*romotion and Tenure

R-QU.R-M-/T0 The $ualifications re$uired for tenure and for promotion at various ran"s are given in general University re$uirements and specific re$uirements of individual colleges and programs. Appendi( A contains the general University specifications for duties, responsibilities, and minimum re$uirements the ran"s of Assistant !rofessor, Associate !rofessor, and !rofessor. The dimensions of performance for tenure being granted at a specific ran" are the same as the dimensions of performance for promotion to that ran". .owever, the evaluation of these dimensions differs between the two types of personnel action. !romotion re$uires demonstrated performance in past endeavors worthy of the ran" being sought. Tenure re$uires the promise of continued performance. Thus tenure decisions are inherently more forward loo"ing. 4oreover, the ris" assumed by the University in a tenure decision is greater than the ris" assumed in a promotion decisions and, therefore, greater certainty of continued performance is re$uired for tenure than promotion. When a college, division, or department maintains a separate set of criteria, the candidate is re$uired to satisfy the general university re$uirements and any specific unit re$uirements applicable to that position.
