STANDARDS: Content Area: Standard 4: Living Environment Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

Key Idea 1: Living things are both similar to and different from each other and from nonliving things.

Key Idea 1.2: Describe and explain the structures and functions of the human body at different organizational levels (e.g., systems, tissues, cells, organelles).

Technology:

Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues d. Identify trends and forecast possibilities

Standard 2: Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats c. Develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures d. Contribute to project teams Standard 6: Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. a. Understand and use technology systems b. Select and use applications effectively and productively c. Troubleshoot systems and applications d. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies

Lesson Objectives: 1. Students will be able to define the functions of the organs (Knowledge) 2. Students will be able to describe the functions of cell structures and organelles (Comprehension) 3. Students will be able to label the parts of the plant and animal cell (Comprehension) 4. Students will be able to apply knowledge towards the cells interactive games(Application)

Introduce the Learning Activity: The teacher will start off by explaining to the students what they will be learning that day. Todays class will consist of learning cell structures in a fun and exciting way. First, we will do a review from what you learned last year in 6th grade science class. The teacher will ask for volunteers to come to the front of the class. They will be asked to choose an organ from the poster and explain what they think the function of the organ is. Then, they will take the organ off of the poster and read to the class what the actual function is. This will continue until all of the organs have been explained. (Evidence: Objective 1) The teacher will end this activity by talking about how this has to do with the next topic. Organs and organelles have the same concept. Organs are a structure in the body that work together so that the body can function properly. Organelles are structures in the cell that work together so that the cell can function properly. The teacher will engage the students on the next topic by playing a song for the students about cells and organelles. The teacher will hand out a sheet with the lyrics to the song so that the students can

read along. The teacher will tell the students that the link to the song can be found on Kristina Jacksons website under her resources page. Provide Information: The teacher will have the students pull up Kristina Jacksons website and click on her resources page. The teacher will instruct the students to click on the link titled Plant and Animal Cell Tutorial, Game, and Quiz. While the students are getting the websites ready, the teacher will hand out a worksheet that the students will fill out while navigating through the website. The teacher will have students come to the front of the class and navigate the tutorial part of the website for the animal cell. The teacher will tell the students to make sure that they are paying attention to what the cell structures look like as well. After all parts of the animal cell have been discussed, the students will be instructed to go to the tutorial for the plant cell. The teacher will have the students navigate the plant cell tutorial individually. The teacher will give the students about 2-3 minutes to do so because many of the cell structures are the same. (Evidence: Objective 2) Provide Practice: The teacher will have the students click on the game portion of the website for both the animal and plant cell. (Evidence: Objective 3 and 4)The teacher will walk around the room to see how the students are performing on the games. The teacher will then move on to the next activity, which is Cell Jeopardy. The teacher will put the students into two separate groups. The group with the most points at the end of the game will receive extra credit on their next exam. (Evidence: Objective 2 and 3) The teacher will tell the students that the jeopardy game can be found on Kristina Jacksons website and can be used as a review for the exam. Provide knowledge of results: The teacher will provide verbal feedback when he or she walks around the classroom during the activities. If the teacher sees a student who is having difficulty playing the games the teacher should address the problem immediately. The teacher will provide written feedback when the teacher collects the worksheets the students took notes on. Review the Activity: The teacher will check for understanding throughout the lesson. The teacher will walk around the classroom to help clarify any confusion with the activities. The teacher will talk to students individually to make sure that no one is falling behind in the lesson.

Method of Assessment: The teacher will collect the worksheet that was handed out in the beginning of the class. The worksheet will be given a participation grade. The notes will show the teacher if the students went through and read the tutorials as well as if they understood the functions. (Evidence: 2 & 3)
