How Hip Hop Originated

Hip Hop is not what people think it is; it has changed in numerous ways and will continue to do so just because of the time period. lso a lot of people get hip hop mi!ed up with a lot of other genres that fall under hip hop such as gangsta rap and "#B. $n this paper $ am going to e!plain how hip hop originated and how long hip hop has been around not just in the %orth merica but globally. Hip Hop as music and culture formed around the 1&'()s when block parties became real big in %ew *ork +ity, particularly among frican merican youth residing in the Bron!,-.yson, /ric 0ichael. 1Hip Hop 0usic.12. Block parties incorporated .j)s who played popular genres of music, definitely funk and soul music. .j3s begin isolating the percussi4e breaks of popular songs due to the positi4e reception. 5his was common in 6amaica dub music and was largely introduced into %ew *ork by immigrants from 6amaica. $ncluding .6 7ool Herc, which who is generally considered the father of hip hop. Because the percussi4e breaks in funk, soul, and disco records were generally short, Herc and other .j started using two turntables to e!tend the breaks ,1Hip Hop 0usic.12 . What later became known as -"ap 7reyol= grew in popularity in the late 1&&()s with 7ing 9osse and Original "ap >tuff. %ew *ork +ity e!perienced a hea4y 6amaican hip hop influence during the 1&&(s. 5his influence was brought on by cultural shifts particularly because of the heightened immigration of 6amaicans to %ew *ork +ity and the merican8born 6amaican youth who were coming of age during the 1&&()s. $n /urope, frica, and sia, hip hop began to mo4e from the underground to mainstream audiences. $n /urope, hip hop was the domain of both ethnic nationals and immigrants. Hip Hop became 4ery popular in 9hiladelphia in the late 1&'(s. %ow we new school hip hop. 5he new school hip hop is just the second wa4e of hip hop music, originated in 1&;<81&;D with early records from "un8.0+ and :: +ool 6. $t was notable for taunts and boasts about rapping, and social8political commentary, both deli4ered in an aggressi4e, self8asserti4e style. $n image as in song its artists projected a tough, cool, street b8boy attitude. 5hese elements contrasted sharply with the funk and disco influenced outfits, no4elty hits, li4e bands, synthesi@ers and party rhymes of artists pre4alent prior to 1&;D . %ew school artists made shorter songs that could more easily gain radio play, and more cohesi4e :9s than their old school counterparts. By 1&;E their releases began to establish the hip hop album as a fi!ture of the mainstream. Hip hop music became commercially successful, as e!emplified by the Beastie Boys) 1&;E album :icensed to $$$, which was the first rap album to hit number 1 on the Billboard charts. When it hit the 1&&()s Hip Hop split and became more about /ast +oast 4ersus West +oast. 5he rapper %otorious B$B was real famous for claiming the east coast, and for the west coast it was 5upac >hakur which originally was born in %ew *ork +ity. $n 1&;D, his family mo4ed to Baltimore, 0aryland where he became good friends with 6ada 9inkett >mith. His family mo4ed again to Oakland, +alifornia,- +ameron, Bruce. $0.b. $0.b.com=2. 5upac had his first breakthrough in music came in 1&&1 as a member of the group called .igital Fnderground. 5he same year he just recei4ed indi4idual recognition for the album -<9acalypse %ow=. 5his album was also the beginning of his notoriety as a leading figure of the gangsta of Hip Hop, with references of cop killing and se!ual 4iolence.

He was raised in a poor neighbor hood called Bedford8>tuy4esant as the son of a preschool teacher. fter dropping out of high school at the age of se4enteen he became a crack dealer on the street and became an 0+. few years later down the road the entire hip hop culture

became di4ided into east coast 4ersus west coast, which then became Bad Boy "ecords 4ersus .eath "ow "ecords. -Fnfortunately, it became 4ery real when on >eptember ', 1&&E, 5upac was shot multiple times in a dri4e8by shooting off the :as ?egas strip after he left a fight he was in4ol4ed in inside of the 0B0 Brand Hotel after a 0ike 5yson bo!ing match. He died si! days later on >eptember 1C, 1&&E as a result of those gun shot wounds at the age of <G ,-"ob "eece. $0.b. $0.b.com=2. On 0arch ; 1&&', %otorious B$B attended the >oul 5rain 0usic wards and went to the after party hosted by ?ibe maga@ine and Hwest "ecords on 0arch &. fter he left, Biggie was sitting in an >F? on the street when he was shot multiple times by an unknown person in an unmarked car. He died almost instantly. Hip8Hop faced its biggest tragedy when both 5upac >hakur and 5he %otorious B.$.B. were killed. Biggie was only <D years old. 5hose two ha4e had the most biggest impact on the hip hop culture world wide. 5hey started another style of hip hop which still e!ist today which known as gangsta rap. But its ama@ing how far hip hop has came and how it was originated . %o matter what hip hop will always be around and e4en though it may change again cause time period we)ll all know where it originated from. .
