The ship, provided it remains afloat, is the best survival unit and is more easily found by searching aircraft and other ships.

The Company requires boat and fire drills to be held on a monthly basis. Boat drills take the form of lowering the boats to embarkation level, bowsing them in and running the engine. At 3 monthly intervals the boats are lowered to the water, quick releases tested and general embarkation, lowering, abandonment and recovery techniques practised.

Fire drills are also held to familiarise personnel with fire fighting, rescue techniques and equipment.

Be sure in all cases that you are fully aware of your boat and fire station ( both Primary and Secondary ) and any special requirements, signals, duties that may apply whilst vessel is alongside or lightening.

Further details on emergency procedures, fire fighting and preparations for abandonment are given in Volume 6 of Regulations and Instructions.
