Theeurosignisthecurrencysignusedfortheeuro,the officialcurrencyoftheEurozoneintheEuropeanUnion (EU).Thedesignwaspresentedtothepublicbythe EuropeanCommissionon12December1996.The internationalthreelettercode(accordingtoISOstandardISO 4217)fortheeuroisEUR.InUnicodeitisencodedat U+20ACEUROSIGN(HTML:& # 8 3 6 4 ; & e u r o ; ).In English,thesignprecedesthevalue.Insomestyleguides,but notothers,theeurosignisunspaced.

Theeurocurrencysignwasdesignedtobesimilarinstructureto theoldsignfortheEuropeanCurrencyUnit,.Therewere originallythirtyproposalsthesewerereducedtotencandidates. Thesetenwereputtoapublicsurvey.Afterthesurveyhad narrowedtheoriginaltenproposalsdowntotwo,itwasuptothe EuropeanCommissiontochoosethefinaldesign.Theother designsthatwereconsideredarenotavailableforthepublicto view,norisanyinformationregardingthedesignersavailablefor publicquery.TheEuropeanCommissionconsiderstheprocessof designingtohavebeeninternalandkeepstheserecordssecret. Theeventualwinnerwasadesigncreatedbyateamoffour expertswhoseidentitieshavenotbeenrevealed.Itisassumedthat theBelgiangraphicdesignerAlainBillietwasthewinnerandthus thedesigneroftheeurosign.[2]

InspirationforthesymbolitselfcamefromtheGreekepsilon( )areferencetothe cradleofEuropeancivilizationandthefirstletterofthewordEurope,crossedbytwo parallellinestocertifythestabilityoftheeuro.

TheofficialstoryofthedesignhistoryoftheeurosignisdisputedbyArthurEisenmenger,aformerchief graphicdesignerfortheEuropeanEconomicCommunity,whoclaimshehadtheideapriortothe EuropeanCommission.[4] TheEuropeanCommissionspecifiedaeurologowithexactproportionsand colours(PMSYellowforeground,PMSReflexBluebackground[3]),forusein publicrelationsmaterialrelatedtotheeurointroduction.WhiletheCommission intendedthelogotobeaprescribedglyphshape,typographersmadeitclearthat theyintendedtodesigntheirownvariantsinstead.[5] TheguitarbrandEpiphonehasalogothatisverysimilartotheeurosign.

Theeurodesign featuredinthe popularfontComic Sansoriginallyhad acartooneyeinside aserif.Thiswas laterremoved because'TheEU wasgoingtosueus overthat.' [1]

Useoncomputers
Generatingtheeurosignusingacomputerdependsontheoperatingsystemand nationalconventions.Somemobilephonecompaniesissuedaninterimsoftware updatefortheirspecialSMScharacterset,replacingthelessfrequentJapanese yensignwiththeeurosign.Latermobilephoneshavebothcurrencysigns.

TheeuroisrepresentedintheUnicodecharactersetwiththecharactername EUROSIGNandthecodepositionU+20AC(decimal8364)aswellasin updatedversionsofthetraditionalLatincharactersetencodings.[6][7]InHTML, the& e u r o ; entitycanalsobeused.TheHTMLentitywasonlyintroducedwith HTML4.0,shortlyaftertheintroductionoftheeuro,andmanybrowserswereunabletorenderit.The alternativewastouse& # 1 2 8 ; instead,with128(80hexadecimal)beingthecodepositionoftheeurosign inmostWindows125xencodings. Animplicitcharacterencoding,alongwiththefactthatthecode positionoftheeurosignisdifferentincommonencoding schemes,ledtomanyproblemsdisplayingtheeurosignin computerapplications.Whiledisplayingtheeurosignisno problemaslongasonlyonesystemisused(providedanupto datefontwiththeproperglyphisavailable),mixedsetupsoften producederrors.Oneexampleisacontentmanagementsystem wherearticlesarestoredinadatabaseusingadifferentcharacter setthantheeditor'scomputer.Anotherislegacysoftwarewhich couldonlyhandleolderencodingssuchasISO88591that Theeurosigninaselectionoffonts. containednoeurosignatall.Insuchsituations,characterset conversionshadtobemade,oftenintroducingconversionerrors suchasaquestionmark(?)beingdisplayedinsteadofaeurosign.
