Dear Eastminster Family, Eastminsters worship spaces need some TLC and I write to ask each of you for your help to make these updates possible. What life events have you marked in our sanctuary? A baptism, a wedding or even a funeral? Perhaps you remember your grandchildren coming forward for childrens time, a child becoming an Eagle Scout, or the simple sacredness of gathering to worship our Lord during both the high times and the hard times of life. Still others of you look more forward than backwards, anticipating milestones to come in the future. Whatever the case, after fifty-seven years, our sanctuary needs some work; and while we are at it, were going to address a few needs elsewhere on the campus as well. Youve seen the list. Now I ask each of you to help. At times like this, I realize it can be tempting, often subconsciously, to find ways to justify giving less than we are able. Instead, I ask you to see this as an opportunity to invest in Gods work in the world. By banding together and each giving as God has blessed us financially, the need will be met. We are moving forward as a church family, leaning into the future to which God is calling us. But everyones partnership is needed. See you Sunday,

Reverend Billy Graham tells of a time early in his ministry when he arrived in a small town to preach a sermon. Wanting to mail a letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was. When the boy had told him, Dr. Graham thanked him and said, If youll come to the Baptist Church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven. The boy replied, I dont think Ill be there . . .You dont even know your way to the post office.

Mothers Day Offering

On Sunday, May 12, churches across South Carolina will participate in the Mothers Day Offering for Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina. This special offering supports seniors who outlive their resources and depend on the generosity of others for their care. Thanks to the support of Presbyterian congregations and generous individuals, over $1.1 million in charitable care was provided last year by PCSC. Please consider participating in the special offering and making a difference in the lives of older adults who are counting on us! Please use your separate pledge envelopes marked Presbyterian Communities or write this offering name on the memo line of your check.

Nineteen musicians and 17 friends depart June 7 on a 12-day tour of Scotland. Singing engagements at St. Salvators Chapel on the campus of St. Andrews University and St. Orans Chapel at Iona Abbey are scheduled June 11 and June 15. Learning the history of Presbyterianism and visiting sites with historical significance are of primary importance. Other highChoir Rehearsal for Scotland Trip lights include the cities of Edinburgh, Inverness, Perth, Oban, and Glasgow; the Isles of Mull and Iona; and the Highlands including Lochs Lomond and Ness. To prepare for the trip, the group has been studying the history of Scotland including the many people and faiths that have lived there. From the Iron Age tribes to invading Vikings, from occupation by England across many centuries to the many freedom battles leading to periods of independence, the Scots and their beautiful country have provided an interesting study. While there, the choir will learn more about the coming of Christianity to the British Isles, the faith practices of pre-Christian peoples there, and how some pre-Christian faith symbols were absorbed into the Christian faith practices we still have today. Eastminster musicians who are traveling include: Ann Benson, Mary Keenan, Crissa Keith, Mary Kay Nolan, Harriett Edmonds, Melissa Bailey, Cyntha Dobson, Jane Brissette, Susan Coggins, Susan Faulk, Betsy Kinsella, Virginia Peninger, Ann St. John, Walter Scull, Ed West, John Arnold, Jim St. John, Josh Evanovich, and Fredna Lee. Friends and family of the choir include: Peter Brissette, Bill Coggins, Sue Jones, and Elizabeth Benson.

The UPDATE will become monthly for the summer after the May 28 issue. An issue will be published on June 23, July 21, and August 18 returning to weekly status. Deadline dates are as always, ten days before the publication date. We will remain in touch weekly over the summer with E-news. If we do not have your current e-mail address, please send it to the church to be included in our data base. The church buildings and CLC will close at noon on Friday, May 17, so the Personnel Committee can recognize the staff with a luncheon in Thompson Hall and a well-deserved afternoon off! Please keep this in mind as you plan your meetings or errands to the church. Thank you for your cooperation. (Eastminster Day School will remain open. Parents may pick up their children using the CE building entrances.) Eastminster will take dinner to the Transitions Center on May 16. Can you make pasta salad with SHELL pasta, or bring bags of strawberries? Contact Laura Long, 787-7008, if you can help with the food or want to be part of the team serving that night.
