Page 1 of 6 OVERVIEW Thi s Qui ck Instal l ati on Gui de contai ns i nformati on for the WorldDSL Line Units. Table 1. Line Units, Interfaces, and PTM Support LINE TERMINATION UNITS The WorldDSL Line Termination Units (LTUs) model LTU-804 is the Exchange Office side of an E1 transmission system. They connect to a remote WorldDSL Network Termination Unit (NTU) to provide a complete High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (HDSL) E1 system. The LTUs accept the DTE payload through G.703 and serial data (Nx64k) interface ports and transport data to the NTU over the HDSL loop at rates of up to 2.048 Mbps (the standard E1 rate). The LTUs require -36 to -72 Vdc input from a local power supply. The G.703 i nterface conforms wi th the ITU-T G.703 physi cal specification and can be configured for an impedance of 75 unbalanced or 120 balanced. User-selectable protocols conform the Nx64k interface to V.35, V.36, X.21, or RS-530 (RS-449) standards. The 2.048 Mbps payload is allocated to the G.703 and Nx64k ports in time slot increments of 64 kbps each. The LTUs can supply power to the remote NTUs using less than 120 Vdc and 50 mA on each HDSL loop. LTUs can line power 1 or 2 EDU-840 L3 doublers. LTUs can also line power UTUs. UNIVERSAL TERMINATION UNITS The WorldDSL Universal Termination Units (UTUs) model UTU-804 is LTU- and NTU-configurable HDSL line units with G.703 and/or Nx64k interfaces. The default configuration of the UTU is NTU. The UTUs are functionally identical to LTUs with the same interface (G.703 and/or Nx64k). The UTUs receive power from an LTU or local power supply. They do not supply power to other HDSL units. The UTUs can be installed in either a chassis or in an ERE remote enclosure. LTUs and UTUs can be connected for longer reach using EDU-804 L3 doublers. TRANSMISSION RANGES Transmission ranges are based on a signal attenuation of 35 dB at 292 kHz with 135 terminations and assume the presence of noise according to the model described in WorldDSL specification TS 101 135. The expected Bit Error Rate (BER) under this noise model is 1x10 -7 . The reach of the system in such a noise environment is 2.8 km (1.74 miles) over 0.4 mm (26 AWG) twisted-pair copper wire. Reducing the number of interferers in the cable results in greater transmission distances. COMPATIBILITY The LTUs and UTUs are compatible with the following WorldDSL shelves and enclosures. EMS-830 Exchange Office Management Shelf, rear connector access. EMS-832 Exchange Office Management Shelf, front connector access. ERE-811 Single-Slot Remote Enclosure. IMPORTANT The input voltage for the List 1C HDSL cards is a nominal -48 Vdc (tolerance -36 to -72 Vdc). However, to comply with the CE Mark Low Voltage Directive, the input voltage for these HDSL cards must be limited to a maximum of -60 Vdc and supplied by an isolated DC source that complies with TNV or earthed SELV requirements of the latest version of IEC 950. ! IMPORTANT Be careful when installing or modifying telephone lines. Dangerous voltages can be present. It is unsafe to install telephone wiring during a lightning storm. ! IMPORTANT Always disconnect all telephone lines and power connections before servicing or disassembling this equipment. For performance and safety reasons, only power supplies listed for use with telephone equipment by a locally recognized organization should be used with WorldDSL equipment. All wiring external to the product should follow the local wiring codes. ! IMPORTANT The line units contain static-sensitive components. Wear an antistatic wrist band connected to earth ground when installing these units. Page 3 of 6 Step 2: Line Unit Jumper Settings Jumpers must be set on the LTU-804 and UTU-804 if using a 120 interface or if grounding your G.703 cables at the data port on the shelf or remote enclosure. The locations of these jumpers (P8, P11, and P12) are shown in Figure 2. Figure 2. Jumper Locations on LTU-804 and UTU-804 Line Units To set the jumpers on the LTU-804 and UTU-804 line units: Step Action 1 Jumper P8 complies with the ITU G.703 requirement that an option be provided which allows the connection of the outer conductor of the coaxial pair or the screen of the symmetrical pair to earth (frame) ground at the G.703 input data port. Do one of the following: Do nothing if the factory settings provide the standard G.703 input port interface. Cable grounding is not used. Short P8 pins 1 and 2 if grounding the screen of the 120 cable. Short P8 pins 2 and 3 if grounding the outer conductor of the 75 input cable. 2 Jumpers P11 and P12 configure the line unit for use with a 75 or 120 G.703 interface. Place the four-position jumper block on one of the following: P11 for balanced 120 circuits. P12 for unbalanced 75 circuits (factory setting). P11 P12 P8 Step 3: Line Unit Installation To install an LTU or UTU into a shelf or remote enclosure: Table 3. G.703 75 Output Connector Pinouts Table 4. G.703 75 Input Connector Pinouts ! IMPORTANT The chassis ground of the shelf or remote enclosure receiving these units must be connected to earth ground for protection of the equipment and for the safety of personnel. ! IMPORTANT Primary protection for the HDSL line must be provided by the user. Both primary and secondary protection must be provided by the user if the E1 line runs outside of the building. Step Action 1 Install the line unit into the appropriate slot (1 through 16) of a shelf or into a remote enclosure. Each unit performs a brief power-up self test. During the test, the front-panel LED indicators flash in an incremental binary sequence to indicate the test in progress. If the LEDs stop incrementing, the unit has failed the self test. Observe the final LED pattern displayed, then contact ADC customer service. Step Action 2 The units attempt to establish the HDSL link, and the HDSL SYNC LEDs flash once per second. After approximately 30 seconds, confirm the following: One or both of the HDSL SYNC LEDs are green and the corresponding HDSL ALM LED is off. The HDSL transmission line is ready to transmit and receive user data. The units are now ready for configuration through the console screen menus. One or both of the HDSL SYNC LEDs continue to flash. If the LEDs do not stop flashing after approximately one minute, it indicates that the HDSL transmission pair corresponding to the indicator is experiencing an excessive signal loss or is open. Check the line and repair it if necessary. An LTU holds the configuration settings for both itself and the remote NTU. After the two units establish synchronization, the LTU checks if the remote NTU is the same type (same model number) as existed prior to the units achieving synchronization. If the NTU type is the same, the LTU configures the NTU to the previous settings that had been established. If the NTU type is different, the LTU configures the NTU to its factory default settings. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION After establishing communication with the remote line card, the HDSL system can be configured and its performance monitored from the local unit. If the HDSL link is down, the only parameters that can be changed are those on the local unit. The LTU also provides a special lockout feature that prevents users from changing the circuit configuration. When enabled, the maintenance terminal connected to an NTU provides a read-only view of the entire HDSL system. The console screen menus are not available when the HDSL line unit is under the control of a shelf management unit. Page 5 of 6 This page intentionally left blank.
