FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Families, Recently, I received information about the difference between conflicts and bullying from FCPS Student Services Office. How do you know if a behavior is bullying or not bullying (a conflict)? In the past weeks, I have seen an increase in the number of Bullying Reporting Forms that have been submitted to the front office. The investigations have shown these were one time incidents and/ or inappropriate behaviors. They did not meet the definition of bullying. I wanted to share this information with the MVMPCS community, so you are aware of what constitutes bullying. Definition of bullying: Bullying, harassment, or intimidation means
intentional conduct, including verbal, physical, or written conduct, or an intentional electronic communication, that: (I) creates a hostile educational environment by substantially interfering with a students educational benefits, opportunities, or performance, or with a students physical or psychological well -being and is: 1. motivated by an actual or a perceived personal characteristic including race, national origin, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ancestry, physical attribute, socioeconomic status, familial status, or physical or mental ability or disability; or 2. threatening or seriously intimidating; and (II) 1. occurs on school property, at a school activity or event, or on a school bus; or 2. substantially disrupts the orderly operation of a school. Electronic communication means a communication transmitted by means of an electronic device, including a telephone, cellular phone, computer, or pager.

The C-Rhyme has been committed and two detectives have to find the perpetrator amidst the pranks and hilarity that ensues Once Upon a Time in Nursery Rhyme Land.

When do you know if a behavior is a conflict between students or when is it bullying? Please use the information below to determine if it is a conflict or bullying. Conflict Equal power Happens once or occasionally Not always intended to cause harm Not power or attention seeking Shows remorse Accepts responsibility Problem solves/work things out Equal emotional, possible physical reaction Bullying Imbalance of power Repeated behavior Purposeful and intended to inflict physical or emotional pain Seeking power, control or physical things Rarely shows remorse Blames the target No attempt to problem solve Serious threat of physical or emotional harm toward victim Please note that all reporting of bullying are taken seriously by the Principal, Assistant Principal and staff. After the investigation is completed, it is our practice at MVMPCS that all students meet separately with the guidance counselor, Ms. Green, in order to discuss strategies that are helpful for the alleged offender and the victim. Also, upon request by the classroom teacher, Ms. Green will do class lessons on topics such as: friendships, bullying, sharing and conflict resolution. Cita
