of Lesson: December 03, 2013 Standards/Benchmarks/GLEs Grade 3 Science: Ask questions about objects and events in the environment (e.g., plants, rocks, storms) (SI-E-A1) Grade 3 Social Studies: Show the location of a specified place by entering it on a labeled grid (e.g., the library is located at [grid point] E-3) (G-1A-E3) OBJECTIVES: TSW identify the different types of storms using QR codes and iPads. TSW identify the most common location of a specific storm using QR codes and iPads. TSW list facts about certain storms using QR codes and iPads. INTRODUCTION/ANTICIPATORY SET/SET INDUCTION/FOCUSING EVENT/MOTIVATION/ENGAGEMENT: TTW state the objective of the lesson, which is identifying the different types of storms. TTW present a short PowerPoint presentation on storms. PROCEDURES/CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT/EXPERIENCES/ACTIVITIES: Instructional Input/Procedures: 1. TTW ask the students what a storm is (Any disturbed state of the atmosphere that creates unpleasant weather like rain, lightning, thunder, hail, snow, sleet, and freezing rain.). 2. TTW ask what the most common storm types are (thunderstorm, hurricane, blizzard, sand storm, tornado, hailstorm, etc.). Guided Practice/Activity: 1. TTW display and read several examples of the different storm types. 2. TTW ask the students to tell their own stories about different storms that they have encountered (calling on students who raise their hands). Transition Statement:

TTW tell the students that they are going to use their iPads to learn more about thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: 1. TTW break the class up into groups of 4. 2. TTW pass out the worksheets and the iPads. 3. TSW use the iPads to determine where each storm occurs the most and two facts about each storm. 4. TSW will be responsible for participating in the group activity and writing down the location and facts. 5. TTW instruct the class to return to their desks when the class has finished. 6. TTW call on students to share what they found with their group. CLOSURE/QUESTIONING: TTW ask the students questions about storms and ask students what they thought was the most interesting fact about each storm (calling on students who raise their hand). ACCOMMODATIONS: Behavioral needs will be met by whole group activities and preferential seating. Additional storm related activities will be provided to early finishers. Repeated directions and individual assistance will be provided for academic needs.
