2 Course Reflection Essay In completing the assignments and final Collaborative/PSA Project in English 2010, I learned many things about writing in multiple genres and appropriately adapting strategies of argumentation for a given writing situation. I learned much from completing the PSA Project. I learned how to work with other people in a group project, how to effectively use PowerPoint, make changes, corrections and add pictures, I learned how to download DropBox and add my pages to the group project, and make changes and corrections to it, and how to save it. I learned that the objective comments people make about my writing are legitimate and are for my best. They helped me to become a better writer. In writing about Scuba Diving Certifications, my profile, I did much research and learned about the many different requirements for the levels of scuba diving certifications. I learned that I have earned many of these, but still have many to complete. With much more time and effort, I will continue to earn these. I also learned how to adapt style and design for a given writing situation. I enjoy scuba diving and am very grateful to be able to continue with this sport. I learned how to approach reading and research critically and rhetorically, choosing appropriate research strategies for a particular writing task. I wrote a paper on Protecting Dolphins. I enjoyed performing research and writing about different situations that are causing these marine animals to become endangered and even extinct and what can be done to prevent this from happening. I learned how to use the APA style of writing and how I needed to change my writing to effectively write in this style, cite information in the body of my writing and how to cite information in the reference section from various sources. I realized it is sometimes hard to

3 change my habits and ways of doing things when I have done them one way for a long time. This style of writing will help me in my future as I progress towards my goal of becoming a marine biologist. This class also helped me develop vital workplace skills in writing and taught me strategies and skills that can be used for life-long learning. It taught me to use information in meaningful ways in order to enrich my life and think things through effectively. This class also helped me further my basic English skills, as well as broaden my knowledge of a wide range of thinking. I conceived, drafted and revised my many documents and managed these processes independently. With the comments from my peer reviews and instructor, I was able to look at my papers and see different ways of presenting my topics. It was this way with my paper on the Hammerhead Sharks and what are causing them to become endangered or near extinct. The comments my instructor gave for taking out redundant items and explaining why they are on the Hammerhead Sharks are on the endangered list helped me critically think how to change the writing. They helped me to know how to better organize my topics and papers and how to make wise changes. They had good ideas about how to explain my topic in a way they could understand the points I was trying to present. They helped me to realize that some of my comments and points really did not relate to the thesis of my paper. They helped me to know when to expand a topic and further explain my ideas. I also was able to give my comments to my peers on their papers. I was able to help them see different ways of presenting their topics and several ideas for them to include in their

4 writings. Seeing the various styles of writing helped me grow and learn more how to improve my style of writing. I learned how to cite sources appropriately for the writing situation, including using an academic system of citation with a high degree of proficiency (the APA style of writing). I understand and respond critically to a civic conversation and become a legitimate participant in that conversation. I worked collaboratively on writing tasks with other writers. I edited their writing so that it contains a minimum of surface error. I enjoyed being able to choose topics that I am interested in learning more about. It was sometimes harder to come up with a subject when you are choosing it yourself. I think you take ownership of the subject and do your best to make sure it is a job you are proud of completing, and you do extra research to make sure it is. It took a lot of time to put together my final portfolio. It took time to decide which writings to include. There were many revisions, corrections and changes that were made to my writings. In putting together my final portfolio it gave me a chance to review my writings and reflect on how I came up with my topics, completed the research, organized my papers and finished them. . I think the greatest strength of my writings and portfolio is my ability to explain the topic and make you feel as if you were there with the subject. I try to write so that you understand my points. I also try to write in enough detail so it keeps people interested and they want to hear more and learn more about the subject.

5 I have enjoyed meeting and being with several people in the class, especially on the PSA Project. They have great goals they want to accomplish. Communicating by writing will help them and me in the future to obtain our goals. I will take the things I have learned and include the various techniques and writing styles in the many papers I will write for my classes in the future.
