Thoughmostpeoplemaynotbelievethatthereisanyproblemtoworryabout,butthevery fewwhodoknow,manyofwhichgototheextremestateandstarttopresentinsaneactivity, inplaceoflogicthinking. Likeforexample,Alienswillbearrivingintheyear2000tocollectallyouUFOnutcases andtakeyoutoaplaceofsafety. MaybethebacksideoftheMoonorbetterstillontopofamountainonMars. TheyareincommunicationswithAliens,butdonotshowyoutheirtransmitterorreceiver soyoucanorderonefromyourlocalshop. Othersareconstructinglargeairships,armingmembers,andteachingthemhowtodefend themselvesandkill.Thisisthecrap,whichthisplanetisloadedwithsadlytosay butthe insanitylevelisincreasingatamuchfasterratethaneverbeforefromwhereIsitting.

New,ultralowleakagemultiplexerssuchas(MAX328andMAX329)haveextendedthe designlimitsforseriesresistorprotectionoverthoseforearliergenerationmultiplexers. Thenewdeviceslowleakage(1pAat25C20nAat125C)allowsvery highvalued protectionresistors. Resistorsof150kW,forexample,admitfaultcurrentsofonly1mAwhilewithstanding 150Vinput. At 1500V,theyadmitfaultcurrentsofonly 10mA. Theresistorsproduceonly 3mVofadditionalerrorat125C. Notethatinthenextfigureat 1500Vprotectionresistorsrequire15Wratingsfor continuousduty. However,inmostapplicationsyoucanscalethisthermalratingconsiderablybecausethe overvoltagehasamuchlowerdutycycle. Externalresistorsthusofferflexibility youcanchoosedifferentresistorvaluesfordifferent channelsinthesamedevice,andscaletheirpowerratingsasrequired. Integratedresistors,ontheotherhand,areconstrainedbytheirpackagepowerratingthis ratingmaylimitthenumberofchannelsthatcanwithstandovervoltageatthesametime. Theseriesresistorapproachprotectsthemultiplexer,butitdoesnotpreventcorruptionof signalsintheselectedchannel. Thesesignalsareatthemercyofovervoltageinanyoftheunselectedchannels. Butthedirectcauseisn'tovervoltageit'sfaultcurrent(theinjectedminoritycarriers mentionedearlier)flowingintothesubstrateviaoneormoreprotectiondiodes.
