advances in both security and efciency of throughput.

CASE STUDY- INTEGRATED SCANNING

IN THE SCAN - Integrated Cargo Scanning At Ports

There is an increased demand for advanced cargo inspection systems that can efficiently scan cargo whilst moving through ports. Faster scanning speeds mean higher throughput, a huge benefit for shippers and port operators alike. Manufacturers need to develop solutions that focus on enhanced inspection capabilities, improving operational effectiveness for high speed scanning. With this in mind, Rapiscan consistently develops new, innovative and flexible approaches to scanning cargo, delivering market leading technology, focussed on meeting both modern threat and contraband detection needs and the operational requirements of its customers. The Rapiscan range of Eagle inspection solutions; including portal, gantry and mobile systems provide the answer to providing a fully integrated high speed inspection system at todays ports both now and in the future. Those responsible for cargo operations at ports, face the challenge of managing the (apparently opposing) requirements of the need for speedy cargo processing in order to compete in a global market, versus the requirement to thoroughly investigate cargo for identifying security threats and contraband contained within shipments. Cargo screening is traditionally seen as a necessary bottleneck in the port process; however the latest technology offers a wide choice of solutions, offering high throughput with increased detection capabilities. The ability to select the optimal mix of security screening solutions is complex; with each port presenting its own unique challenges, both in terms of physical layout and patterns of cargo and transport types both entering and leaving the facility. It is important therefore for the selected screening solutions to offer exibility and to be capable of future enhancement to allow port authorities to maintain and enhance their competitive position. It is also true to say that these patterns change, driven by variation in the threat landscape, customs priorities, and regular changes in the commercial cargo market. It is important therefore for the selected screening solutions to offer flexibility and to be capable of future enhancement to allow port authorities to maintain and enhance their competitive position. We believe it is crucial to offer customers a large selection of cargo and vehicle inspection products that share a common design philosophy. Modular design elements that are common across multiple products, such as the operating software, enabling operators trained on one product to quickly move to a different product. Multiple scan modes also mean that one product is able to inspect in different ways to respond to changing operational requirements. For example, a Rapiscan Eagle portal scanner can be used to either scan an entire truck, using Rapiscans CabScan technology including the driver cab, or just the cargo. This capability provides operational flexibility and maximises the effectiveness of the scanning platform. Our high-energy X-ray rail-mounted gantry inspection service is designed for automated operation by a minimum number of personnel, allowing the comprehensive inspection of the whole un-occupied vehicle including drivers cab where detailed inspection is required, this highly effective nonintrusive inspection capability reduces the need for subsequent in depth manual inspection. By offering a wide variety of cargo screening methods, the ports of the future will be able to offer the advantages of ease of operation, a small operational footprint and crucially a low lifetime cost of ownership. Our unique inspection systems automatically detect the presence of specific threat materials, such as explosives and drugs. As a result, we are able to tailor cargo and vehicle inspection solutions that meet customer requirements by utilising our products and technologies either alone or in combination. cont.....

With optimal deployment of mobile, portal, rail and gantry based scanning solutions; port authorities are better able to enhance their competitive position, through increased security levels, threat detection and the subsequent seizure of contraband. In future, the centralised control of the entire cargo screening process and the integration of these traditionally stand-alone systems along with vehicle and container identification and intelligence information, will offer further advances in both security and efficiency of throughput.

APPLICATIONS At a busy seaport, for example, we can scan inbound and outbound cargo train containers of different sizes and configurations, including single or double stacked containers, at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour which would otherwise have to be manually inspected. The rapid inspection of rail of dense and densely-packed containerised cargo helps quickly identify a wide range of threats and suspect materials, including contraband goods, such as drugs, weapons and explosives. Busy ports can operate a drive through portal cargo inspection system for fast, accurate and efficient truck based cargo screening. This enables an automated operation with scan throughput up to 180 vehicles per hour. Self contained mobile cargo and vehicle inspection systems capable of driving on public roads, can be deployed at specific areas depending on operational needs and are designed to scan trucks and cargo containers to verify the contents and to identify the presence of hidden contraband, such as weapons, explosives and narcotics. Optional capabilities to help find low density contraband and radioactive material in cargo are also available. Our modular and flexible range of cargo and vehicle inspection products enables us to work with port customers to define a solution that meets their individual inspection requirements. Customers can choose from screening products capable of safely scanning occupied vehicles through to high energy X-ray screening of dense cargo in mobile, gantry, portal and rail deployment configurations, which can be used alone or in combinations. We recognise that a customers price for a scanner must include the cost of ownership over the units lifetime as well as the cost of acquisition, and as a result we are constantly working to reduce the total cost of ownership.
